Topic below about sunglasses on woot got me thinking

And I know i'm UDP on this, but for the life of me, I can not understand how someone can justify spending $200+ on a pair of non-prescription sunglasses. I have a pair in my truck that I got at Wal-Mart about 2 years ago for about $20, and honestly, they work fine.
What does a $200 pair of sunglasses do for you that mine isn't? Honest question, and hey, if you've got the disposable income to wear something like that, good on you. I just can't understand the appeal.
Is it the look? The functionality? The Yeti effect?

I have enough trouble keeping up with 1 pair of glasses, never mind 2.
I gave up on worrying how I looked a long time ago

and they are fine. I'd be willing to spend a bit more - maybe Shady Ray's next time - but not $100 I don't think.

$20 eyes? get $20 sunglasses.

I'm out in the sun a lot.
When I was in my mid 20's I had pinguecula form on both eye balls. They weren't painful, but my eye dr told me all kinda mean nasties could start happening if I didn't start protecting my eyes.
The pinguecula eventually went away after I started wearing quality sunglasses.
FTR, and no humblebrag, I probably have 4-5 pair of Costas (glass lenses only) and a pair of Maui jims that I cycle through. I could lose my hearing, and probably a limb or two, but sight loss would probably take me out of doing anything enjoyable and independent living.

eye protection when outdoors a lot.
Also looks, they way the feel, general durability, and the warranty.
Kinda like asking why own a nice new car when you can get a cheap old one.

This. Shop around, get good polarized lenses that feel good

and look good, spend a little over $100 on them, wear them for 5-6 years or more, pays for themselves in $20 sunglasses on your truck dashboard.
I try to find the best sunglasses I can on sale, more bang for your buck. I do not have the glass lenses from Costa though, too rich for my blood, but I understand they are superior products.
$25 Goodr sunglasses are OK, but the polarization is just a laminate on a cheap lense and it wears off.

though maybe if I spent $200 on a pair of sunglasses I wouldn't lose them because they cost $200? Paradox.

and they always either break them or lose them pretty much yearly. So it may be genetic in my case, lol.
It does make for a pretty easy Christmas gift idea for the both of them (although, thinking about it now, I'm wondering if that's not their intention...).

which is why I go to Costco for them. When my rx changes, I can get two pairs (one regular and one sunglasses) for less than one pair at Lenscrafters. Not as big a frame selection at Costco is the biggest negative.

wore cheap sunglasses for years and lost them constantly. Bought a nice pair and I have not lost any of them. I get new ones when mine wear out, go out of style or I get bored.
The pair I mentioned in the thread are because my wife wants me to get them.

cataracts later in life among other things
Jan 28, 2022, 3:16 PM
|

I grew up outside from daylight-to-dark, working on a farm or golf course. Always in the sun. Started developing eye sensitivity and weakness.
Eye Dr said if I don't start properly protecting my eyes I'd have cataracts by the time I was 40, and probably develop even more serious eyesight issues. Cheap sunglasses are full of optical defects and many fail to protect your eyes, sometimes are even worse than nothing (dark but optically poor lenses can falsely open up your pupils and cause even more damage from the sun). The sunglasses industry is not very well regulated - makers can easily false-advertise.
So I started wearing top quality sunglasses and it's probably the best preventative medical things I've ever done. I could cite 100 different articles and sources on this topic but I'll let you do that on your own.
My eyes are still good, mid-50's and still have great vision. No prescription glasses needed (yet).
What is more important than your eyesight? Good pair of shades is a relatively small price to pay for long term good eyesight.

and in my 20's, with a decent job, and no kids, and wanted to sling the P, a little bling may be worth it. But at my age, married, with kids, and a very good job, I just have 31,763 more useful things to spend $200 on I guess, and sunglasses is #31,764 I guess. So I won't shame someone else for spending that much on sunglasses, as I can see a time when I would, and did. But if they're 45yo, married, with kids, and a career, I will cast asparagus at them.

Kinda like wearing sunscreen or a hat in the sun.
I'm not sure what age or marital and kid status have to do with it.

Better lenses, better construction, better feel, more durable, will last longer. I just got a new pair of Kaenon’s to replace the pair I bought in 2015. When you do a lot on the water and outside, good sunglasses are worth the investment. I tried on shady rays and some of the other budget specs, they all just felt cheap and lenses were lacking.
