NIL potential Turn-Off 2 Many Fans!!!!

Jan 4, 2022, 6:53 PM

Being a football head - I might watch longer than most.

Does anybody else think this thing could get silly to the point where many fans are turned off by it all?

I personally can. Why? Because, some people apparently can't stand professional sports solely based off the fact of what they call "gross amount of money they make"!

My personal take in my response to them on a side-note is: "ever heard of fair market value? If the going rate for a job is in the millions or tens of millions or hundreds of millions are they to turn it down? Would an underwater welder turn down the going rate for that job? Would an attorney solely work pro-bono? Or any other job"?

That's not the point of the post though. I wonder if these same type of people will "take their money and stop supporting by their viewership"!
Somebody is reading this going, "you must be crazy"! But, whoever would have thought NASCAR would be struggling to find sponsors? Some of their things was some controversial decisions people didn't like, but it had started losing viewership well before that.

All of the current players would have come and gone by the time any impact is "potentially felt" but wondering if anybody else see it as a potential "pitfall" of the NIL and Portal?

NCAA basketball regular-season games - and to me even the tournament isn't the same since so many of the best players are choosing not to stay more than a year in school. Some are choosing to go overseas for a year and bypass it altogether. I don't watch it as I use to as a result. Don't get me wrong; I am still a fan but it's nothing like how I use to keep up with it.
Portal in football I could see having the same effect! Especially if kids are allowed to just pick up and leave multiple times and/or during the season!

I don’t begrudge players being able to make money off of their Name, Image and Likeness. My concern is what we’re seeing in schools like Texas and Texas A&M. You’re gonna see some of the larger, wealthier schools funneling massive amounts of money into the football players which overtime is going to dramatically rip the recruiting scales to a select dozen or so schools well with the wealthiest fan bases. Clemson Will not be able to compete financially in the NIL marketplace.

We all love Clemson because of the beautiful campus, the unbelievably friendly people, the quaint, charming town, etc. In recent years, Clemson has been able to recruit top talent partially because of Dabo‘s recruiting skills, but also because recruits saw the same things in Clemson that we all love.

In the future that is likely to change. More and more you’ll see athletes going to the schools where they can make the most money. That to me is very sad. If things get to that point, which maybe they won’t, but if they do, I may gradually start to lose interest in the sport.

I see your point and I do believe if it gets stupid I’m sure it will turn off a faction of the base. Basketball has definitely been a turn off for me as well with the one and dones. Great for the players but not so much for the fans imo.

No, imo the NFL should start farm leagues and...

allow post high school players to learn their crafts on a professional level rather that contaminate the college programs.

I think the older generation who grew up with CFB being pretty much an amateur student athlete game completely separated from the pro game will be turned off by NFL lite CFB. They will be the first to abandon the game.

The younger generation may not be turned off by the college players getting paid. If it becomes the norm, they will accept and adapt. But, they don't have the money to spend on following the sport. So, the fans who support it with money may be the ones to make it irrelevant.

In 5 years we will know the answer as to where we are headed. At some point, We will probably see a small group of teams 12-16 who can survive. They will function much like the NFL. I think the rest may quit fielding teams. I don't see Clemson or USUCK surviving.

The young ones aren’t really watching it to begin with

Certainly not to the level myself and most of my friends and college buddies did. It was can’t miss TV. My son and most his friends are casual observers. They all play sports - baseball, football, soccer, XC, golf - they are all over the board so it’s not from a lack of interest in sports but when it comes to watching college football, they are casual observers and don’t even sit through a full game. More interested in video games. They are more interested in NFL due to fantasy football but they can just refresh the app to check the updates on that

If this continues to escalate, and it probably will, I think more folks will align themselves with FCS - these kids play because they love the game and actually do their classwork, also easy to park & get in and out of games.

Doubt it, NFL ratings crush CFB.

If enough fans leave, the money leaves as well

And the golden goose will be dead….. for players, overpaid coaches, and universities.

I feel like we are heading in that direction unless the NIL gets reined in.

Unfortunately it is definitely coming if there is not some sort of intervention to lay down strict ground rules for the NIL and the portal. CFB is free agency everyday. It is going to be insane and awful.

I think the presidents are going to step in at some point I hope to develop something. Contracts maybe?

You cannot have a college game with 20 teams that are not on a level playing field dominating. I am a die hard CFB and Clemson fan. Loved the pageantry of the game (this is also fading). If I am willing to tune out because I feel that my team no longer has a somewhat level playing field I guarantee you there are many many more.

On its current path CFB viewership will decline drastically in 5 years. I thought it would be more like 10, but this is happening quicker than I thought. Some of us will just give CFB the finger and vote with our dollars and time.

What dumbfounds me is the powers that be do not see it coming?

It's gonna ruin College Football. The days of 95% of these kids going to a school because of the atmosphere, campus, coaches, team, etcetera are over. It's all just money chasing now. If they want to save College Football they have to do something about the NIL and Transfer Portal. It's all just essentially free agency now.
