New Story: No decision on backup quarterback as spring enters final stretch

No decision on backup quarterback as spring enters final stretch

Who will be the backup quarterback when Clemson takes the field at Auburn in early September? Will it be the talented Kelly Bryant or can the veteran Nick Schuessler lay claim to the job? Will Tucker Israel make inroads over the summer, or will newcomer Zerrick Cooper push his name into the fray?

I predict Kelly will change positions next year

Mar 31, 2016, 3:43 PM

If he's not the man. Way too athletic and fast not to be on the field.

It's a distinct possibility ... because

Clemson has a long and fairly impressive history of switching athletic QBs over to defense ... Terrence Mack, Patrick Sapp, Dexter McCleon, Andy Headen, and even though he didn't go to DB until he was with the Cowboys, there's Charlie Waters.

I'm afraid Bryant will transfer before he doesn't stay at QB . But I'm sure he could be great at several positions .

A lot will be revealed by whether or not he can push Schuessler aside over the next couple of months and solidify the #2 QB spot at Clemson. If he can't accomplish that much by this fall, then his future as an NFL QB has to be questioned and transferring just to get playing time would probably be a mistake. He has the size and athleticism to get on the field for Clemson as a starter in some capacity. If it's at QB then that's great, but if not, he should move to another spot ... safety IMHO.

It will help him play on Sundays too.**

RayRay to cb. Bryant to WR.

Mar 31, 2016, 4:06 PM

We are stacked enough for that and they will have better NFL careers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Bryant could play defense too

Mar 31, 2016, 4:16 PM

but he's built for WR today. Defense he'd need some weight and time.

I just haven't seen all these things the coaches say Ray Ray can do. Maybe this year he will. I think he'd make an excellent Corner. If anything I saw more from Cain at WR and Ray Ray was supposed to be the better of the two.

Ray Ray was never supposed to be the better WR.

Apr 1, 2016, 9:46 AM

Cain was much more highly thought of as as a wr coming in, even though he was once a QB.

Stop trying to make RayRay to CB happen***

Rarely see acknowledgement Israel top passer in FL history

Mar 31, 2016, 7:38 PM

Guy must have some passing chops. Wasn't he ahead of Bryant and Schuessler last year before he got hurt or is that just bad memory on my part?

Anyway, I agree coaches should leave 2nd string QB open until summer practice makes things evident.

I think its rarely acknowledged because high school accolades mean nothing now..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Translating to the "next level" may be an issue ... sort of

Apr 1, 2016, 10:52 AM

like Tajh Boyd's Clemson records translating to the NFL ... we'll see.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The QB at Wake is #3 in total yards and #2 in total TD

Apr 1, 2016, 10:56 AM [ in reply to Rarely see acknowledgement Israel top passer in FL history ]

and there's a reason he didn't get any big time offers. Shuler Bentley has the record for most touchdowns in SC history and he plays at Old Dominion. High school stats are pretty much meaningless.

Look at this list and tell me how many names your recognize http://bigcountypreps.com/181/record-books/records/florida-prep-football-qb-passing-records/

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Backup? Are we really sure this #4 guy is going to stick?
