Neff Didn't Do Brownell Any Favors

Apr 20, 2022, 8:37 AM

I am not sure what kind of AD Neff will turn out to be but he bungled the Brownell situation IMO. You can read into Neff's basketball comments anything you like, but at the end of the day it was an ultimatum for Brownell. How many times in college sports has an ultimatum like this worked for any coach? Never. All it does is allow the competent assistants to go get other jobs because they perceive their boss as a lame duck. If I knew my boss had been given an ultimatum to produce results in the next 12 months he has never produced before, I would likely bolt as soon as I could. Why did Neff handle it this way? The right thing to do for Brownell would have been to go ahead and let him go now. Makes no sense to let the guy twist in the wind knowing how it will end. It also just sets the program even further behind. He's still young. I made my share of mistakes as a young leader too. Hopefully he learns handles it better in the future.

The “ultimatum” was light on specifics. If he has a winning ACC record and/or makes the NCAA he will keep his job.

And he has done both in the past.

The intimation wasn’t to reach the final four or even sweet 16 next year.

Neff kept Brownell because of PJ Hall and pressure from Brownell supporters. Just from reading tea leaves, I believe Neff wanted to make a change. There is some thought that Neff's letter also served another purpose, to send a signal to potential future head coach candidates that he takes basketball seriously and is willing to put the resources into winning. I agree, I think a decision should have been made to make a change this year.

I think Neff did what he needed to do. His primary responsibilities are the program and the folks who support it (IPTAY folks and ticket stakeholders). Sitting back and not saying anything or putting out what would likely be false votes of confidence was not as good as making it clear, as a new AD, what the expectations are and how each party should be expected to handle them. He stated additional support would be given and in exchange a higher level of results need to happen.

Brad's point about facility issues earlier are valid, but the facts are, other than 2018-19 (when he was coaching for his job), the results are pretty similar to what they were before the upgrades. Instead of a deep NIT run like he had with McDaniels, we had one NCAA tourney with a first round loss. He returned 4 of 5 starters from the best team since 2007-08 and couldn't make the tourney in 2019-2020.

Could his letter and statements negatively affect things in the short term? Perhaps, and you can argue that they have in regards to staff overturn, but put me in the camp that is fine with that if it can ultimately lead to a step up in the basketball program vs. continuing the status quo of being perpetually average.

Neither did Brad over the past few years. Ho-hum, I’m sure he has a nice nest egg.
