Nice interview with Brownell

Oct 25, 2022, 1:03 PM

on The Clemson Insider:

I'm glad he doesn't have the doom and gloom mentality some of our "fans" do.

I will admit I didn't fully read the article, I just skimmed through it. Is the plan still to try and out score the other team by shooting and making a 3 pointer on every possession?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, that’s not the plan.

Oct 25, 2022, 1:24 PM

You should read the interview. I think you’d enjoy it.

It's not plan. Just what will end up happening 75% of the time.

JK I’m going to watch this year. Not been a Brownell fan for a few years and finally got fed up to be honest. I love Clemson and even surprised myself in being able to tune it out, but there is a lot of chatter back and forth on TNet about basketball which has reignited my desire to tune back in.

When a fun year is being picked 11th after finishing 10th and hoping for 8th, its time to demand more of a 13th year HC.

Considering 68 teams get into the tournament, I would think that would be our expectation every year. What am I missing?

"Speaking of close games, seven of your conference losses last season came by two possessions or less. Did you learn anything about your coaching from all of those close calls?"

I mean, there’s always a play here there when you’re like, man, I wish I would have done this or made this substitution. Maybe had this guy guarding this guy. Would that have changed it? Do we play zone one time and try that? Do you soft press? There’s all kinds of little decisions that are easy in hindsight to look back at and say yes. And a couple of those games, certainly a changing-momentum situation or trying to just give the other team a different look maybe. Because, in hindsight, what we did didn’t work. So we’ve got to figure that part of it out. So yeah, I’ve got to do a little bit better job in that. I’ve got to make sure I try to make the right call to help my guys. And I think just our team understanding that and understanding that we’ve got to finish games better is something this team will continue to work at.

Brad added this earlier: "What happens is, like a lot of years it comes down to some close games. Winning 17 (games) and winning 21 or 22 is a fine line oftentimes, and I’ve got to help finish some games better for our guys. "

If Brad can turn this aspect of his coaching around, our fortunes on the hardwood would be greatly enhanced. Last year was not an aberration here, it's been a consistent feature of Brad's over his time as our coach. Hopeful these assistants we've added, who coached with Brad pre-ACC when he exhibited a better finishing touch, can help him here. The biggest beneficiaries would be our players, who suffer the brunt for those past failures the worst.

Go Tigers!

I’m glad to see Brownell stepping up to admit the role he plays in those tight games. Too many have gone against the Tigers and all too often that last possession has been outright failure. Either by completely missing something important on defense or an inability to create a good shot on offense. It’s hard to win matchups everytime but the coach can help with the right gameplan and often pushing the right buttons before a game becomes a one possession situation in the final minute. The Tigers have had a history of blowing large leads with offense that flat out disappears for up to 10 mins of action. For me that’s always been his biggest bugaboo. He doesn’t seem to be able to adapt and help his players break out of the scoring droughts. Often they just keep on launching deep jump shots and go right back on defense. The arrival of PJ Hall was promising because they finally had a guy who they can feed the ball who can make the contested shot closer to the basket and break the opponent’s momentum. Without Hall they need that slasher with size to attack the lane and create points. Hopefully, the Tigers have that in an improving Chase Hunter.

If what we needed all along was a UNC-Wilmington caliber staff why didn't we just hire UNC-Wilmington's entire staff. Because that's what we've done - it just took 13 years to get here.
