Does it count toward standings (I'm aware that it would have no effect)

Why are they playing an extra game?

It counts towards the overall record but is treated as a non-conference game.

Was apparently a side deal between the coaches. went something like this; FSU-"hey we're coming into town. Can we practice at your facility?" UNC-"heck with that let's play"

Just an extra game that the two school agreed to play since FSU was going to be in the area for the tourney anyway. Call it an extra practice session if you like. Perfectly legal. The game doesn't count for anything. Baseball is flexible like that. I don't know of another sport that is.
