Nick Saban to Colin Cowherd

Jul 31, 2018, 2:42 PM

Saban told Cowherd he doesn't like to recruit kids from California generally. He says they don't love football much as football players from the South. He said they have too many other interests. He said Sothern kids love football. He wants his players to live football as their hobby as well. Then Bucky Brooks, who was a scout for the Panthers and is an NFL analyst, came on. He said you can get skill players out West, but if you want to dominate in the trenches, you need take players from the South generally. Anyway, just thought you Southerners may find that interesting.

I agree with Bucky. They have good quality skill players every year. Best DTs seem to come from SE and OL I'd give an edge to midwest.

Yeah they were definitely generalizing. Reminds of what Jimmy the Greek said. He was on to something.

I’m not sure that I agree

With Saban on this one. Traditionally California produces solid players every year. I read once that Mater Dei high school had fifty players in the NFL. I’m not sure many can match that. I think if I was a baseball coach, California is the first place in the USA that I would look. I will agree that high school football in the South is the most competitive,

I just hope that Coach S can find us a big time center in the upcoming class regardless of where he lives!

I grew up near Mater Dei. I almost went to school there myself. Kind of a bad example due to the fact that it's private and they take most of the best talent from anywhere in Southern California. Parents relocate from all over the West to have their kids go play there.

Kind of like IMG Academy I guess. Clemson recruits them pretty hard too. As does everyone else.
Every time I think of California athletes I think of one of my favorite athletes as a kid. Jack E Jensen was one of two who participated in the baseball all star game, the World Series the college all star game and the Rose Bowl.

The first place Coach Howard visited in his search for football players was the coal mines of Pennsylvania when I was a Clemson student. He found some good ones too.

I think it's more of a urban/rural thing.

Jul 31, 2018, 3:02 PM

Urban/suburbia kids generally play more sports and have more interests as opposed to rural kids who play less sports and have less interests.

A lot of great basketball players from California. When I was in HS my HS football team, which I wasn't on, won the state championship. It wasn't even that big of a deal. Volleyball, basketball, and waterpolo were bigger sports. Those dudes got more chicks than the football players. There were a few really solid college football players on that team too that had good college careers, a couple with good NFL careers. It's not that same as the South generally.

I don't like Colin Cowturd

Ever since he made his "fraud" comment I have no inclination to even watch his over-rated show.

Our country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any America because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.

seems to me each player is different regardless

Of where he's from and it's a mistake to to restrict his ability according to his zip code.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Easier for Saban to recruit south bc he can use the SEC is the best.

Aug 1, 2018, 8:04 AM

And Bama is the best in it. Out west I'm sure alot of people get sick of hearing about the SEC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe it's true at the college level, but

Aug 1, 2018, 8:33 AM

It's not at all true at the pro level. According to Athlon the top NFL offensive tackle, David Bakhtiari, is from California. The top guard is Zack Martin from the midwest, in Indiana. The top center is Travis Frederick, also from the midwest, in Wisconsin.

On defense, the top DE's are Aaron Donald from Pittsburgh, and Calais Campbell from Denver. The top DT is Geno Atkins from South Florida (does that even qualify as the South anymore?).
