New Degree Programs for JUCO Athletic Transfers?

Feb 8, 2014, 9:32 AM

I keep hearing that it is difficult for JUCO football players to transfer to Clemson because the university lacks particular degree programs. Is this notion true? Which degree programs would be required to get more JUCO athletes? Would not these new programs be in ridiculously easy "jock" majors that offer blatantly gut courses? Are Communications and PRTM too hard for these guys or am I missing something?

Not sure what our deal is on this but it keeps getting mentioned as a problem. they say it will get addressed. then nothing happens. either fix it or move on would be my hope. there is no reason for this to be a show stopper.

Someone mentioned by 2015 or 2016 a program that will help jucos get in.It does hurt when FSU and other rivals have this option.

Think PRTM was the program most went in. When the school cut that juco became a prob. I would hope clemson would add a sport managment.

The NCAA should allow JC tranfers to play

Feb 8, 2014, 10:09 AM

a total of 5 years. Stay at JC 1 year, get 4 years at big college, stay 2 years at JC, get 3 years at big college. Treat JC like prep school and allow that extra year for these young men to get their degrees. Most young men are in JC because they were behind academically , shouldn't expect them to graduate in 4 years.

not disagreeing with you, but i'd rather high school

Feb 8, 2014, 10:15 AM

teachers, advisors, parents do a better job... goes for all levels before.

why should the "next level" have to police the prior level's "shortcomings"?

and honestly, some people just aren't going to make it.

Clemson has a number of kids who go off to prep school to develop better studying skills. We have players from Fork Union, Hargrave and others all the time.

There has been talk of adding a General Studies program to the curriculum but thus far it hasn't developed. Many schools have this as a major and it works very well for students who desire a college education with no particular career in mind. I think it will happen.

No child left behind!! Appears we must dummy down the college experience to be competitive with SEC in recruiting. Lot's of the football recruits even speak to their next 3 years on a college campus! Not saying I would have the strength to turn down millions of dollars in my bank account for 9 more months of study hall!! :)

i think it's on parents and students. i've seen brilliant

students at every school i ever attended, be it the highest or lowest rated in academic's in the area.
athletes have, for years now, knew what grades and scores they must attain in order to play d-1 football immediately after h.s., i think it's more on them and the parent(s).

accountability sgt; too often it's easier to allow kids to

Feb 8, 2014, 11:25 AM

move through the system without consequences; it breeds 'entitlement' or worse.

“The kids were seeing that it didn’t matter. Whatever they did, they were going to pass anyway,” said McBride, whose son is a junior. “My child, in particular, said, ‘You know Mom, I go to school every day, I do my best, but I look around and the kids who are not even trying are passing, so why should I continue to try? Why should I continue to study?’”

http://blogs.ajc.com/get-schooled-blog/2013/03/21/from-canada-to-georgia-teachers-complain-of-pressure-to-change-grades-to-mask-high-failure-rates/

there are stories everywhere about the failings at the school level[there are good reasons for this, many of which are cultural]. these 'passing' numbers are important for many reasons & the pressures are often much greater when an athlete is involved.

yes, i think parents should shoulder most of the blame, but they do entrust their children to the system for 12ish years of school, 40+ hours a week.

Situations like that

Feb 8, 2014, 12:19 PM

are a direct result of the "everyone gets a trophy" environment we live in today. You don't want to fail little Johnny because that might hurt his feelings so give him a passing grade because feelings are more important than education.

Not to mention the totally screwed up way some funding from the state and federal government is handed down to the schools with the best test scores. Of course the school in danger of losing funding is going to cook the grades to a level where they keep getting the money.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course it is.....and it kind of rankles me that the onus

Feb 8, 2014, 11:29 AM [ in reply to i think it's on parents and students. i've seen brilliant ]

always falls on teachers and counselors....I'm not naive enough to think that every HS teacher has the talents of a Professor Kingsfield in the movie "Paper Chase", but the vast majority I've met over the decades were dedicated professionals who'd do whatever it took to make their students better academically.

I'm also not naive enough to think that every child comes from a terrific home environ. But, as you posted, the initial incumbency should fall on the shoulders of the student and parents. They ALL know the work required to make good grades

onus "always falls on teachers and counselors"? they do

Feb 8, 2014, 11:34 AM

have a duty and they should absolutely be held accountable as should the parents & students.

Communications is actually very selective at Clemson

Feb 8, 2014, 10:34 AM

PRTM is a breeze, though

Re: Communications is actually very selective at Clemson

Feb 8, 2014, 11:11 AM

Our degree programs at CU are just fine as they are. If a player wants to come to CU then he/she can, but, will need to be accepted for the degree programs offered. Football is not the priority; education is and should be.

Re: New Degree Programs for JUCO Athletic Transfers?

Feb 8, 2014, 11:09 AM

Yes for those committing to SEC instead of ACC except for Tarholes!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not majors that are the problem

Feb 8, 2014, 11:46 AM

Clemson does not except transfer credits for most majors. That means JC transfers would be starting over at clemson. That is a hard sell. It is also an issue with transferring as a regular student to clemson. Had a roommate who lost a large portion of credits when transferring and had to retake a lot of classes. We are not looking to create new majors just for players. We are looking to work within majors to allow players to count some JC coursework towards a clemson degree.

It all boils down to Clemson not having a P.E. degree

Feb 8, 2014, 11:52 AM

Most of the "elite" JUCO players at Hutchinson or Coffeyville are (barely) getting associates degrees in P.E./Health/Exercise Science. IF we enrolled them but didn't bend the rules on accepting transfer credits, most would be freshmen in terms of credits earned but juniors in terms of eligibility (two years to play two). Practically none would ever graduate from Clemson and our graduation rates would plummet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gets it ^^^^^^^ That xtra year would GIVE players

Feb 8, 2014, 12:46 PM

that started off behind the 8 ball a chance to FINISH a real degree, not an easy made up one.

Feb 8, 2014, 12:38 PM

using my paid state tax money to make up degrees with the purpose of making it easier for JuCo athletes to transfer. I'm a die hard Tiger fan, but the integrity and level of quality education available at Clemson University will always reign over the need to dumb it down for some transfer athletes.

Communications is popular

Feb 8, 2014, 12:51 PM

And under staffed, so it's a real ##### to get in. Even some of our football players have to jump through hoops to get into that major. It's very well ran. Wish they could either get more people working in that dept
