My thought on baseball in general/beepers/overcoaching etc

Mar 23, 2022, 8:44 AM

Maybe I am old school but I have a huge problem with how some of these baseball coaches (Monte inculded) feel the need to over coach and try to be a big part of the ballgame.

I played at a fairly high level (no professional but great HS team and decent college). We did have freaking beepers, handsignals, charts the coaches refer too, etc.

We were good bc we loved each other as teammates but we refused to be outworked during practices. We got better during the week at practice (they were a grind) and the games were fun. Sure our coach would put a bunt on, hit and run, etc but that was just about it. We didnt use analytics for anything and sure as heck werent throwing signals all over for the next pitch. Simply put.....we busted our butts at practice, focused on fundamentals of the game, and then simply played baseball.

IMO these coaches try to become too much of a part of the game. Work them at practice then let the kids play.

Should be POTD.

Has analytics been part of the game since it was invented. Yes, to some extent. And a bunch will get on here and say it's a game of averages. That ultimately a dinger has more value yada yada. But imo there's nothing prettier than a roped double to the gap. Just an old fashioned line drive hit off a level swingplane.

Great post and it can be applied to basketball as well. Part time fans on this site jump at the first chance to blame the coach in any sport but coaching only goes so far. Does anyone really believe St. Peter's is a better team than Kentucky? The kids at St. Peter's and other non-traditional schools have talent, but what they really have is desire, heart and no pressure. Every coach in every sport sets a game plan and instructs his or her players on what to do. The coach puts the players in the position they think gives them the best chance to win but the players make the plays. Players that want to win more than their opponents often have success that nobody expects and it happens every day especially in sports like baseball and basketball.

This is on coaching, we have the talent, we’ve always had the talent to beat teams like GA State, USC Upstate, CofC, and Coastal. Yet, Monte’s teams continue to lose to mid-week teams, year after year.

Too much micro-management, over-analyzing, lack of development, and not enough looking in the mirror to see what these coaches can change about themselves. No feel for the game. This can be applied to baseball and basketball to use your words….

I know one of the pitchers and he’s been playing baseball and pitching since he was eight years old.
He’s got a great mind for the game, been taught to throw strikes, and knows when and what to throw.
The kid has put in the work.
When he’s on the mound, though, it’s hard for him to have the coaches in his ear, micromanaging him.
A lot of these pitchers are not use to this.
Trust them to get out there and throw heat.

Yes, and when got down way back then, we would fight harder than ever to get back up, and made it a game!!!

To add to my original post and what someone else mentioned.....micro managing.

We all work in various fields and how to we feel about a boss that micro manages everything we do? We are miserable to the point where working is not fun.

Why is it different for athletes/baseball players?

Totally agree. Scout the batter and pitcher for the opposition and have at it. Relief looks bad in their processes and not sure what they can do to hit a curve and the change up more consistently but we seem to fail most games if their pitcher can throw them.

Let's put Clemson baseball to the side for a minute.

Why do you think a coach giving signals, calling pitches, or letting a fielder know to move over a little because of where the batter hits the ball is "micromanaging"?

Do you assume that because a catcher in the major leagues calls all of the pitches that there are no coaches having detailed discussions with him before every game and in between every inning about how to go about calling pitches for certain hitters on the other team?

I saw that you said you played at a "great HS and decent college" but how long ago was that?

Also the definition of "decent" matters because no matter how great your high school baseball team was, high school baseball is not the same as college baseball.

Coaches becoming "too much a part of the game" is maybe the result of not wanting to put all of the pressure of memorizing every single tendency and scouting report of the other team on the players. Also maybe the catchers and pitchers aren't willing to put in the hours per day that the coaches put in preparing and learning their opponents.

You say you want to let them play, but you also want them to have to be responsible for making all of their own decisions about what pitches to throw and how to adjust for the opposing team and that sort of thing. Which is it?

Also it's not the players who get fired when the team doesn't perform, so maybe the coaches want to have a little in-game impact on their career path.

As for the electronics, that has nothing to do with the coaches trying to be controlling.

Many schools have switched to those because there is a program called Synergy that has essentially every college baseball game that is played in front of a camera loaded and available to all coaches to watch.

This program is what teams use to develop their scouting reports for upcoming opponents. It is also used by professional scouts to help them see more college players so they can be sure to choose the best prospects for their team in the draft each year.

Vanderbilt said they switched to the electronic pitch calls because it is either that or having to create elaborate pitch calling signals from the catcher to the pitcher for each pitch to prevent them from being stolen. Most college baseball stadiums have a camera in center field so stealing the signs when you can watch a video of them is quite easy for someone who has been around the game of baseball for their entire life like college baseball coaches.

I get the concept of what you are saying, but you don't seem to understand why many of these decisions are made.

It also seems like you just watch Clemson play and don't realize that this isn't just being done by a few baseball coaches but more like 99% of baseball coaches.
