Need help with recruiting math - are we through recruiting?

Jan 17, 2018, 9:28 AM

losing 7 scholarship players + talk of 3 transfers = 10

2018 commits = 15

Who are the other 5 that are leaving or do 5 commits wait till 2019 to enroll?

I will let you know in 19 days.

Likely there will be some walkons getting scholies over the summer. There always is.

Dabo always has a little surprise for us on signing day.***

I'm confused

Jan 17, 2018, 9:39 AM

I saw all year that we had 6 scholarship seniors. We had 4 juniors leave early. So that's 10 plus the 3 possible transfers is 13. Add in a few walk-ons that received scholarships last year that may have been told it's a one year deal and I'm guessing the coaches will make room for about 3-4 more signees in February.

Also, and I may be wrong on this one, but weren't we sitting under 85 scholarships this past season after Pagano and Baker decided to leave after signing day?

Not sure where your numbers are coming from but this link should help you get the picture.:

Basically we've already had 5 non-seniors leave since the ACCCG (Deon, RayRay, Hearn, Van Smith, and Trapp). We have 9 seniors (3 of whom had 1 year walk-on schollies but were still counting towards our 85). Now we're at 14. We still technically have 1 guy (Spiers) who had a 1 year walk-on scholarship that we could pull if we need it but I doubt Dabo does this. A more likely scenario is we have 2 or 3 more transfers before summer which will bring us up to 16 or 17 open scholarships and we'll either add a few more players on signing day or give those scholarships to walk-ons over the summer.

I count 12 that will be 5th year seniors. Dabo has said the 5th year is not promised.

We are at 80 and have 9 seniors on scholarship and 2 walk-ons that's 16 right there

probably 2-3 more that will transfer or quit football all together for some reason

scholarship numbers

Jan 19, 2018, 3:30 AM

A friend of mine works for Tenn recruiting department, and said that they have several different options, the main being a "blueshirt", which is essentially an extra scholarship that gets deducted from next years class. The one stipulation is a player is only eligible for a blueshirt if they werent "recruited" by that school, which means they cant have an official visit. They could also "greyshirt" a player, which is a scholarship that allows the player to enroll in the university, but not play until the following year.

They can also give players that qualify for them full academic scholarships, these dont count towards the scholarship numbers. When Miami was on probation for violating NCAA rules Butch Davis was able to add players by giving them "track scholarships". Santana Moss was actually on a track scholarship. Obviously, this isint something that the team would even suggest to a player like Justyn Ross or Patrick Surtain, but it's feasible for a 3 star prospect they like, or even a preferred walk on.
