Venables looking for sixty minutes from defense

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables liked what we saw from his unit in the first half Saturday against South Carolina. The third quarter? Not so much. Full Story »

The breakdown on the option pitch was painful.

Nov 29, 2015, 12:22 PM

The guy on the pitch man just 'mailed it in' when the play looked to be dying. Assignment football -- if he had played his assignment, he could have literally BLOWN that guy up for a loss of 5. But he got greedy and wanted a piece of the QB. Result - run to the 1 yd line and then points.

They are not playing as disciplined as they were earlier in the year.

Ben boulware is the problem on alot of these busts.....he's a high risk high reward guy......teams are scheming him up on the option....going back to the Syracuse game, he has the pitch man and he ignores his job and leaves the pitch man open and it burns us every time!

It's good to be aggressive, but the loss of containment on USuC's last TD is something we've seen b4 and I'm sure BV is working on. The heat of the moment is hard to mentally overcome too. But I trust our guys and coaches to get it done in the long, best ever in a long time, season. GO TIGERS, BEAT the tar holes ! (Badly if you can, but by one point, just as good!)

When will people stop acting like BJ is part of the problem by saying stuff about the lb corps.

he was also playing injured yesterday

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, it's pretty much Boulware alone.

Nov 29, 2015, 2:02 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Venables looking for sixty minutes from defense ]

Not sure how many assignments he has to blow before O'Daniel or someone else gets a shot.

I myself was wondering what was going on with Boulware yesterday. Definitely not the Boulware from the beginning of the year. He was not a factor at all yesterday. Didn't wrap up, did not hit anybody like we seen in the past and slow getting back on his feet after a play. Ether his is still hurt, broke up with a girlfriend or just tried from the long season and wishes it was over. But what every the issue was yesterday, he needs to be pulled. I watch the LB 75% of time and he absolutely did nothing. Don't know whats happened.

I think you may want to look at some of these plays again. In my observations it is not just BB. There are a couple of players on that line that that are missing their assignments to go after the QB. These are college kids so I am not comfortable throwing their names around, just take note.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Boulware was directly responsible for two of the TDs

Nov 29, 2015, 3:01 PM

yesterday.

He blew the option assignment for NO reason. Orth was contained, he didn't need to help on the QB, yet he left the RB all alone.

And then he just didn't cover the RB out of the backfield on their garbage time TD. Flat blown.

Goodson missed his gap a couple of times, but his mistakes weren't nearly as costly.

Blanks blew the coverage on the Cooper TD.

I think these guys are mature enough to handle being called out when they mess up. Not like I love 'em any less, just saying what I see.

If I am not mistaken Boulware calls the Defensive set

Nov 29, 2015, 2:42 PM [ in reply to Yeah, it's pretty much Boulware alone. ]

and nor Goodson or O'Daniel know it as well. Boulware's busts are begining to hurt and Goodson ought to know enough to let O'Daniel get in to send the message to Boulware to play his assignments. He knows what they are he just is always wanting to be "the guy" instead of "one of the guys."

Coach V, I'm looking for two things from you...

Nov 29, 2015, 2:14 PM

1) As fast as UNC plays, I'm looking for you to call the defensive play quicker. Was the team even lined up when the coots punched it in at the goal line? How may times were the D players looking at the sideline with the USuCk QB standing there with his hands up ready to take the snap.

2) As great as Ben B has been all year, something is missing and/or he's hurt. I'm looking for you to evaluate whether or not he should be starting this week or not. There's been a lot of missed assignments at the line and worse yet, missed tackles.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn't Lawson admit they were looking at sidelines

Nov 29, 2015, 3:22 PM

too much?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree on both points

Nov 30, 2015, 8:57 AM [ in reply to Coach V, I'm looking for two things from you... ]

the time it has taken to get the defensive plays called in has seemed to get slower and slower over the last couple games. Something needs to give, either the players are not picking up the play the first time it is called or the method has gotten to complicated. There were many times if SCAR would have done a quick snap we would not have been in position, not just on the quick TD run.

Boulware has always been a liability. He plays rogue and tries to guess the play to much. He makes some great plays but for every clutch 4th down tackle he has had there are a multitude of mistakes he has had as well. Unfortunately I think it may show the lack of talent and depth we have at LB when he is not being subbed out when he is struggling. I really hope we get Reshaun Smith and that him and Tre Lamar are true dominate LB's like we had with Steward and Anthony.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Agree on both points

Nov 30, 2015, 12:27 PM

Along the same lines, it looks like the other teams pick up on every one of our blitzes and either shoot the holes with a long run or dump a short pass, and with no one home in the lb position, it goes for a long gain. The blitzes somehow need to be disguised a bit better or used less frequently.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would be wonderful.***

Re: I say the defense has lost it's desire......

Nov 29, 2015, 3:09 PM

.... to show it has a nasty attitude, to impose their will, to make EVERY play count and for some to think they are next level talent ( which they are not..... yet ). They show more mouth than action down the stretch. In the 1st five games ( I am not counting Wofford and App St ) the defense was giving up an average of 265 yard per game. In the last five games they are giving up an average of 325 yards per game. In the last 3 games the Tigers have been out scored in the 2nd half and most notably in the SC game they were outscored in the 2nd half 29-23. From my perspective I see the issue being FOCUS and a WANT. Can it get corrected? Yes and it's an immediate correction. The home stretch has arrived and it's time to leave it ALL on the field for the Offense and especially the Defense. The mantra is "All In". This goes for the coaches also. When the "All" is given for EVERY play then no questions or regrets will show up for each individual.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Look for them to be breathing fire next Saturday

Nov 29, 2015, 3:22 PM

There is no need to complain about it. Do you think for a second that BV is mailing it in? Of course not. That BB isn't playing hard? Heck no. There are flaws in their game sure. Those same plays that hurt us against LV, ND, etc are still there. We have who we have. Lost some highly key components before the first game kicked off that I believe made a difference. We haD some experience, but little depth at LB. Let's face it, there have been a few games where the offense bailed them out, and some the other way around.

If we can get two scores for every one the opponent gets (often the case) then we are fine. Win or lose the rest of the way, I'm proud as heck of these boys and know they could be even better next year.

Question is...

Nov 29, 2015, 3:45 PM

how many pts will it take to beat UNC?

We look great for a majority of games on d. Just read on Clemson insider we gave up 157yds on 4 plays. Its the 4-7 chunk plays we give up.

It seems all of Clemson nation knew that when Nunez was in there he was running the ball, not passing it. And the same with Cooper. There should have 1-2 guys specifically on him the WHOLE time. Yet they weren't. Hopefully they correct these missed assignments soon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are good on first down

Nov 30, 2015, 1:04 PM

Seems everyone plays straight up assignment football. Then we guess and gamble a little on second and third based on situations we created on first.

This D is very good if we play our assignments. It's showtime from here out, boys.
