Hot Seat

Aug 10, 2021, 12:56 PM

1. Who do you think has the hottest seat to start the year?

2. If you had to put money on a coach that doesn't make it to the end of the season, who would it be?

Excuse me for trying to spark a discussion.

Jeff Scott at #17? David Cutcliffe at #20?

Aug 10, 2021, 2:27 PM

Jeff Scott hasn't even had time to unpack all his boxes. I don't know why Cutcliffe is on the this list. What are the expectations at Duke?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not very high for football. Without looking it up, Coach

Aug 10, 2021, 2:32 PM

Cut has to be one of the winningest coaches in Duke football history. He will most likely leave on his own terms.

Exactly, therefore, I have no idea why he would be on the list.

My top three...

Aug 10, 2021, 1:46 PM

1 - Harbaugh at Michigan
2 - Fuente at Virginia Tech
3 - Frost at Nebraska

Frost

Aug 10, 2021, 1:50 PM

don't you think he gets a couple more years ???

I mean does Nebraska really think they ever have a shot at being relevant again ???????

If they switch from Corn to growing weed in that state; I could justify some un realistic exceptions

I have a hard time seeing Nebraska being relevant ..... in football ..... in the future .....

A few things...

Aug 10, 2021, 2:44 PM [ in reply to Frost ]

1 - Frost is a alum and a former star QB, so he is going to get the benefit of the doubt when others may not.

2 - He is a paltry 12-20 in three seasons as Nebraska's head coach.

3 - The AD who hired him just retired and Nebraska is looking for a new AD.

4 - He was on the hot seat last year too just after signing a contract extension in 2019. The new contract runs through 2026 and includes buyout of $5 million per remaining year. The last two years, the buyout drops to $2.5 million per year. So, if they fired him after the 2021 season, the total buyout would be roughly $20 million.

5 - It’s been an ugly start for Frost but he came to Nebraska with the understanding it would be a long rebuilding process.

6 - Frost took UCF from 0-12 in 2015 to 6-7 in 2016 and then 13-0 in 2017. Of course, that's UCF and they don't play in the B1G.

Ultimately the consensus seems to be that unless he shows marked improvement this year (7 or 8 wins and a bowl invite), he probably a goner assuming Nebraska can afford the buyout. Nebraska is NOT going to win 7 or 8 game in 2021. They play Oklahoma, Michigan State, Northwestern, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Iowa all of which are likely losses.

I would like to acknowledge all the info

Aug 10, 2021, 6:44 PM

you put in that post.

some f it I know ---- I think he gets an extra year or two or three

However - what kids are dying to goto Nebraska ?

I guess they think they should be relevant ---- I am not sure on this .....

They better find some DONORS who are willing to PAY $$$$$$$$$$$ a lot in NIL to get 5 star recruits . .....

Nebraska is similar to uof6c...

Aug 10, 2021, 4:49 PM

in that they'd rather be a conference doormat and continue to collect large revenue payments from the league each year than move to a conference like the AAC or Conference USA where they'd be a bit more competitive but make much less money.

We’re relevant again

That was looking like it was never gonna happen for quite some time. I don’t see why Nebraska can’t as well.

Nebraska can't be relative again because football isn't played in a phone booth anymore! Translation: when it was all about the Power I - Nebraska I - Option - they were relevant.
They can still recruit OL pretty well; but they aren't getting all the best anymore. They aren't getting the type of skill players in enough depth to really run the spread either.
Who wants to go to Lincoln, Nebraska?(J/K I have never been but it actually looks like it would be a pretty cool place).

When everything was smash mouth they ruled "late"! Army, Michigan, Alabama ruled during this time as well. Clemson and Georgia were some others who got in there.
They started having to change when Tom Osborne left! I wonder honestly; if Osborne had it in him; if he couldn't come back, teach that Nebraska version of the I-formation; and make them a powerhouse again.

Nobody every just "stopped them"! Mind you this was when you would have big LB who were purposefully big in order to stop the run game between the tackles. They would hang as many points on people as Oregon was doing at their Zenith. They use to beat teams: 77-7 and 70-10 and 63 -0. That many points and not running up tempo.

If football ever goes back to that style - they may have a chance. But, the best WR's won't likely head there over a Clemson, Bama, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Florida, LSU, etc. They seem also to only attract QB's who are more "past offense types"! Meaning - they would have been good option QB's.

Just don't see it happening for them until then. Unless a Chip Kelly goes there and takes 3 star players people have overlooked who can play and put them behind a dominant OL. Maybe they get better. **C. Kelly issue at UCLA is he can't get the OL right or the defense.

When I started this discussion the two names that were in my head were Fuente and Harbaugh. The Virginia Tech program just seems dead and flat. Maybe they can turn it around this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know...

Aug 10, 2021, 2:45 PM

a lot of their players left the program again this past off-season.

I think Harbaugh has to be #1.

Aug 10, 2021, 2:12 PM

He's had plenty of time at Michigan to turn things around, and morale seems to be low among their fans.

I'm shocked he still has a job there, given their history and expectations.

Judge Keller, I too am somewhat surprised he still has a job there as well. Especially given their recent history with Ohio State. Over the last 15-years Michigan has been completely dominated in that series.

Desperate for attention, one of them will do something within the course of the year to warrant an invite to leave.

Re: Hot Seat

Aug 10, 2021, 7:30 PM

Who gets fired 1st? Clay Helton < - - - - - - - easy money it's going to be him. He gets the best athletes who don't go east on the west coast! He has a top flight offensive system in place; Oregon isn't the Chip Kelly Oregon anymore. Stanford has taken a few steps back. The Zona schools keep teasing at being good but not quite getting there. The Pac 12 as a whole is bad and yet - Southern Cal isn't dominating!

Most pressure to win now! Mike Leach and Scott Frost tie in my opinion!

Mississippi St. is likely not going to be very patient with such a finesse offense; especially because having suitable athletes to run the Air Raid won't be a problem for the Bulldogs.

Scott Frost is living in the shadows of what Tom Osborne accomplished in Cornhusker land. He isn't fired too quick; much like Harbaugh because he is an alum. But, the Cornhuskers want the glory days back - "NOW"!
