NFL execs taking notice of Stephone Anthony at Senior Bowl

Clemson fans saw linebacker Stephone Anthony make plays in the middle of the Clemson defense over the last four seasons, and now NFL executives are getting a chance to see what the North Carolina native can do. Anthony excelled during Wednesday's practice session, and he spoke to the media about his week. Photo by John David Mercer / USATODAY Full Story »

Why did Crawford pass on this opportunity?

I dont know, bad advice, he could be out there with

Jan 22, 2015, 9:43 AM

grady and stephone impressing the scouts and moving up the board. I think he has NFL potential, but he's kind of been hidden behind Anthony, Vic, and grady as far as "stars" of our defense. If anybody needed this kind of one on one week it was Crawford.

I think that you answered the question of why he isn't out there. I'm not in anyway trying or attempting to take anything away from Cory b/c at his position he has been a very good player, person, and team mate for our Tigers. But honestly, if I know that I'm interviewing for a job and a spot on a NFL roster. I don't want Stephone Anthony's play or skill showing up any where in my interview especially if an NFL team could be looking at me as an NFL LB. It ain't about college football anymore with those guys, it's about trying to get a job with the NFL... With our 2014 defense being as loaded as it was, players like Anthony, Jarret, and Beasley always had shinning moments in about every game. I don't won't to interview with any of those 3 if my star isn't shinning as bright as theirs. Their talent and skill is strong enough to make very good players skill look to be mediocre....

Yep. He should be one of the first taken. And jarret will be a steal whatever number he go's. Not sure why these guys are surprises. Number one defense. Should make a few lights come on.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

People STILL believe the best defense is played in the SEC.

Jan 22, 2015, 9:09 AM

It's a surprise when a team outside that media construct actually has talent. Most of the analyst sheep just assume a #1 defense that is no $EC hasn't proven anything because they don't play Ole Miss and Vandy.

Re: Stephone Anthony - not surprised

Really no surprise that he is that good! – however if you were to ask ESPN they would say he is overrated ha ha!

ESecPN would sya that he is overrated because he is not from "their" league. It really doesn't matter what they say. They have been super wrong all year about so many things. The whippings their teams took in the bowl games is evidence of that.

Grady and Anthony may not be as highly regarded by ESPN but the NFL doesn't care. It's stinks for those guys, along with Crawford, that they don't get the credit nationally, but scouts watch film, go to games, go to combines, and never consult Jessie Palmer.

A perfect example would be Sammy Watkins last year. He got a good amount of credit from ESPN during his time at CU, but was regarded as the third best receiver behind USC's Marquise Lee, and A&M's Mike Evans. When the draft rolled around and he was objectively evaluated next to his peers, he was seen as a generational talent, and no one else was even close

Re: Stephone Anthony - not surprised

Absolutely correct! As far as Jesse Palmer, if he is on the broadcast, the mute button is activated. Why doesn't someone at ESPN tell him to stop buying his suits in the Boys Department?

Sounds like Mr Anthony as well as Mr Jarrett are both turning heads down in Mobile. Dabo down there is probably doing some of that to. Got to thinking about this yesterday, would it blow people's mind if the same team picked both of them in separate rounds ? That would probably be the first time ever happening, but boy what a handful their opponents would have in the game if both were.playing.Good.luck guys and GO TIGERS!!!

The fact that Anthony and Jarrett are surprising people

Jan 22, 2015, 10:35 AM

shows how little football most of these "experts" watch...

No one should be shocked. Stephone was a highly rated, highly talented LB out of high school who produced over his four year career and made big play after big play when Clemson needed it often at the most crucial point in games. He'll be a solid pro for a long time.

I really hope my Giants pick up Anthony somewhere in the 3rd-4th round. We're in desperate need of an every down lb and Anthony would be a huge steal!!

He handles himself like a Clemson alum

Jan 22, 2015, 11:50 AM

“At Clemson we are told how to handle ourselves in the interviewing process. I was just prepared for the situation and had some heads up on things. I was fortunate that I just had people wanting to talk to me. All of the teams have shown some interest. I am just happy that they have shown some interest.”

Take note, football recruits.

Clemson had the #1 D in the country for a reason

Jan 22, 2015, 12:37 PM

Other than Beasley, Clemson's defensive prospects are criminally underrated by NFL scouts right now.

FSU's D is losing four underclassmen...all of whom project to be high-round draft picks. They have Goldman as a 1st-rounder...and keep insisting Grady Jarrett is a 3rd-rounder and Anthony might be a 5th-rounder. They don't have guys like Steward, Peters, and Smith listed as "draftable" prospects at all. Leaves me scratching my head...especially when you consider how dominant Clemson's D was this year...and how dominant FSU's defense isn't.

Clemson's D really didn't have any weaknesses this year. The only team that moved the ball with any kind of consistency on Clemson's D - at all - was Georgia in Week 1...we were also short Crawford and Peters, and the absolutely stifling 100-degree heat in Athens that night was amplified by the fact that Clemson's offense gained a net total of 17 yards and, I believe, zero first downs in the second half of the game. They sort of wilted.

Nobody else moved the ball, and especially the chains, on Clemson all year. And it was because Clemson had durn good players everywhere on the defense. We literally did not have a single weak link.

If the NFL guys are as objective as they claim, they'll really, really look at the film - and start realizing just how good these players really were. It for durn sure wasn't Vic Beasley and ten palookas. I doubt we'll see that kind of collection of players again for awhile in Tigertown. Anybody, for instance, who takes Eddie Goldman over Grady Jarrett, or any middle linebacker in the draft over Stephone Anthony, probably news a new set of glasses.
