My thoughts on Clemson and the transfer portal

I think a lot of why Dabo is against the portal is protection of the value of a clemson offer. We don't hand out very many offers. We take good care of our people, add them to our family, and even help in their education if they leave early for the NFL and come back. High graduation rates are important. Finishing a Tiger matters. We stick with them, and in turn expect them to stick with us. We've done this at the cost of some empty roster spots and before the portal, that was ok. A clemson offer means something because of that. We get some really good starters as a result -- because we're different. As a matter of fact, we have really had some of the highest "average star" ratings of the recruiting classes each year.

What the transfer portal has done is set a different bar -- easy come, easy go. It's the opposite of what Clemson's program was built on.

We *could* backfill the roster from the transfer portal, and the short-term benefits would be good. But it would damage the brand. It undermines some of the things that people find special about our program. I think that's why Dabo resists. We could keep the roster full, but recruiting the higher-valued players would take a hit because we would become just a little more like everybody else. "Best" wouldn't be the standard anymore.

But the drawback is what we have right now -- great starters but thin in depth. I'm sure Dabo is trying to find a way to use the portal without damage to what makes us unique. I hope he finds it before the portal forces his hand.

COPY WHAT BAMA IS DOING. Sprinkle in portal lightly and sign (and offer) more HS kids. Portal is not an ideal long-term solution....it will always be through HS recruiting (and filling in glaring gaps with portal).

Just a warning....there are more players leaving...this year. Dabo, from what I UNDERSTAND, is making changes. You can see it in the 2023 offers....however, (IMO) we are a year late. 2022 class is great...but we are being hurt a bit by not offering more earlier in cycle. We'll see if we can add equal quality to finish out class for slots 17-22.

Dabo has been correct in the way he's done it, but the situation/climate has changed. The same players you were hoping "not to offend" are the same ones saying sayonara. Not everyone is a "hit"...in fact many haven't been. I'm very confident slight changes are being made. The great CEOs, coaches, etc...are always evolving....
