My thoughts on West Virginia…

Jul 27, 2021, 5:08 PM

Full disclosure both sides of my family and my wife’s family have West Virginia roots.

I don’t get why “academics” followed by the compulsory comparison to the “blue bloods” of Duke and North Carolina come into play. Ever since anyone with a pulse allowed UNCheat to get away with the worst academic scandal in NCAA history for decades and in spite of recorded FBI tapes with Duke and their basketball recruiting prowess?
What does it really matter if we let a state supported land grant university that hasn’t forgotten that it was established for the citizens of their state and therefore suffered a fall in rankings of elitist college publications?
As far as their fans, they don’t hold a candle to Georgia.

i think a lot of it has to do with that thumping they put on

ACC footprint. WVU is just another warm body in the ACC. We have enough of those schools already in the ACC. Money is what driving these expansions. WVU has no real value. It's ND or burst.

Look at Cincinnati NFL and Major League Baseball in state Huge football interest look at OSU This state offers much to ACC footprint Same for Texas The state of WV offers none of this

WVU is credited with the design of the modern toothbrush.

Note: If it had been invented elsewhere it would be called the teethbrush.

Hey, allweather - normally most folks normally make sure that both sides of the family are not from west virginia ;)

Don't get me wrong, my wife's family is from far-southwest Virginia. Next hill over is West Virginia. Still Virginia and being from the tidewater/piedmont side of the state made me tax collector.....and why state vehicles do NOT have state plates on them.

UNC is beyond disgraceful. But they aren't Bluebloods anymore. Even state folks snicker at them. Duke is still fairly clean. I mean if you want to see vile, go look at Louisville. Heck even WVU was put on probation a few years ago for basketball. Some folks mention Baylor like they weren't literally acting as pimps. Or try any locker room in the B10. Anything else in the ACC is minor compared to some other schools - UNC excluded. I mean we know that SEC is crooked as heck and they keep beating Ol Miss with violations. We know that Auburn is a mess.

Next, what about Wake? What about GT? For the most part, we do have higher standards. Even FSU is at least trying to kinda clean themselves up and VT too. I know the ACC isn't perfect but they are a major upgrade over anyone else.

I don't see how the 'elitist college publications' have anything to do with this discussion beyond identifying schools that clearly lag behind 3rd choice regional frat collectives.

SEC has alway operated in a crooked and fraudulent manner Athletics drives most of these schools The ACC is a cut above So are most of the other conferences SEC schools for the most part are operated athletically by a few Big bankers

WV would be a fun road trip... Also, I've been on the SC coast for a week and have seen a ton of WV stickers, hats, fans around. I know they don't have a great media market but they could add some excitement that Wake, Duke, BC don't offer and that recent additions Miami, Louisville, and VT have failed to provide.

I think they qualify as a “ football first” mind set. That’s all you can ask. Also I enjoy the mountaineer and his long gun. (Heard too much of it at the OB tho)

I don’t see how adding WV gives us anything

Jul 27, 2021, 9:35 PM

It’s just going to split our conference pie smaller without adding negotiation leverage

It was a mistake to not get West Virginia the last go round

Jul 28, 2021, 11:34 AM

They offer exactly what this conference is missing from a lot of teams. They have a rabid fanbase, they fill their stadium, they travel, and they would bring in an inventory of games that are very meaningful to the television.

West Virginia vs Pitt, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Virginia

New rivalries would easily form with Clemson, NC State, North Carolina, Florida State. This is a school that needs to be added to the league.

That's the bottom line when it comes to conferences...***

All of that may be true, but it doesn’t make the ACC is next TV contract any bigger. It doesn’t provide bigger ball games for TV viewing. It doesn’t drive ratings. It doesn’t make more money. Adding West Virginia would be stupid. It doesn’t benefit the ACC and doesn’t benefit Clemson.

It’s astonishing to me the way you folks don’t understand and get what this is about. It’s not about what will interest you for matchups. It’s about leverage and TV audiences and negotiating power. It’s about money!

we are not getting Notre Dame. I've even said that if we get Notre Dame, we still might not want to get WVU. Why split the money 16 ways when you can get ND and split it 15. I was answering him in regards to not getting West Virginia the last go round when we got Syracuse, BC, etc.

West Virginia would have been another state for the carriage fees, although not as populated as NY, MAss or PA. However, they bring passion and intensity, which is something that made the SEC great.

I fully understand carriage fees, expanding to new markets in the last round and this time that has given way to fanbase and streaming and interest in the team.

Before you get on here and insult people, understand the context and work on your reading comprehension.

interesting matchups have to be there also. ThAt is what made the SEC great to begin with. Why do you think you are the only one that understands the market just because other people want to balance the market need with a good team and fanbase. If we just go with your line, let's just add Temple, Univ. of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Columbia and be done with it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Best thing for WVU

Jul 28, 2021, 11:44 AM

is to stay put and hope the Big 12 can add two more teams, maybe CFU and Cinci. ND does not need the ACC for football in the era of NIL and a 12 team playoff. And why in the heck would PSU leave $50MM per year for $32 in the ACC. ACC needs to just circle their wagons for a while, and figure out a merger with the Big, before the PAC 12 does.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't forget what the ACC did last time

Jul 28, 2021, 11:45 AM

Remember, West Virginia just 9 years ago got SPURNED by the ACC. We left them scrambling to find a home, which they "settled" on with the BIG12.

I'm not sure they'd have a choice if we offered them again, but still, they're pissed. If another league with a vastly better TV deal offers them first, I can't see any legitimate reason why they'd not take it other than logistics (& that's not a good enough reason).

WVU doesn't add nearly enough-----that's unfortunately why the ACC turned them down the first time.
