Sugar in your cornbread is unamerican
Oct 5, 2022, 5:07 PM
|
|
If you look closely, you can actually read will shipley’s lips as he runs back onto the field following the play where he was hit close to the sideline and appears to be yelling at nobody in particular.
He says “Yall nc state weanies put sugar in your cornbread! I don’t care what the back of the package says! I’m gonna crumble that stuff up and put it in my chili with jalapenos and cheese! Yall don’t know about me you sugar cornbread eatin puppies!”
If someone could provide the link to a video of this play it would be much appreciated. I thought will’s display of emotion a lot more appropriate once i realized the seriousness of the issue being discussed.
Also, anyone been having trouble with the braves bally broadcast? What’s up with that?
Thanks in advance for your help. If you put sugar in your cornbread, kindly keep off my thread. I have to go pull mine out of the oven now and crumble it in my chili.
More shipley losing his mind, dj looking like slow deshaun watson and slow patrick maholmes’ lovechild, and braves crushing mets’ spirit. Less sugar. I’m out!

I often use a cheap filler like beans to stretch the chili further, but I've never tried corn.

Corn in chilli is more unAmerican than sugar in cornbread. Corn is for vegatable beef soup. Even beans are barely legal in chilli . ?

Chili is just the liquid part from chili peppers and maybe tomatoes. Add meat and it’s con carne. Add beans and it’s con frijoles. Add both and it’s con carne y frijoles.

If you use sweet corn corn meal, the cornbread will be sweet anyway. As Lewis Grizard said "I ordered cornbread, not cake."

liked the stuff, and I never had to worry about eating it at home growing up. I found out why by chance once when a waitress in a restaurant asked if we wanted cornbread muffins with our meal. My dad politely told her no. But, after she walked away, he NOT so politely said "We were poor enough during parts of the Depression where cornbread was ALL we had to eat. I'll be dayumed if I'll ever eat it again as long as I can afford anything else."
And that was about the only reference I ever heard from him or my mom about the Great Depression. Apparently, folks who lived through that liked reliving it about as much as soldiers who had lived through war liked reliving that.

We ate it like that all the time. Add a little salt after you crumble the cornbread in the milk. Lots of people do the same with buttermilk.

I’m sure that tastes great, but what you are describing is cake, not cornbread. Real cornbread is cooked in cast iron and eaten with a slab of butter or crumbled up and eaten with milk, pinto beans…or even green bean juice. And if you had ever had it fixed by someone who knew what they were doing, it wouldn’t be remotely dry.

Gimme the "cake" version of cornbread then because regular cornbread takes a backseat to it.
Very rarely have I come across "regular" cornbread that tasted great. More times than not it's dried out. The times it's not dry, it's okay with butter.
I can't stand Cracker Barrel cornbread and was supremely disappointed to see it not sweetened eating there -- I think it may have even been the first time I hadn't had sweet cornbread haha

People don't know what real cornbread is anymore.
Oct 5, 2022, 6:15 PM

You get that crap corn meal from the stores nowadays and it ain't fittin to make a pone with. And that guy here who said his daddy lived on cornbread during the depression might ought to know that what they had back then ain't the same meal as has been sold in stores for the last 50 years.
My grandpaw owned a mill back in the '50s and I watched him grind corn a time or two. He wouldn't grind meal if the corn weren't dry enough to his standards and he ground it three or four times real slowlike so the meal wouldn't heat up and ruin the process.
They ain't no way corn goes in a mill yellow and comes out white so there's another strike against what y'all call meal these days. They bleach it or something to make it finer. You can buy that yellow meal but it ain't fit to make a pone with either.
Another strike again today's cornbread is the buttermilk you git at the stores. They say it's whole but that's a lie. We got our milk straight from the cow and my Aunt May who churned butter brought that and our buttermilk too. I was growing fur in strange places before I tasted pasteurized anything.
You take away all the good in cornbread and what you got left is something that sugar ain't gonna hurt a bit. I put a little tad in my cornbread just to remind me of how sweet that buttermilk is and to kill the taste of poison they done to the corn when they run it through the mill to quick and heated up the corn during the process.
Anybody who still knows people who lived in the country back in the 40s and 50s will tell you.
You need to stop meddling in stuff you don't know nothing about. You just grew up eating city cornbread and have no memory of good cornbread cause you lack the correct frame of reference.
Now don't start in on grits either. I ain't had no good grits in 60 years.

adding something to replace the flavor grinding too fast took away. Coffee suffers the same fate. Dried beans too. They dry them with heat lamps or something then wash them and speed dry them again then wash them again...sometimes the beans are washed and dried three times Speed drying seals moisture in the center of the beans and prevents them from absorbing the moisture which carries the salt and other seasonings into the bean.
Just don't get me started on grow lots for beef, ok?

Often incorrectly called "whole cake bread."
You could cook it on a hoe over an open fire, hence the name.
Both my grandmothers made it regularly.
Sometimes they would make cornbread, and if they put sugar in it "sweet cornbread."
Cornbread and hoecake bread are as different as mashed potatoes and baked potatoes.

Hoe was a slang term in 17th century England for a griddle, according to some book I read 20 years ago. I'm 76, I lived with my aunt, grandmother and grandfather from ages 2 - 9, one small field over from the "little house" my parents and brother lived in. My aunt was the cook of the family. She made two types of hoecake, both on a cast iron griddle. Sometimes on the wood stove and some times on the electric stove. One was cornbread hoecake using a batter of cornmeal, water and salt. The other was a flour based batter using self-rising flour. Both were essentially fried as there was generous portions of lard used on the griddle. Her cornbread that was baked in an iron skillet in the oven never had sugar and it was never dry either. An Uncle had a grist mill and we got our cornmeal from him back then.
Sugar in cornbread makes a sweet dessert type of bread, but it ain't cornbread.

Cornbread and hoecake are totally different. Hoecake is basically a large biscuit. Made with flour not corn meal.
