My thoughts on football recruiting

May 28, 2021, 5:56 PM

Because Dabo, and his staff do three things most other schools don’t... first, we don’t offer any high school sophomores, second, we are not influenced by ratings., and third, we check the recruit out as far as attitude is concerned. As a rule, we make 50+/- offers a year. The next closest school makes 100, and some make as much as 200+. So, saying you have a Clemson offer is prestigious. I am starting to believe that there are some recruits out there, who have already made up their mind where they are going, show interest in Clemson, and visit, just so they can say they got a Clemson offer. That being said, I no longer get excited when I read that “Clemson makes top five.” The top five are usually Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida, Oklahoma, etc.

Is this wrong?

You are correct in my opinion. Clemson recruits talent and character. You must have both. I know in my hometown, they recruited 2 guys heavily and after the interviews, they only offered one. The other drives a truck now. Nothing wrong with truckers at all. Just shows you how important character is in this world today. They know what they are doing.

No, I think you are right. BECAUSE a Clemson offer is not

May 28, 2021, 6:13 PM

easy to come by, I believe some recruits are starting to feign interest just to get one, as they either already have an inflated opinion of themselves, or they believe that offer will, in itself make them higher profile to other schools. They would be correct in that regard.

That is why Dabo always likes to meet recruits face to face before possibly extending an offer. Much harder to hide one's true personality in a one on one discussion. Dabo has a pretty good track record of getting high character guys. His method works.

I do agree that I don't really pay attention to anything a recruit says until we are in the top 2-3. Anything beyond thats pretty meaningless. Being top 3 is as well but I still get excited to hear its down to us and one other school. Just can't help it.

It is true that over the last few years we did not win the 247 recruiting medal. No matter as some excellent players have signed on and walked on. It is a testament to Dabo and the coaching staff that we fear no one. The character of the Tiger program has no equal.

You are mostly correct. The numbers need slight adjustment Normally Clemson will make around 100 offers, we are at 64 confirmed offers for 2022 right now. Very few schools will be less than 200, lots of schools will be 300+, even up to 400. The closest P5 or G5 that I saw for 2022 was USF at 95, but that should be self explanatory, Coach Jeff Scott.

But then you have only a couple in the 100+ range, with OhSt being 117 but they get most of who they really want. Surprising that NCST and UNC only barely over 100. Interestingly, smaller conference schools often don't make a lot of offers, likely because they have small recruiting budgets, Georgia Southern has only made 54 offers. I'm sure these schools have to focus on recruits with high interest and spend "Officials" wisely with kids just taking free trips.

Then even quality football schools are over 200 offers. Bama is at 206 and Uga has 207. Almost all P5 schools with good football history are mid 200s.

But take schools that want to be good with big budgets and they throw out offers like crazy. Arkansas 336, FSu 322, Kentucky 300's, VT 300's, Maryland 300s, etc. Then you have schools with 400s like Penn St is 414 already. All of these numbers will increase as 2022 recruiting ramps up as camps start, as officials open up to recruits.

So while I agree with your post, I thought your numbers were low but I didn't want to randomly say that without looking up numbers to confirm.

I really thought the Coots would be close to 400 with coaching change and de-cootments but they are in 260s. They have plenty of time to ramp that up as early signing is still many months away. I know I looked one time last year and they were mid 300's but don't recall time of year I looked, just recall it was for 2021.

I don't think we were close to offering 100 recruits last

May 30, 2021, 11:18 AM

year.

There was a Tigernet story recently that stated Clemson offered less than 70 recruits last year. I think we offered the 2nd or 3rd lowest number of recruits for the 2021 recruiting cycle.

I think all the top schools deal with that to a degree. An athlete feigning interest to get that offer on their resume. Probably a little more of a problem for Clemson not only for minimizing offers but also they wait late to offer for most.
All in all, it works quite well.

Recruiting is a different world

May 31, 2021, 8:48 AM

I think people put far too much value on recruiting news, to your point.

Coach Saban lands a helicopter at a 3-star recruit's high school and the next day he's a 4-star.

I'm not saying there isn't some validity to recruiting rankings, but I've also never seen any top-rated class finish without some of that very class transferring out at some point, and including 5-star talent (including us).

Bottom line, recruiting is a nation-wide process now & Clemson is an elite-level program. Make no mistake, the same thing happens to Alabama & Ohio State. Each and every recruit is different & has their own story, but it certainly doesn't HURT Clemson for 5-star athletes to say they're visiting here, & of course including when they actually commit to Clemson.

To me, recruiting is like the Heisman; you can have as much fun with it as you want, but if you take it too seriously it will gut you.

Every football player that is offered by Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Oklahoma will probably have them in their top five - not very exciting to hear this any more.

I do wonder why Georgia is in this group - they really have not done anything great recently (last 10 years) and don't have a great football tradition either - must be the peaches.

I’ve been kind of thinking that some recruits are beginning to promote themselves as getting Clemson’s interest. That may be leverage to get an offer from a preferred school. Bama and OhioSt have dealing with that for longer than Clemson. However, I think it’s something that Dabo has calculated into their character filter. I bet most times teenagers do a poor job of hiding that intent of just playing Clemson coaches to attract other schools.
