Steve Spurrier rewards two reporters with a $100 cash prize

Hey, it’s an offseason Saturday. And it’s Steve Spurrier doing Steve Spurrier things. In this instance, those “Spurrier things” involved handing two reporters an envelope containing a $100 bill for answering a trivia question correctly.

Spurrier was meeting reporters today to talk about the Gamecocks’ new defensive line coach, Deke Adams (Spurrier also took a nice parting shot at former D-line coach Brad Lawing, who left for Florida). That’s when Spurrier asked those in attendance if they could name all the college football teams with 11 wins in each of the past two seasons. South Carolina, obviously, was one, along with Alabama, Oregon and Stanford.

Two reporters got the question right, so Spurrier reached into his coat pocket and pulled out two envelopes containing $100 bills and handed it to them before walking away. The two reporters looked inside to find a $100 bill.

Random, but alright then.

So he is dissing the guy that has made their team good...

over the past 3 seasons. If it wasn't for their defensive line over the past 3 seasons, SCU would be a a 6 or 7 win team with as mediocre as they are on offense and as mediocre as their defensive backs are.

Dude is bitter at anyone that tries to do something good without him being involved. Maybe he still has Gator Envy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

bitter because he has an inferiority complex, even though...

Jan 26, 2013, 4:27 PM

he has been very successful.

he must have cut a player and had extra cash around.***

Dissing Brad Lawing, can you say inferiority complex...

Jan 26, 2013, 4:25 PM

seriously, Spurrier may be a great coach, but he is an insecure child in an old man's body.

Re: Dissing Brad Lawing, can you say inferiority complex...

agree it is much easier for him to hand a reporter a hundred dollar bill than display genuine interest toward another human being.

also surprisingly, all the players on his team answered the question correctly and also recieved cash rewards.

that along with his mediocre offenses at SCU go to show...

Jan 26, 2013, 4:44 PM

all his offense was, was a gimmicky offense that only excelled because of the athletes that were on the Florida Gators.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SC offense has been good enough for SC to be a Top 10 team

Jan 26, 2013, 7:25 PM

in both major polls each of the past 2 seasons. Carolina is one of only 4 teams (Alabama, Oregon and Stanford being the other 3) to accomplish that. The offense averaged 31 points per game last season. In fact, the offense has averaged 31 points per game against clemson during the past 4 meetings between the two. I wouldn't say the offense has been great. I'd say they have been decent------- good enough to accomplish all the above. Flame away.

I'm surprised he didn't ask them who were the only college coaches to have taken their teams to back to back 11 win seasons.

He didnt diss lawing. He made the point that adams was good enough for us to not miss lawing. He said nothing bad about coach lawing.

Difference being my opinion is based on the actual context of what was said and the other opinions expressed here are based on the ridiculous dogma that everything spurrier does is bad in some way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh ok ... thanks again... All this time I thought Spurrier

Jan 26, 2013, 5:47 PM

was a classless jerk

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe not, but he will throw a player under the bus.

Jan 26, 2013, 6:08 PM [ in reply to Re: The Ol' Ball Coach - Dig or Recruiting Tactic? ]

Which is better - dissing a player or a former coach? Or, better yet, paying media writers to write positive things about him or throwing a hissy fit at a press conference?

Spurrier is a prissy, selfish, arrogant jerk!

Re: Maybe not, but he will throw a player under the bus.

Jan 26, 2013, 11:30 PM

I agree, Spurrier is a self-centered, childish, arrogant jerk, and he often exhibits a cruel and petty attitude toward those who get on his bad side. Aside from that, he has kicked our butts for 4 straight, and continues to out-coach, out-scheme, and make better game adjustments than our staff in each of those games. But that's OK, forget about that last part........I was fishing on Hartwell today and saw Dabo out for a walk on the lake.....Oh, and a little puppy was killed on the fourlane and Dabo gently took it in his arms, breathed his magical breath on it, and brought it back to life. Our coach is such a saint that we can't possibly lose to the OBC 5 straight, can we? See, I'm all in!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You seem to have taken on Spurrier's attitude.***

not going to change our mind about him... he is what he is so stop trying to make him out to be some kind of a stand up guy... unless y'all really think he is. If that's the case may God have mercy on your soul

Re: you coots coming over here trying to defend him is

I dont think he is a great standup guy. He actually did something recently that I didnt like at all that nobody will ever hear about. I rarely defend him. As a person there are some things he does that I am not crazy about. He isnt my friend though. He happens to coach the team I like and he is good at it. Thats the extent of my concern with him. In this case, though, he didnt do what yall are claiming.
