Watson did a great job. But Stoudt did what was asked of him. He ran the ball when he was asked, not sure why Dabo called for him to run the ball so often. He also passed the ball well I believe he was 3 of 5 for 40 yards. That was not bad. I believe Stoudt held his own. I also believe many fans wated Watson to start because of his rating, but comeon Stoudt did a great job.

if Stoudt had not missed that super easy pass to a wide open Leggett he would have stayed in the game..another of the plays that cost us the gaME

If u think the fans want waston to start because of ranking you my friend can't spot talent. Waston makes plays and throws cole just can't do. I'm excited to see what we look like now that we are gonna design the offense around him. It just makes me upset it took this long. They should have at least rotated and gone with the hot hand since the first game.

Amen..Watson is just a better talent all around, Stoudt could start at several schools, so he's not a terrible QB...just not as good as Watson..

I am not saying Watson is not talented because he is. Since the beginning of camp fans wanted Watson to start, without ever playing a down, and it sounds like you are one of them. Stoudt did excellent last year. He competed 79.7 % of his passes last year (47 of 59 for 415 yards and 5 TD). So what are your facts stating that Cole can not make? If you are referring to the incomplete pass for a TD, yes he should have made it. But what would happen if Watson misses a pass, are you going to say bench him and he can't throw?

It seems that when cole is in the game, we only feel comfortable throwing screen passes. When deshaun comes in there is a whole different feel and the coaches let him sling it downfield. That's the biggest difference I've seen

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is a completely different called game when Watson is in

Sep 22, 2014, 8:38 AM

Coles numbers have come on short yardage passes, mostly screens. I dont know if it is because he always is going with his checkdown or if the coaches are calling plays where they feel he is comfortable making. But his stats are skewed with big YAC numbers from guys like Scott who take a pass 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage and take it for a 40 yard gain...looks like a big throw in the box score.

He hasn't done anything against a top-flight defense. Talent wise he isn't even in the same universe as DW.

If you can't see that Watson is far more talented than Cole, then you must be blind. Cole cost us an early TD with that awful throw to our wide open TE who could have walked into the end zone. And, no Stoudt would not start at most D-1 schools.

Watson is a wonderfully talented young man whose potential is limitless but what are you going to say when he is humanized in a game? Who are you going to yell for to replace him? Shussler(sp?) Olson? Just let us know who's next on your list?

I really think we are smarter than that. DW is playing behind an OL that is mediocre at best. If you can't see that DW is an exceptional QB, then you don't know shi$$ about football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

exactly, all of Coles yards came from Scotts screen pass

Feel bad for Cole, but Deshawn has earned the job. He is a special player and I think great thing will happen while he is behind center. Also so tired of loosing games like that to FSU. Couldn't stand seeing JW on the TV screen after every play. Thank goodness our star QB has class. Loved the way he acted when he blew off the comments from FSU player during game. Let's go win some games. Go Tigers!

You are right about that. I think that made the loss that much worse. I was hoping JW was goin to get the punishment he deserved.

Moving in right direction. . Is it me or does the O do much better when they run a faster tempo. It appears that they talk about being fast O but forget. They're running the same plays and the other teams is picking up on that as game moves on. Please don't give me this about making it simple for this young guys, they're not a little league team. Dabo mentioned that they're better than the 1st game. Yes, I would agree. But, I can think of a few folks that are making a butt load of money to have the team ready out of the box. Again, this is not a little league football. Overall the performance from the coaching side. Defense played lights out. The other side, play calling was terrible. Just call it the way I see it. Yes, mistake was a big factor but guys played hard.

Please put the excitement back into our offense plays. That what drew many of this year and next year talent players to Clemson. Watching many of the other colleges spread team offensive highlight reels yesterday, We seen to be taking the excitement out of the offense performance. What happen to the 1st, 2nd, and even 3rd different options all in one play. What look like run or read option could possible be a misdirection or reverse, then ends up being a drop back pass play or down the line pass play while on the run. Even the camera crew couldn't keep up or was left in doubt at times, better along the opposing team defenses.

I think our offense has regressed, and has become very predictable. And, the play calling when we needed one yard to score was stupid beyond compare.

The play calling was terrible, especially in the critical short yardage situations where we could have scored. If Chad is an offensive genius, I didn't see it in this game.

If I were Cole, which I am not, I'd tell the coach you've made your decision, now go with it and leave me the H3LL alone over here on the bench! But you and I both know that won't happen but it would be funny.

Cole is much slower than DW, and I'm not convinced that he is a better runner. Plus putting him in under center in those situations is an absolute telegraph to the opposing D. Give up on the Cole bandwagon. DW is and will be the man.

The only time we ran DW near the goal line, he ran it in and scored.

Coaching and loss

Sep 21, 2014, 10:12 PM

The missed throw by Stout was HUGE. Great play call and a simple throw he just failed to execute.
FGs - not sure what to say but our offensive strategy will change because of this major deficiency.
BV did a great job and made some great adjustments in the second half to what Jimbo had adjusted at half.
CM - again made multiple bonehead calls in key situations. It is becoming a pattern. I've lost a lot of confidence in his abilities to win big games.
I had at least 25 FSU fans come up to me after the game and almost apologize for winning. Most said they were just lucky. Some said we lost due to our coaches. I think it was some of both.

The season comes down to the dirt ###### game. It is the ONLY thing to make this season salvageable.

That missed pass by stoudt wasn't a contributing factor because we still had a chance to win. QBs miss throws from time to time so let's cut him some slack. But those 2 field goals are probably what deflated us. That's 3 chip shots he's missed on. Gotta have those points

Using your reasoning from the first sentence, then the missed FG's didn't contribute to the loss either, since we still had a chance to win. How can you make that first statement, and then the second. Makes no sense. Especially considering the first missed FG would not have happened without the missed pass. They all contributed to the loss, among other things.

I understand what you're saying and how you interpreted what I wrote. I was speaking only to the fact that we left those points on the field and even with the missed throw the game would have been different if he hits one of those field goals.

Re: Coaching and loss

Sep 22, 2014, 9:45 AM [ in reply to Coaching and loss ]

I can't understand how people continue to say the missed throw in the second series of the game cost Clemson a victory. QB's miss throws from time to time and if every QB was pulled for missing a pass there would be none left to play the game.
Second, a statement made going back decades is that "the game is never won in the first three quarters" if a team cannot finish in the fourth it doesn't deserve to win. Clemson didn't finish, they never threw the knockout punch late in the game.
And for a coaching staff to publicly state they are not comfortable putting a guy under center for less than a yard in a game that could determine essentially your season on fourth down in overtime! Come on, that is football 101. Not buying that EXCUSE and that is what it is and flat out EXCUSE!

Dabo has made a good analysis of the game film. Let's see if it transcends to the rest of the staff this week during practice. Biggest challenge is special teams ( field goals ) and pass/run blocking.
