NEVER FORGET! Woody Hayes punched Charlie Bauman in 1978.

Dec 7, 2016, 10:57 AM

I have not forgotten that moment, and have been waiting for the Tigers to get an opportunity to avenge the insult. Well, it's taken 38 years, but we've got the rematch we've all been waiting for. Hopefully the coaches are aware, and don't let this opportunity go to waste.

I think Bauman suffered from depression after the incident in 1978 due to publicity. I'm not sure if he wants the spotlight.

I was at this game with my 7-months pregnant young wife sitting rather high up, but on the same side of the field and directly in line with the incident. I was too far away to see the details of the punch, in fact, I couldn't even tell that Charlie was punched by WH. But, I remember seeing Charlie run towards the Clemson sideline before collapsing midfield around the 50 yard. At the time, I had no idea why he collapsed. Interestingly, the collapse was never shown on TV (at least I never saw it on a replay). I think if you look closely at this replay you can see that the strike is not consistent with a punch to the helmet, but is instead consistent with a thumb to the throat - exactly how you would attack a man wearing a helmet. I believe to this day that Charlie got thumbed in the throat, that is why he collapsed on the field, and that is why, ultimately, the SOB was gone the next day. The two universities, and later the media, covered up the depravity of what really happened.

Sorry my first post has to be on such an unpleasant topic, but some things need to be remembered as they really happened, not as they were later revised.

I was there too. I didn't know what the commotion was about until i caught the news later that night. Looking at the replay it pretty obvious that Woody Hayes knew what he was doing punching Charlie's throat. I've wondered how many other players were punched by him. Opponents or tOSU.

Was at the game as well. Saw the fight, but no idea Woody had punched our player. Ohio State did the right thing by firing him go in spite of his being an undeniable legend. He clearly made a mistake,... and paid the price for it. Guess Clemson felt no need to tag on any further embarrassment,... always glad we could exercise some graciousness in that regard.

this carp from him had been going on for years. shoving photogs, tearing up down markers, hitting his own guys. It only got stopped when the program had fallen off some and it was convenient. then the later put him in their ring of honor. And that is what Ohio States culture is all about. Win at football.

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

Yes. I did the math like this...

Dec 7, 2016, 1:19 PM

If @cutigerbob makes 2016 posts, and 1978 of them are extremely terrible, how many posts did bob make that weren't extremely terrible.

2016 posts - 1978 extremely terrible = 38 not extremely terrible, just regular terrible

Now, substitute "years" for "posts" and we see that there have been 38 years since 1978.

;)
