Jim Phillips needs to make his mark and do this today...

Jul 22, 2021, 4:38 PM

First of all, if OU & Texas to the SEC happens-- and I believe it will-- four 16-team "Super Conferences" are likely imminent. The ACC is not going to stand pat and stick with 14 teams when the Big Ten and Pac-12 will be looking to solidify their futures, most likely through expansion. Staying at 14+1 is not an option when the SEC is going to be at 16 incredibly powerful teams.

Phillips needs to get aggressive and here's what he should do:

Simultaneously approach ND and Penn State regarding full ACC membership-- a package deal. Here's why it may very likely work:

ND has its foot halfway in the door and had an extremely positive full membership experience during Covid. It's clear to them that, while valuable, their independence is not what it once was, especially if the SEC turns into a behemoth with Texas & OU. The kicker to get ND in is two-fold: 1. Allow them to keep their NBC deal while forfeiting half of their ABC/ESPN money. 2. Tell them their joining is contingent on Penn State saying yes.

Penn State has always been an odd fit in the B1G, both geographically and from a status standpoint. They are also not a founding member of that conference, having joined in the early 90s. Yes, they have a big school, big stadium, and rich tradition, but they have no B1G rivals and they are an after-thought to Ohio State and Michigan in the B1G from a brand perspective. Penn State would be a power again in the ACC and would renew traditional rivalries with Syracuse and Pitt. And, yes, they would likely get ND on the schedule every year as well.

Now, the $25k question is money...but I don't think that would be an issue. The ACC would add two new states from a rights standpoint, not to mention ND's national appeal-- and would be able to renegotiate the terrible deal that Swoffie left us with.

This makes too much sense. I hope Phillips is putting out his feelers.

Doubt that would work. Big Ten is much more lucrative for

Jul 22, 2021, 5:16 PM

PSU or ND in football.

I would support going after WVU only as the Big 12 may crumble.

Would it be “much” more lucrative if the B1G were to lose Penn State and the ACC were to gain PSU and ND? I think that would level the financial playing field considerably.

Some for sure because of their fan bases.

The BIG is made up almost entirely of huge state schools compared to the ACC though. I don't know how smart it would be for PSU to do that.

This is a money grab with contracts for tv money coming up. It’s hard to imagine the teams below Alabama being in favor of adding more big schools that will push them down further in Football.

The only thing I disagree with is the ACC would add two states. The ACC is already in Pennsylvania.

I truly can't say I disagree with you.
I am quite sure there are a lot of calls tonight.

Wishful thinking on Penn State leaving the B1G for the ACC

Jul 22, 2021, 10:14 PM

Penn State will never get anywhere near the same TV money from the ACC as the B1G. The chasm is huge and will grow wider in the next round (starting 2025, I think). PSU is funding all of their sports and has improved facilities with the B1G windfall like never before. Penn State to the ACC is a non-starter.

What can realistically happen is the exact opposite: The B1G will poach 1 or 2 schools from the ACC. Once they flash the dollars at Louisville, they will bolt the ACC in a heartbeat. Not sure if another school would be targeted. Maybe Pitt.

Let me warn you now: I have little doubt ND will fully commit to the ACC but you won't like the terms. ND will demand an unconditional surrender on TV revenues and the ACC will grant it.

My thought exactly. Having to play Vanderbilt or Kentucky

Jul 23, 2021, 10:35 AM

or Missouri, etc, every year would not have me shaking in my boots none atall too.

I think your argument as to why Penn State would leave is

Jul 23, 2021, 10:59 AM

somewhat suspect.

Penn State is in no way a geographical oddity for the Big Ten. Maybe you could make that argument before Maryland and Rutgers, but not now. They also make more money in the Big Ten...would we bridge the gap a bit if they moved? I guess...but "Hey, jump ship...your pay cut won't be quite as bad as it looks now" is not a sales pitch. They are a fine cultural fit in the Big Ten. Maybe they aren't "midwest" but they certainly aren't "southern". They are a huge state school...that's what most of the Big Ten is.

Do you really think Penn State or Penn State's fans are lamenting the loss of Syracuse as a rival? Is that because of the 21-2 record they have against them since 1971? They had a rivalry with Pitt back when Pitt cared enough to have a stadium. I would be shocked if they valued any of that over getting to play comparably-sized schools like Ohio State and Michigan every year.

Should the ACC put out feelers? Sure...can't hurt. I just think the reasoning for Penn State being interested is weak. And hey...I'm an ACC guy...I love the way it is set-up...but it is what it is.

I think UCF makes a ton of sense for the ACC. As a member of a Power 5, they would have all the resources to become a power. I believe they already have one of the top amounts of students of any school. Geographically, it is a no brainer.
