What even is college football anymore?

Universities are dumping millions into one program each year and then additional millions on a coach.
Colleges are BUYING their head coach's former homes (notice how homes is plural) for over market value.
GIVING one man a 6 million dollar house in LA.
Flying him and his family on a private jet then handing the keys to his wife.
Putting them and their family in a Mercedes van to leave the airport.
Moving or attempting to move the whole staff with them (this has been going on for awhile)
Thanks to the transfer portal the players can go with the coaches as well.
Now other coaches are poaching other coaches to get the recruits that the poached coach was going to get.
Coaches are giving the athletic departments 24 hour notice before the season is even over that they are leaving.
It's the wild west out here.

But I enjoy staying home and watching games a lot more now. I do miss tailgating with people I don't see often. And I would feel different if I still lived in Greenville. I used to be militant about making every game.
But to go to a game from Charleston, you have to fight the BS I-26 traffic on Friday (which is even worse if UofSC has a game). Then stay with the in-laws and play the "what time are we gonna leave in the morning" chess match with my wife. Then do the traffic battle again on Sunday. And the weekend's gone.
EDIT: And while being in the stands is a great experience during the game, I don't miss having to stand up and let that old guy #### again for the 12th time or let out the family of little imp children who can't sit still during the game. I don't like going to get pepperoni pizza during the 2nd quarter only to find out they ran out and someone didn't have the foresight to realize a lot more ####### people in Death Valley wanted pepperoni. Or having to wait in line for a urinal while watching some former frat star scurry into the exit door because his daddy still tells him rules don't apply to him.
It's nice to watch GameDay at home with my coffee, go through a slate of games with my neighborhood friends in garages, save some money, and climb into my own bed that night. Or pass out on the couch.
Granted, watching all that stuff still contributes to the money that's rolling in.

Because I think we just played for a National Championship 4 of the last 7 years? Sure it was early, but we lost to the current #1 ranked team in the country with NO offense by 7 points. Imagine if we had any offense this season.
We prob have a 50-60% chance of going back to the playoff next year, right?

I just don't see us getting the quantity of talent we have in the past - enough to win the ACC, yes.
And, you really need to be lucky - win all the close games, or like UGa this year, have a great team when there is not a powerhouse offensive team like we had against us the last two years.

We were averaging top 10 recruiting classes, not top 2 or 3. That's why we were always the underdog. We are actually the most talented now as we have ever been and it was our worst season in a while....I say mainly b/c of one critical position. That position could possibly be replaced next year... There's still a lot of talent on the team and we are around #10 for the next recruiting cycle.

It's more the whole scene. Football became too important to me (I go back long before Clemson became a powerhouse). I took a step back, and decided to do more of other things I enjoyed on the weekend.

Dec 1, 2021, 8:53 AM

the fans are fleeing the money. Never been a fan of pro sports. Just something less authentic, less noble, less pure about someone playing football for a paycheck, verses for fun. There is no team loyalty among players (personnel as they're called in the pros), and there is no consistency in the "personnel". Heck, even the city, the teams change cities chasing more $$$. Just not enjoyable. So you have college sports. And among them football is/was still pure. Kids were not paid, only got a scholarship. MOST played the game for an education, some for a chance at a paycheck. But here comes ESPN, endorsements, and it's just ruining college football. The fans are not the same either. At one time, the guy paying $10 for a ticket to a HS football game to watch his team, or his kid play today, was once an IPTAY member, donating $10 or $100 a year, and paying maybe $100 for season tickets. A local farmer could be a Clemson football fan. Not anymore. Only local lawyers, pharmacists, contractors, etc. can watch the games now. Different fans than when I was a kid, even at Clemson. I predict high school sports will become more and more popular, and then the money will probably flow there and ruin it eventually.
I know my own little old tiny private high school....they recruit athletes now. Bring them from across the state. I assume they're given scholarships, have no clue. But that 5-star athlete can then rack up Playstation stats playing the other tiny private schools, boosting their recruiting stats, and bringing in national TV with that money as well. My tiny private high school had 2 of the states top 5 football players? What are the odds? Zilch. And the team won games, mopped the floor with the Ben Lippen's and Cardinal Newman's of the world. They had the state's best basketball player at one time as well. ANYWAY, the scholarship they gave (assuming) is MORE than paid off when ESPN comes to nationally televise a game. Not to mention the perks tossed about from the college recruiters. Then the name recognition, it's a HUGE ROI for the tiny private school.
Then you have NASCAR. They sold out long ago too. Lost their roots. Know many NASCAR fans who go to dirt track races now, and no longer go to Darlington, Rockingham (wait, that race was canned), but anyway, they have left the sport because the sport left them for the money.
Just the trend for a long time now.

Usually it’s a cupcake game that nobody else wants to attend.
I don’t wanna pay $500+ per ticket to the notre dame game.
I’ve got friends and family with hood tailgate spots and will stop and visit them.
The overall landscape has definitely shifted dramatically outside and inside of Clemson.
I’m okay with buying coaches, at least that’s pretty transparent. The NIL might be sort of helping with the back room dealings of having players being “paid”

bridge too far.
I appreciate Dabo's perspective that coaches had to earn their salary from previous years of hustle as players and assistants...but you can't convince me there is a single coach out there that has earned an eight-figure buy-out, much less their salary while they suck. Letting kids collect some cash for their effort seems tame by comparison.

I think the portal, NIL, and rules changes is going to make the game more brittle. We'll still be at the top, but the days of dynasties are over.
Talent is going to be spread out much more equally now. Parity like we've never seen. Talented kids will go where they can play and be recognized for $$$, wherever that is. No good player is going to settle for sitting on the bench at any school.
So there will be a LOT of great teams, but none with any depth. Injuries become way more important. And NC winners will be very talented, very thin on depth, and very lucky to make it through the whole season with their stars uninjured.
We've come a long way from Bama stacking 3 starting teams on their bench like in the 60's and 70's.
