My take so far this season

Oct 8, 2017, 9:54 AM

Well 6-0 is nice no matter how you get them.
Some wins have looked great and a couple have been a little sluggish.

It’s clear our defense is pretty tough when they are focused, especially the first group. It’s good enough to win the whole deal.

Offensively, we have shown flashes of number 1. Other times we look average so it’s really hard to gauge. Just like against Wake, we started so strong and just fizzled. I think it was more of us losing focus than Wake adjusting. It’s like the team said, yeah we got this and went on auto pilot, no fire.

I don’t have an issue with subbing players at the end but my gut says we kinda go too far with it. I hated giving up late points, again, like that.

My biggest worry is QB. Bryant has done a terrific job so far this season with his legs, calm demeanor and has shown flashes of nice touches on the deep ball. But... I think that’s where it ends. I know some of you think the coaches are getting leads and then playing to the teams strength to close it out and that’s reasonable. But... it looks more to me like they are nervous of the qb’s decision making. I think the go safe mode so soon that it screams they might be concerned. Even the times when Bryant holds the ball too long and runs backward giving up huge sacks worries me.

And even cooper yesterday looked shaky. Johnson at least looked like he had fire! I liked him more.

I still think qb is our weakest link. Not that Bryant hasn’t dont well but I just feel like the coaches are playing risk/ reward when dealing with them and are trying to keep them from beating themselves.

Lawrence coming in might unseat any current starter.

I'm assuming from your post---which I agree with---that HJ should start next Friday. Looks to these old eyes that Z and KB are not natural QB's especially when it comes to throwing the ball whereas HJ is clearly comfortable at QB and just needs more experience. I share the very same concerns you stated. Might add that HJ's pass to Cannon was a thing of beauty. Had he thrown it earlier it would have been an INT but he waited for separation and then threw it. There's a reason this kid was a 5 star and plays like that show it IMO.

YEah I think he should start but I figure Dabo will give cooper a shot too.

Cooper had his shot.

He’s not accurate enough.

I've seen wounded ducks fly better than his pass to Cain.

Our D will have to be very dominant for us to be undefeated after GT, NCST and FSU.
They play like they have so far and we will be OK but our O is putting a lot of pressure on them.

You guys say the same #### leading up to every game. "If we play the same way against VT there is no way we win" and then we dominate them. Same #### versus WF. I will tell you one thing. WE HAVE DOMINATED EVERY TEAM WE HAVE PLAYED SO FAR! Not one team has felt they were in the game at a certIn point. Auburn, knew they could not score on our defense so we killed the clock by running. Louisville, done by halftime. Virginia Tech, dons by halftime. Wake Forest, done after two drives. This team has talent and the coaches know how to prepare. We will dominate Syr, GT, NCST and FLST. We will dominate whoever is in ACC Championship. We will be s serious contender for the natty.

+1 It really is amazing that after 3 years of Tony and Jeff in control of the offense that they haven't figured this out.

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

You’re right, every game..

Oct 8, 2017, 12:26 PM [ in reply to Re: My take so far this season ]

was pretty clearly over by halftime, or at least by early in the 4th quarter. We’re getting ready to face some opponents that will require us to perform for 60 minutes without long lapses of stagnant offense. Can KB perform at peak late in the 4th quarter? Is he capable of a “game on the line” drive against bama with 2:14 left on the clock in the 4th quarter?
I’m not sure. I AM sure that a gimpy KB ain’t gonna be capable of doing that. So if he is the man you want in there at crunch time, you better be sure he’s 100% when we go up against GT.
For that reason, and based on what I saw yesterday, if I were Dabo, Hunter Johnson is my starter at Syracuse, with KB staying on the bench unless he is needed to avoid a loss. Zerrick Cooper is not a QB at this level - at least not yet. He’s not ready (just like KB wasn’t ready last year).

Good post. I think Hunter Johnson is going to play Friday (short week & following bye), so no reason to risk KB. I have a hunch HJ is going to play great and we are going to have a two week qb discussion on this board

Very good info being discussed. I think the staff has to make a decision which road they want the offense to take. I am not trying to create a QB controversy, but I think it is time for them to take a very serious look at H J. As fans we will have to trust the decisions that they make.

I would tend to agree with you however this has been the Tigers MO for several years now under SCElliott even with DW.

Tell me if you have seen this before. Offense starts with great tempo and gets up by 2 scores then disappears for a quarter and a half. Turns the ball over 2 or 3 times as well. Defense holds and holds until it cannot anymore and gives up TDs to make a game closer than it should be while not creating a turnover.

Hard to complain as we have been successful, but it is our MO for 80% of our games.

You know what else is our ammo. Going to the natty! Only losing 1 game in a season! Winning championships!

Trust in Dabo ..... and playing 2nd/3rd string

Oct 8, 2017, 10:26 AM

Hunter may start next Friday and give KB 3 weeks to heal ...

Subbing players during garbage time
Last season is why we are so good right now .... Any playing time one of next seasons potential starters can get now makes a HUGE difference when it comes to the first play , first game of next season ...

Count the snaps .... would you prefer a first time starter to have taken 20/30/40 snaps by opening day, or 0..... its worth giving up points in garbage time ...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But by using subs, I cant brag at work about Clemson being #1 in Sept / Oct AP polls

Ditto ^^^ THIS!! ^^^

Oct 8, 2017, 10:39 AM [ in reply to Trust in Dabo ..... and playing 2nd/3rd string ]

I’d MUCH RATHER see Simmons, Wallace, et. al., blow coverages... or Cooper panic/choke(?) on a pass to a wide open receiver when up by 2+ scores vs the BCs and Wakes... NOT in crucial games. And other than some good runs, Bryant (‘mostly’) stunk it up during limited PT last year.... and now? He’s lead the team to 6-0, including W’s over Auburn, Louisville and VT....

GO TIGERS!!!

I have no idea why it has to be repeated five or six times a day.

Re: My take so far this season

I agree with most of whats been posted. However, I have absolutely no problem with giving up points in garbage time. It gets the young players valuable playing time. It puts them on film and coaches can teach from that. Something you can't get from practice sessions, especially once the season starts. Like many of you, Dabo's investment in the future is a key to our success. A lot easier for 'next man up' if they've had quality playing time.

The committee understands the difference between game points and garbage time points. Also, we need to face it, we won't jump bamer until they lose, unless of course it's a quality loss. As long as we are top four at the end of the season, it matters not.

My only concern is penalties, 9 - 79 yds. Coach will fix that.

Re: My take so far this season

Oct 8, 2017, 10:50 AM

Guys we are 6-0! KB has got the job done against Auburn, Louisville, and Virginia Tech. Two of those were very hostile away games! I'm behind him 100% what else does he need to prove? I'll say it one more time.... we are 6-0 lol

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There are two other factors you are leaving out.

Oct 8, 2017, 12:34 PM

The more time a kid spends on the field the higher the chance he gets an injury.

I'm not sure Dabo wants to run the score up on weaker teams. I believe this because he once said, 'No one is going to pad their stats,' while addressing the questioning of pulling Spiller early against Coastal Carolina. I think it was CC, maybe it was another D2 team.

So yeah, I think this season is going just as planned.

Re: My take so far this season

Oct 8, 2017, 12:34 PM

Why Cooper is 2nd string ahead of Hunter Johnson will remain a mystery to me. I get nervous every time Cooper passes the ball. Thankfully, KB2 is better this year at passing, but HJ is still better IMO.

Oh well - let's trudge along and let those that get to watch every practice do their THANG. It seems to work just fine.

You could have made this exact post in 2015 or 2016.
