thats what happens when you guarantee loans

Jul 8, 2020, 5:27 PM

and millions are too stupid to understand the ramifications of the loans and the recipients of the money have no skin in the game; many making 100's of thousands of dollars a year and not teaching one class.

The liberals are doing the same thing that they did when they decided that everyone deserved a home loan.

Unfortunately, we will be the "stupid" ones when all of these loans are "forgiven" at the expense of the responsible people....

yeah. i have heard that one. The rise in tuition is caused almost entirely by state and federal education funding being cut. This is a by product of cutting taxes and looking for budget cuts to prevent shortfalls. Higher education has always been on the chopping block, along with entitlements.

Decrease in state funding, or even holding state funding flat with increasing enrollment, is certainly a factor in higher education prices, but it's only one of the factors. It also fails to account for why tuition at private universities has also increased faster than inflation.

Here's a pretty good article from 2019 going through the various causes for college costs increasing. TLDR: higher enrollment, decreased state funding, more student amenities, more loans all have contributed to the higher costs we have today.

As a guy with one year left of writing out of state tuition checks, this one hit home. And coincidentally, the graph starts about the time I started at CU. Thx for posting. (I think ? haha)

The chart would look the same on almost everything vs inflation

Jul 8, 2020, 6:10 PM

Except TV and computer prices, oddly enough

They have to keep those low because the minute you walk out the store with one, it’s already outdated ??

The minute I walked out of the Bursar's Office in Sikes Hall, in the fall 1973, having written a check for less than $1,100 for room, board and tuition as an "out of state student", and realizing that was exactly twice what an in state student paid, I realized, given its academic reputation in Architecture, that I had come to the right place. I'm sorta'-kinda' retired at the moment, but I owe everything I am today to Clemson University! Inflation be ######!!!

Go Tigers!!!

No, it wouldn't.

"Inflation" index is the increase in prices in general, or based on a certain group of "products." The graph is showing how education inflation is far outpacing the average.

This is pretty sad and really illustrates a culture of entitlement within the academic framework.
I served on an alumni board of sort for about six years and while there was great concern over the loss of state funding, there was not once a discussion on how to manage and control costs or decisions made to allocate funds differently.

I have been involved in manufacturing for 30+ years. Costs to process on our equipment is roughly 29% higher today vs. 20 years ago. We have to continuously improve or we are left behind and can't compete. Colleges have not faced competition and the ease of government free education that already exists through loans, grants, etc.. is like a drug to colleges. They are hooked and see no need to compete.

Too painful to think about.

Seedman

Exactly.

And this is the No. 1 reason the gubment should be smaller. It does not have to provide a quality service/product and does not have to make a profit or even break even for everyone to keep their job.

Academia, particularly college academia, is a favored

Jul 9, 2020, 8:09 AM

constituency of the left oriented politicians. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and the rest of their ilk have made careers out of attacking "greedy" corporate CEO's and whole industries for making (in their judgement) too much money. Just think how often they excoriate the pharmaceutical industry and the high prices of drugs.

Yet, these same politicos will never criticize how the costs of attending College (tuition, room , board etc...) have skyrocketed to absurd levels. Instead they attack the student loan side of the equation as the "big evil" and ignore how the College industry has been price gouging for the last 20+ years; getting rich off students who sign up for these loans in order to pay their exorbitant fees.

To make matters even more absurd, these same politicians want to make college "free" for everyone by having the taxpayers pay 100% of these high costs with no discussion of how out of whack the costs for attending College have become. However much the Colleges want to charge - just have the taxpayer pay it. Isn't it interesting how these very politicians always want to impose "price controls" on private industry but won't discuss price controls for Colleges...

Well... don't expect these costs to go down anytime soon as the academia industry is so overwhelmingly left in their ideological orientation that they will continue to get a "pass" by their friends in Government and the media. There won't be any crusades in the halls of Congress or stories in the NY Times demanding Colleges and Universities stop gouging students and find ways to lower their costs.

Why is nobody challenging these schools directly?

Jul 9, 2020, 8:19 AM

Lots of complaints about politicians. Wouldn’t we have more influence going directly to Clemson with recommendations?

The quality of buildings, supplies, housing and food is far nicer now than when we were in school. Kids (and their parents) don’t support living in Johnstone quality lodging anymore. Kids drive far nicer cars and eat out. So much more money being spent not just on education.

The ease of loan money makes it easy for schools to raise their rates. But schools themselves need to be held accountable too.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely this should start with the Colleges themselves

Jul 9, 2020, 12:15 PM

and the state supported institutions should be getting hammered by the state legislatures as well.

At some point during the last 25 years Colleges decided they needed to become "resorts" in their amenities, housing, and dining options in addition to centers of higher learning. I'm all for progress but when kids are putting themselves into decades of debt to pay for all this unnecessary junk something needs to be done with the whole model of the modern College experience.
