I think he should get it back, but USC (real one) doesn’t deserve their wins/title back

Jul 2, 2021, 7:34 PM

Nah they broke the rules at the time that presumably at least a few other people were following. I don’t get why the new NIL rules should have anything to do with the Bush situation. His family was not given use of the house in return for Reggie’s endorsement of a product or service. He was given that extra benefit as either an inducement to attend USC, or an enticement to sign with an agent in the future. As far as I know those two things are still against the rules.

My understanding is the rule that he broke would still be a broken rule today. So no, he should not get the Heisman trophy back.

Na. Past is past. He’ll forever be known for giving it back. Rules aren’t retroactive.

Should Shoeless Joe be admitted to the MLB Hall of Fame...? I'll just leave that there.

Nah, he broke the rules that were in place at that time.

I remeber watching the USC oline hold Fresno St all game allowing Bush to cut back and run up yards on route to a 50 - 42 win. I felt like Fresno St wins that game if called fairly.

Yes.

IMO despite what we want to think or how the rules were, the player still has to go out and perform.

I wish financial compensation = automatic performance enhancer but it doesn't. Reggie Bush won the Heisman based on game performances not an agent paying him.

Same with PEDs to an extent. PEDs can help players perform at a higher level but that doesn't mean it takes an average Joe to Hall of Fame status by default. Like basically life in a nut shell, it takes hard work and a little luck to reach the highs of success.

That's not to say rules aren't rules for a reason. If they choose to uphold it so be it but IMO performance on the field got him the trophy, not financial compensation and the school was penalized for it so it's not like there weren't any reprimands for his actions.

I agree PEDs do not make normal great. If you have talent, train like hell, and take PEDs, you have advantage. Keep in mind most are only looking for one second.
The Tour is going on now and like in most sports, PEDs have played a part. If you think you can take them and become Greg Lemond - good luck. No matter, he cheated and that aint right.

Did he earn the trophy- I believe he did, but at the time, made monetary gain and it was not allowed. So NO!

Reggie Bush, he made millions in the NFL.

Not that there is anything to be done about it now, but if you want to champion an athlete's cause, I think that Bo Jackson being robbed of most of his last baseball season at Auburn due to devious Tampa Bay NFL owners duping him into a plane ride by telling him it had been cleared with the NCAA, when they KNEW it would cost him his baseball eligibility, is one of the great unpunished crimes in sports history.

If the NCAA really had any balls, they would have had those owners prosecuted for fraud, and reinstated Jackson's eligibility at the time.

Bo got some small measure of revenge by making them waste their Number 1 draft pick. He told them ahead of time that he would never play for them, but they figured they would be able to strong arm him into signing. We all know the rest of the history.

Bo's career is THE greatest "What if" in the history of sports, both from the standpoint of the tawdry actions of Tampa Bay ownership, as well as the freak injury that ended his NFL career and eventually, his baseball career as well. I truly believe he would be in both the MLB and NFL Halls of Fame had not the freak hip injury occurred.

According to one of the NCAA guys, this is a totally different situation than players getting paid for NIL.

Re: Reggie Bush: Should get his Heisman back or nah?..

Jul 4, 2021, 11:33 AM

No because like some have stated this is different than NIL first of all. But if somehow somebody could link the two as being similar it was still the rules back then. If you got a speeding ticket going 10 over on a road and then a few years later they increased the speed limit to 10 more they aren’t gonna go back and repay everybody that got a ticket on that road.

Re: Reggie Bush: Should he get his Heisman back or nah?..

Jul 4, 2021, 3:26 PM

I say no because at the the time the rules were enforce the Reggie Bush violated. If you make an exception for him the you have to review every other case where the NCAA for rule violations.

When is this country going to stop taking steps back and focus on the future.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. He didn’t admit to doing anything wrong.

Jul 4, 2021, 4:06 PM

Those kids he claims he was upset about losing out on scholarships (or bowl trips) are the ones that should be pissed now. It’s the same for Penn State and a lot of other schools. The future students shouldn’t be punished. Clean house on the coaching staff and/or AD, but stop punishing kids who grew up wanting to go to a school their whole lives. Reggie can continue to live with that and have this be a reminder as far as I’m concerned.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

should have never lost it anyway

Jul 4, 2021, 4:12 PM

i can see if he were doping using performance enhancing drugs..but what he did did not give him an unfair advantage on the field..he was the best player bar none that season .
