My unbiased (trying to be) top 10 (Bama at 5)

Nov 3, 2019, 12:18 PM

1. LSU --------------0 losses
2. Ohio State -------0 losses
3. Penn State-------0 losses
4. Clemson----------0 losses
5. Alabama----------0 losses
6. Baylor------------0 losses
7. Minnesota--------0 losses
8. Oregon-----------1 loss
9. UGA---------------1 loss
10. Utah--------------1 loss

This is based on what they have done THIS YEAR. Not based on what they have been doing the last few years, nor based on people think they would probably do. I have no reason other than hype to think that Bama would beat Penn State. I have no reason to say UGA would beat Baylor, other than conference hype. What have they actually done?

Tell me why I'm wrong.

Minnesota has had a great season so far, but I don’t believe the are better than some one loss teams. Of the conference teams they have played, only Illinois has a winning record at 5-4. I think they are overvalued a bit.

Concerning PSU. Iowa has beaten only one team with a winning record and the was Iowa State at their place (18-17). While a win, not a great confidence builder towards the talent of the Hawkeyes. That leaves Michigan who I have no confidence in. They have been good and bad. It’s a good win for PSU, but not enough to rank them above the Tigers for me.

I don't think they will be there long.

Nov 3, 2019, 12:28 PM

But at this point, I don't have a good argument for the other undefeateds having earned their spot.

I like Clemson's chances against Penn St, but that's just random guesswork based on no good evidence.

We’ve done pretty well in games against “the greatest football team in the history of college football.”
I’d say we’d have a good chance against the Penn State pumas, or cougars, or mountain lions, or whatever they are.

I think we would beat PSU by 3 or 4 scores . They're a decent team but nowhere near as good as Clemson in my estimation .
I believe tOSU is about to lay 45+ on them and erase them from contention .

I don't see Wisconsin (Ohio State's best win) being any better than Texas A&M.

I am holding out on Ohio State until they face a good team on the road.

I also expect Alabama will beat LSU. LSU's defense is vulnerable.

I don't see Wisconsin (Ohio State's best win) being any better than Texas A&M.
That's a good point. I can agree that they are pretty much equal wins. BUT look at this

OSU also has wins against...

Indiana (7-2)
Cincinnati (7-1 and ranked)
Michigan State (4-4 but all losses to ranked teams)

Look at Bama's 3 best wins after TAMU....

Duke 4-4
Tennessee 4-5
Coots 4-5

One of those is clearly better than the other. Everything else is a random guess.

The "eye test" has been thoroughly discredited.

Nov 3, 2019, 3:14 PM [ in reply to Re: My unbiased (trying to be) top 10 (Bama at 5) ]

The "what happened in the actual games test" seems vastly superior.

UGA got destroyed by Texas last year after all that talk. Bama got destroyed. People are hallucinating on a consistent basis. The eye test is magical unicorn fairy dust.

Re: The "eye test" has been thoroughly discredited.

Nov 3, 2019, 3:28 PM

We beat Bama but the stat line was pretty even besides the score which ofcourse is the most important. If you think Baylor or Minnesota is close to the same level as UGA than something is wrong with you. Yes Usuck beat them but they had many turnovers and it they just didn't show up similar to us vs UNC.

Haha, it's like people can't learn from history. People said that about UGA and Texas last year. They said that about SC this year.

I think UGA would probably beat both Baylor and Minnesota, but I know for a fact UGA isn't the best team because of their loss. Minnesota and Baylor still have yet to prove they are not. Everything else is totally worthless guesswork based on media hype.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The "eye test" has been thoroughly discredited.

Nov 3, 2019, 3:39 PM

I didn't think UGA would beat Texas last year. I bet on Texas to win. If winning was all that matters they would have a committee to pick teams it would just be whoever has the best records. Georgia will be ranked ahead of Baylor and Minnesota for sure. Idk why you keep throwing this media hype out there. I watch the games I don't just listen to the media. Maybe if Minnesota and Baylor scheduled decent oOC games they would get some respect. They will not from me unless they can beat the big boys in their conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Minnesota could beat UGA.***

A lot of these personal rankings do come with a bias. Some people hate a certain team and it pains them to say they are, or are at least perceived to be better. Someone will always say “I need to see them play [a team with a pulse], [a team with a defense], [a tough game on the road], etc. And it’s all fine to think and say these things. There are a lot of really good teams this year. Beating one doesn’t diminish the accomplishment or indicate that team was trash.

Cincinnati is actually ranked above Wisconsin from last weeks poll. aTM isn’t ranked. OSU won’t have any more tough road games, unless you think UM is going to be tough [insert perennial overrated Big10 team comment here].

The good news is that we always get to see how it plays out in the end.

Penn St belongs behind Clemson. I know you said this year, technically the natty was this year. I’m sorry but an undefeated, undisputed and defending national champion should not be jumped until beaten... Period!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it is 100% wrong to consider a previous season

Nov 3, 2019, 12:44 PM

when ranking teams for this season. If the goal is to say who is the best team this year, then logically, what happened last year is irrelevant.

I wouldn’t want to be ranked number 1, but you can’t justify “dropping spots” for winning. I’m okay with being 3rd or even 4th, But why would you take a team from a conference and place them above a recent champion when said conference wasn’t even represented by a team in the most recent playoff?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't look at it as dropping someone.

Nov 3, 2019, 1:08 PM

Clemson hasn't done anything to be punished, but we have not done as much this year to prove we are the best team... this year. If the polls were like a year-by-year program ranking, then I would say Clemson should still be #1. But that's not what the rankings are for.

I clear the chess board after each game. That's what they do with the rankings each week.

Remember the argument for Kelly Bryant to start over Trevor? That Kelly won games and didn't do anything to get fired? That's related to the argument to keep Clemson at the top. Clemson doesn't deserve to get dropped, it's just other teams have demonstrated more. That's not our "fault" but it's still true.

Re: I don't look at it as dropping someone.

Nov 3, 2019, 2:28 PM

We have played one close game and destroyed everybody else on our schedule. I believe we have done plenty to justify being 1. Bama, OSU, PSU, and LSU have as well tho.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: My unbiased (trying to be) top 10 (Bama at 5)

Nov 3, 2019, 12:43 PM

I don't think your list is biased, or unbiased.
I agree with you about LSU, and what they have done just THIS YEAR.
I also think Penn State could be better than Ohio State, but we will see.
Bama is always going to be ranked high, just because they are Bama.
Baylor is good , but probably won't beat Oklahoma.
Don't follow the West Coast teams enough to comment.
Then there is UGA. Won a game vs Florida they needed to win but the verdict is out on them until we see if they can beat the SEC West champ for the SEC Championship.
Then there is Clemson, and this is where I might be a bit biased.
Sure we are 9-0 and have won most of our games big. But I can also say I have added more grey hairs to my already grey hair by some of the starts we have. A lot of our first quarters have been less than stellar offensively, and we have allowed a few teams to hang close for a quarter or so.
Defensively, we might even be better than last season, only this year it's the linebackers and secondary that is better than the front four. But let's not forget who we lost last year.
Finally, Clemson is a no-win situation. We lose, and we are out. We win, and the pundits say we haven't played anyone,( but who has really).
So as long as we win, no problem. The CFP Committee can't leave out the undefeated and defending National Championships. They may seat us # 4, but we are still in.
So pick whichever top 10 teams you like. You can make arguments for, and against any of them.
P.S.)I think Oklahoma is better than Baylor, but Baylor is after all, at this moment, undefeated).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are saying you have UGA ranked ahead of Clemson?

Nov 3, 2019, 12:46 PM

I don't want to react until you confirm this.

Re: My unbiased (trying to be) top 10 (Bama at 5)

Nov 3, 2019, 1:14 PM

As far as the top 4 go. I think your list is indicative of what the media is spoon feeding the masses. All I see is your teams ahead of Clemson are producing pretty eye catching offensive numbers. Where I'm from Defense still matters and with that said. Clemson's defense is more than capable of shutting down all 3 of those offenses while our offense is on par with their offense. We are being judged by one game (UNC) and "slow" starts. Because you know if you're not scoring touchdowns on every drive in the 1st quarter then your team is terrible apparently*sarcasm*.

I'm sorry to say I feel your list is also being tainted by that one game perception, sprinkled with the "slow" starts.
My top 5:

1.LSU Whether we buy into the SEC rankings every year or not. More wins over highly ranked opponents and an exposive offense that could actually give Clemson's Defense fits places them at #1.

2.Clemson winning, improving offense. As long as Offense continues it's upward trend (as many of us knew they would) Clemson is still the team to beat. question mark will remain in the kicking game.Potter sadly lacks accuracy.

3.Oh St have a much talked about defensive player, offense looks purdy.

4.Bama with Tua there's always a chance.Until there isn't.

5.Penn St Sneakily good numbers. Can they get out of their own way and win the Big?

#6 - #10 are filled with teams waiting for the other top 5 teams to play out and losers be shown.

Good talk.

Re: My unbiased (trying to be) top 10 (Bama at 5)

Nov 3, 2019, 3:21 PM

The media is feeding us that Alabama is not in the top 4? Think you are way off there.

LSU, in every possible estimation, has the best resume so far. They are beating teams that are beating a lot of other teams. They are beating teams who have some of the best players.

My list would be the same even if we had beaten UNC 450-0. It's about the level of competition that you are beating. Our's is better than Bama's so far, but very obviously not on the same level as LSU and Ohio State so far.

Anyone with Bama in the top 4 is letting the media influence more than I am.

In what ways is Clemson body of work superior to Ohio State's? Don't talk in absolutes. Talk about relatives. Us vs Ohio State so far this year.

Nov 3, 2019, 2:22 PM

Well I have watched all these teams play except Minnesota. UGA would be a 2 TD favorite of Baylor and for good reason. If you know football and have watched both teams play you would understand why. Penn St looks pretty solid and them and Bama might would be a good game especially if PSU could get pressure on Tua which they do have a good DL. Bama still just too talented imo.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UGA was a favorite over SC. And over Texas. Yawn.

Nov 3, 2019, 3:22 PM

Show me what they did... not what "experts" feel.
(I agree Penn State is not one of the best 4 teams in the country... but my point is that is extremely unreliable.)

Re: UGA was a favorite over SC. And over Texas. Yawn.

Nov 3, 2019, 3:34 PM

Idc what the experts feel brother. I believe UGA is better at every position if comparing them to Minnesota or Baylor. The year we won it all with DW4 we lost to Pitt who we were favored against and better than. UGA has beat much better teams than Minnesota or Baylor has. The eye test they are obviously better than those 2 teams.

Based.... on..... what?

Recruiting rankings?
SEC superiority according to media?
Anything from this season that you can point to that specifically demonstrates UGA is better than those two teams?

I think it's one thing to rank the teams like that (based purely on resume)

Nov 3, 2019, 4:41 PM

but it's an entirely different thing to try to predict future results. I'm fine with you putting PSU at 3rd but I have plenty of reasons to think Clemson or Bama would beat them. Some of that is based on roster talent and previous seasons because some things do carry over (coaching and some of the players).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with you 100%. My rankings have nothing to do with

I am trying to convince people to reduce their confidence in predictions (eye test in rankings) because it leads to circular logic.
