This is a really OLD bone to be picking but..

in 1948 two teams went undefeated, Michigan and Clemson. Michigan did not go to a bowl due to conference rules at the time while Clemson went on to defeat Missouri(8-2) in the Gator Bowl. So Clemson played one more game that season than Michigan but came in second in the AP voting, primarily due to sportswriters of the time being largely based in the North and Northeast and biased against Southern schools.
So it SHOULD have been Clemson's third NC this year. Just sayin'.
Guess I'm giving a shout-out to the Undefeated Tigers of 1948!!!

Agreed!! However the national champion was crowned before bowl games back then. Better system now. It was kind of like giving out the heisman before the entire season is over.

A champion crowned before the bowl games is maybe the dumbest idea I've ever heard

I don't think those ranking are the final rankings.

as a National Championship.
As a side note, I believe Clemson did finish first in one poll in 1948.

I never could understand this one either. Argonaut1992 is correct that Michigan beat more ranked teams but how do you have a North Carolina team end up ranked 3 with 2 losses? Makes no sense... Same conference? Wow.
Clemson is the only team to finish 11-0. Only two teams finished undefeated, Michigan #1 and Clemson #11. And that IS the only reason Michigan has 3 titles and Clemson 2. Definitely should be reversed.
You are correct - things haven't changed much but thank goodness we have a true system now. No telling how many Clemson would have had with this current system.

both of ours are beyond question. For example, I think Bama and some others have cheapened their overall nattys by claiming some bogus ones.

Bama has eight or ten NCs due to stuff like that.

Clemson has more class than claim a NC unless it's declared by everyone.

when the media throws around that number of 16 for Alabama's National Championships. It's disrespectful to the teams that actually won the National Championship on the 7 or 8 that they claim with no true right.

In 15 more years, we will have more Natty's than Bama.
Suck it Bama.
