I feel that ESPN is only willing to pay big money for 4 major conferences as they have shown over the last year. As of right now we are on the outside of this looking in. Nothing that they've said about this makes any sense at all. They say expansion is about TV sets. Who has more TV sets than the acc. Seriously? Atlanta, new York, Boston, DC, who can match that? Nobody. Performance? I know we have had a bad run lately, but other than the sec, what other conference sets the world on fire. The big 10 was absolutely horrible this year, they have Ohio st and then everybody else. We had 2 teams finished higher than the highest ranked big 12 team. 3 if you go ahead and count Louisville. Pac 12 honestly has 3 teams and that's it, ever. Usc, Oregon, and sometimes Stanford. Within the next 3 years the acc will once again be considered a football power. Clemson and fsu aren't going away. Miami, Unc, vatech will improve. The addition of Louisville is huge. If these teams can find away to stick together and fight off the expansion efforts by others we will be fine. If the acc stays together the other conferences will have no choice but to turn their expansion efforts west. The big12 would again be the one under attack. Also in order for the Pac to expand, well let's face it, they only have one way to go anyway. I think the Grant of rights hurts us in contract negotiations. Why give a lot of money to a conference that can't guarantee who will be there a year from now.
Big 12 is in bad shape. The question is how solid is

the grant of rights? PAC 12 and sec would be splitting up the desirables already otherwise. No league is stable when one team lords power over the others. At least in the ACC, it's a pair of teams, and they keep the money equal.
The question still remains how the sec and b1g get off of 14 teams to a better number. The sec is obviously desirable to any team (as long as your athlete-students can be treated as machines), but there is little upside to b1g for a southern team. They want to expand to the south to get a recruiting edge there. It does no southern team a favor to have northern ties. Most kids and families will happily go to the south. The weather is better, there's less traffic, and the economies have more upside.
The real problem is the support in the north is with pro teams. The cities you list and most ACC venues also have pro teams. It weakens the product somewhat.
