Next years basketball team

Apr 2, 2015, 8:59 AM

Is anyone else optimistic about next years basketball team?

At one point about midway through the ACC schedule we were pushing for 4th in the ACC and were in the first 4 in, in the NCAA Tournament predictions. Of course we had a miserable last 8 games and the rest is history.

The only person we are losing is Rod Hall, and we are supposed to get a scoring upgrade for him that will start next year. I know for a fact that next year we will have a better team. The question is, is how much better?

There are a lot of factors, but everything could potentially fall into place quite nicely. Blossomgame will take a small step forward and I expect that Grantham will be much better next year. If we can get Nnoko and Roper to be somewhat consistent, then I think that will be a huge boost. Along with Holmes, I think we could have a starting 5 that all average double figures or at least close to it.

We also have a few X Factors that could potentially step up. Devoe could figure it all out and have a great year. Djitte and Smith have shown glimpses of good basketball, so how much will they step up their game? We have a 7 footer as well as a 4* PG coming in and how much will they contribute? Brownell has finally gotten the depth that is needed to sustain success at Clemson.

NCAA Tourney or bust next year. I know that I would bet a lot of money that we will make it.

I am cautiously optimistic

I think the addition of Avery Holmes as a 3pt threat should be huge. He is also supposedly way faster than Hall which will help us push it a touch more. We add a couple of decent frosh for depth. Then you add another year of maturity and strength to what we have and I see us being much better. NIT at worst. Although, I hate the NIT. I could see us making the NCAA tournament if we can get out to a fast start and don't lose to some weak teams early.

Not only will we be much better, but the acc won't be as good.

I still stand by us making the NCAA Tourney

I am borderline on the same page. We also may sign a transfer too. If we stay healthy, add a quality transfer, we may be really solid next year. We have to stay healthy though.

I think Brownell is finally getting the pieces that he needs to contend with the upper echelon ACC teams. Blossomgame will flourish, along with Grantham and even Nnoko, when the Tigers get improved ball handling, passing ability and more intelligent play from the backcourt. The X factor will probably be Devoe's and Roper's long range shooting consistency. The freshmen will have to learn the system quickly to help where needed. Depth should be much improved.

It seems unlikely to me that we'll be any better...

Guards win games in college basketball, and we just don't have the talent at the position. Our returning guards are Roper (shot 34%), DeVoe (shot 27%), and Ajukwa (shot 36%). Unless they all take HUGE steps forward, our offense is going to continue to struggle mightily. With the loss of Hall, our perimeter defense will also get substantially worse.

Holmes and Hudson will help, but I'm just not that optimistic that either are difference makers. Holmes was almost predominantly a 3-point shooter (over 55% of his attempted shots in his career were from behind the arc) playing in a mid-major conference, and I can't imagine he'll be driving more against bigger players. Hudson should eventually be good, but true freshman point guards typically struggle. True freshman point guards on bad shooting teams struggle even more.

18 wins max. I hope I'm wrong. If we can get a little more

consistent play, we may be in a few more games, but I'm not sure that we have enough talent to compete.

Without a home court? I kind of doubt it.***

You forgot the Brownell factor...

Apr 2, 2015, 3:03 PM

He loses a lot of games.

On the UVA message boards, they call it the Mike London factor, the football team loses, no matter what the talent.

Will run a "faster" offense .....

IF they make the 30 second shot clock a fixture, they will of course, have too. That would be a good thing.
