ND football will never join the ACC

Sep 12, 2012, 6:26 PM

The only possible thing that would force their hand would be if they decided in the playoff format that ND would be ineligible unless it was conference affiliated and that will never happen. There will always be an exception for an independent ND to be eligible as long as they maintain a certain ranking. They simply are too big of a draw nationally and they will always be included and thats a fact jack. IMHO very stupid move by ACC officials. We get all the liability sports and ND makes the cash and now makes it far more likely to have a chance at one of those playoff spots. Brilliant job Swofford.

College football is changing faster than anyone can keep up with. This deal preserves options...

i myself think that is what is holding nd back..

Sep 12, 2012, 6:34 PM

they are in a wait and see to see how the play off plays out for them.if it doesnt work like they are wanting and expecting they may very well be forced to join up

Always say never

Sep 12, 2012, 6:34 PM

Thats how the saying goes right?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure what the huge downside is

Sep 12, 2012, 6:35 PM

I get that we potentially lose 1 bowl payout a season.

But other than that is there really a drastic downside to this?

Yeah, but they're not all in!

Sep 12, 2012, 6:37 PM

and you know how horrible that is.

The only reason we need Notre Dame football in the ACC

Sep 12, 2012, 6:46 PM [ in reply to I'm not sure what the huge downside is ]

Is for our television contract leverage....that is huge. ND will not join the ACC as long as it holds that leverage however. We should have never given them this deal because now ND is in a no lose situation. As long as they remain a large television draw they will remain independent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As long as ND maintains viewers they will not lose the NBC

Sep 12, 2012, 6:42 PM

deal. As long as they have the NBC deal they will remain independent. Why would they share. As long as ND has the viewership that they do there will always be an exception for ND in the playoff picture. If ND's viewership ever drops big time because they keep losing over the years and they do lose the NBC contract years down the road then the TV negotiating leverage of having a ND football will no longer be there. This was only a win for ND and ND only.

There is nothing in this '"addition" that improves the

ACC/ESPN TV deal. Nothing. This will be painful when the new SEC TV deals are announced in a few months.

Anyone who doesn't think that ND will use the ACC to leverage a huge new deal with NBC, is delusional.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As a football school this absolutely crushed us

Sep 12, 2012, 7:20 PM

Not only did it make the buy out fee so high we could never leave but we cant use ND in our television negotiating contracts and ND could actually steal our spot with a worse record in bowl games. I cannot express how pissed I am at this deal. I truly do not think the majority on this board realizes how badly we just got screwed.

Then again people said ND would never join ACC as a partial

Re: ND football will never join the ACC

I think many are over looking a player in this 3 piece band. NBC
NBC is just as greedy as ND and the ACC. The network wants a bigger piece of the pie also. The entire east coast is a very nice slice of the pie.
NBC is probably a bigger player at this party than is now known.
2016 will be very interesting year. The number 5 (5 ACC games) could also be prophetic. 2016=16 team full football memberships. Will mean competitve and stable ACC or $50 million penalty.
A conference making it in both money making sports and competive in both.
