New baseball coach coming to the same problems

May 31, 2022, 7:22 PM

Monty had. 11.7 scholarships. Out of state players having to pay $20,000 of out of state tuition to play for Clemson. If Clemson doesn’t fix this problem then the next head coach is doomed to the same results. You have to get top talent to play in regionals, super-regionals and Omaha.

Duke are using that helps them. Not sure why we can't be as good as UNC, Virginia etc. though.

UVA and Duke have billion $ endowments so they limit how much a student (and student) has to borrow to get a degree. The thing is Clemson can’t target a benefit to the baseball team which is not offered to every student

Clemson is not bankrupt with a one-billion-dollar endowment.

I asked this before and got no answers. Could a “local business” offer an NIL deal to every baseball player to make up what scholarships don’t cover? I know the players are not required to use NIL to pay tuition but if it nets zero we could recruit on par with vandy and uva. It would cost a lot less than current football NIL deals to cover the whole baseball team.

While this is true, I still don’t believe how a college level baseball player doesn’t know how to run bases, field or make contact with a pitched baseball. A coach that can simply teach fundamentals could win another 5-6 games a year at Clemson with the current players

They don't recruit players with baseball skills.

They recruit power hitters and pitchers and hope the other stuff works out.

No one gets a scholarship because they can bunt or run bases...

So …one of the coaches told you this? Seems like a losing formula to me

Every coach in D-1 has the same number of scholarships since it is set by the NCAA. Fees at Clemson are very low compared to other schools so money has nothing to be with recruiting baseball players.

Not true. Clemson rivals private schools with fees and room board etc. private schools seem to have more $ for scholarships. It’s crazy but it can be done. We need a really smart go getter who can teach and motivate the team.

That is correct Shirleyb. Tuition, Room, Board, Books, Fees and etc. has Clemson's out-of-state student cost up to almost $59,000 a year. With a half scholarship they are paying over $29,000 a year. If Clemson is a dream school, then an out-of-state baseball player can go Clemson for about the same price as a SC resident and may be appealing. If it's only about baseball, not so much.

Nig money donors and private school endowments give

May 31, 2022, 10:50 PM [ in reply to Re: New baseball coach coming to the same problems ]

some schools a tremendous advantage over Clemson.

Vandy pumps a ton of money into baseball scholarships and the author John Grisham gave UVA $4 million when his son played for The Hoos.

They don’t pump money into baseball FCS. Vandy’s cost of attendance is tied to family income and assets. Regardless of playing sports if you are accepted to Vanderbilt if your family income is below $100,000 it costs nothing attend and then goes on a sliding scale to about $250,000. This is a very rough estimate because family assets are also factored in. So, yes, Corbin has a tremendous advantage recruiting players from families with income under $100k and little to no assets. But by about $150k the advantage is phased out because Vanderbilt is ridiculously expensive. If sliding scale cost of attendance was that big of a deal the Ivy League would be the most dominant league in athletics in non-revenue sports.

I agree, but still it’s an advantage that Clemson

Jun 1, 2022, 9:41 AM

doesn’t enjoy.

Waiving tuition is sort of the same as pumping money into the program.

But I understand what you’re saying and appreciate the clarification.

Having a great coach is certainly the biggest advantage Vandy has.

99% of all the schools have the same problems.
It takes a leader that can draw that fine line and get the job done .
