Is this weird, normal or somewhere in between?

Jun 3, 2021, 12:01 PM

Every morning when I wake up, there's a song in my head, and I almost never know how it got there.

Example: This morning it was King of Pain by the Police. Yesterday it was Cable Car by The Fray. Day before, it was In Memory of Elizabeth Reid by the Allman Bros. I don't think I've heard any of those in well over a year. Heck, I've woken before with Hey Mr. Knickerbocker from Barney and Friends I used to watch with my daughter when she was little.

Anybody else cursed / blessed this way?

And Cable Car is still a banger 15 years later.

Except I hear the sweet music I grew up to made by my abuelo's mariachi band. It's such a soothing set of sounds from my past and it makes me really miss my grandfather.

It does however stir up the very painful memory of him being on his burro, the burro being spooked by celebratory gunfire after Puebla were named campeones del futbol mexico after the 82-83 season, and the burro landing on top of my grandfather. I still remember being 9 or 10 years old feeling helpless that I could not lift the burro while his buddies were so shathammered on tequila y intoxicated with the Puebla victory that they left him there overnight and the next day he had to have his leg amputated and his burro put down. Somehow during all of that his favorite sombrero got gone and he settled into a life of crime, depression, and alcoholism but still made some of the best paella you've ever had cooked by a 1 legged man.

So you're saying you wake up every morning to La Cucaracha?

P.S. Sorry about your grandpa's mule.

Me too. But I am mostly haunted by one song

Jun 3, 2021, 12:45 PM

Been afflicted with this for years, but thankfully it is a song THAT I LIKE, which saves me from complete mental collapse.

I also many time have some song flowing freely through my brain, but usually one I heard earlier that day. I tend to whistle or hum it quietly to myself, never singing out loud. No different than most folks.

But the one song I mentioned that I carry with me everywhere is "My Name is Mud" by Primus, and if you are randomly walking around in a Publix and hear some guy drumming that song on a cereal box or a can of Pringles, it's me. I just love drumming that little rhythmic beat, never tire of it. So, Thank you Les Claypool. Also, DamnU Les Claypool.
