"Clemson will benefit better from a lower seed....

in any scenario because of their history and DNA they can't handle the pressure of a higher seed, and will probably get upset".

Discuss. Judge, lead the way, please.

been in the NCAA Tournament 11 times. It would be 12, but the 1990 Sweet 16 team had its wins vacated by the NCAA due to sanctions.

In 1980, we were a #6 seed. We beat #11 Utah State 76-73 in the first round, #3 BYU 71-66 in the second round, and #10 Lamar 74-66 in the Sweet 16. In our Elite 8 game against #8 UCLA, we lost 85-74.

In 1987, we were a #4 seed. We lost to #13 seed Southwest Missouri State 65-60 in the first round.

In 1989, we were a #9 seed. We beat #8 St. Mary's 83-70 in the first round, and lost to #1 Arizona 94-68 in the second round.

The 1990 NCAA Tournament team never happened according to the record books, but I'll include it here for the sake of discussion. That year, we were a #5 seed. In the first round, we beat #12 BYU 49-47. In the second round, we beat #4 La Salle 79-75. In the Sweet 16, we lost to #1 Connecticut 71-70.

In 1996, we were a #9 seed. We lost to #8 Georgia 81-74 in the first round.

In 1997, we were a #4 seed. We beat #13 Miami (OH) 68-56 in the first round, #5 Tulsa 65-59 in the second round, and lost to #1 Minnesota in the Sweet 16 90-84 in double OT.

In 1998, we were a #6 seed and lost to #11 Western Michigan 75-72.

In 2008, we were a #5 seed and lost to #12 Villanova 75-69 in the first round.

In 2009, we were a #7 seed. We lost to #10 Michigan 62-59 in the first round.

In 2010, we were a #7 seed. We lost to #10 Missouri 86-78 in the first round.

In 2011, we were a #12 seed. We beat #12 UAB in the first round, 70-52. We lost to #5 West Virginia 84-76 in the second round.

In 2018, we were a #5 seed. We beat #12 New Mexico State 79-68 in the first round, and #4 Auburn 84-53 in the second round. We lost to #1 Kansas in the Sweet 16, 80-76.

***

To summarize, in 23 NCAA Tournament games:

Our overall record is 11-12 (again, I'm including 1990 for the sake of discussion). If we take out the 1990 NCAA Tournament, we are 9-11).

As the higher seed (i.e., supposed to win), we have gone 6-5.

As a lower seed (i.e., supposed to lose), we have gone 4-7.

As an equal seed, we have gone 1-0.

***

To break it down under each coach:

Under Bill Foster, we were 2-0 as the higher seed, and 1-1 as the lower seed. Overall NCAA Tournament record under Foster was 3-1.

Under Cliff Ellis, we were 1-1 as the higher seed, and 2-2 as the lower seed. Overall NCAA Tournament Record under Ellis was 3-3. If you remove the 1990 results, he was 1-2.

Under Rick Barnes, we were 2-1 as the higher seed, and 0-2 as the lower seed. Overall NCAA Tournament Record under Barnes was 2-3.

Under Oliver Purnell, we were 0-3 as the higher seed. We were never the lower seed. Overall NCAA Tournament record under Purnell was 0-3.

Under Brad Brownell, we were 1-0 as the higher seed, 1-2 as the lower seed, and 1-0 as an equal seed. Overall NCAA Tournament record under Brownell is 3-2.

That shot was horrible to see, especially since it shouldn't have counted.

Mar 2, 2021, 5:41 AM

That was a fun run, but the Kansas game was not nearly as close as the final score indicated. We trailed the entire game by 20+ at times, but managed to hit a bunch of shots in the last few minutes to make the final score look close.

Some good stuff in there JK . . .

I listened to the UCLA game, using a crappy AM radio, on the roof of my house in North Carolina. Was it Hot Rod Foster or something like that ? The kid beat us to a pulp. I think I still have the Orange & White that talks about the Agony in Ogden . . . . or something like that. (Using that same radio, on the roof of my house, was the same way I listened to the football game against Tulane in the National Championship year. The Superdome was a MARVEL I could only DREAM about as I listened as a kid. Now - the Superdome is a dump that has been a house of horrors every time I have stepped into it. BUT - love me some NOLA. Yes - I just brought football into your basketball post)

In 1987, we were a #4 seed. We lost to #13 seed Southwest Missouri State 65-60 in the first round.

Was at that game - The Omni - typical low attendance first round game - can still hear the ECHOING, LOUD spelling of "B" "E" "A" "R" "S" as we never could get it together.

The UConn game - Got off a cruise, picked up the same buddy I went to the BEARS game with, drove to Key West and was able to pick up the game on the radio as we pulled into the marina area of KW. We sat in the parking lot and listened to the last few minutes. When we had the game won with a second left - we jumped out of the car to run into Turtle Kraals to start POUNDING beverages since we just beat the #1 team. About 20 steps from the front door - the place EXPLODED . . . . . loudest I have ever heard a bar. We knew exactly what had happened.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

but your analysis is incomplete. It would be worthy also to see how we've fared in the NIT and in the ACC tourneys under the same debate.

And there's a story you should hear, about Holmes and Watson going camping in the great outdoors under a beautiful sky. Perhaps it will help you to answer questions better and more to the point, and in condensed fashion.

"What do you see?" asked Holmes of Watson when they awoke.

"I see the moon," said Watson.

"What else?" asked Holmes.

"Well, thousands, maybe millions of stars."

"Oh, come on, you can do better than that," said Holmes.

"Well then," said Watson, "I see millions of galaxies out there sprawled to infinity."

"Watson, you idiot, when will you open your eyes? Someone has stolen our tent!"

That 2011 game against WVU was a total hose job.

Mar 1, 2021, 4:32 PM [ in reply to This won't take long to answer, since we have only ]

Clemson had to play the late game on 3/15 against UAB in Dayton, Ohio.

After the game, Clemson then had to fly all night to Tampa and be ready to play WVU in the early game on 3/17.

Clemson looked fatigued (especially in the second half) while WVU was well-rested since they hadn't played in about a week.

If you're going to schedule Clemson to play on 3/17, at least give them the late time slot so they can have a bit more time to rest. In fairness that game should have been played on 3/18.

Nice info. I think UCLA had to vacate their 1980 victory -

so does that mean we made a Final Four? :)

Also - are you saying the Tates George game never happened? That should add 3-4 years back on to the end of my life!

Probably my low point in terms of Clemson basketball.

Hopefully we can end someone else’s season that way in the NCAA Tournament soon. It would be nice payback.
