My Pre-Game Notre Dame Scouting Report...

Dec 11, 2018, 2:24 PM

@quozzel Bat Signal! "Where are you?" We need your lovely brainfarts... ;)

It's a humble request of this Tiger to get some fun analytical breakdown from a TNET great (like Quizzel, among others) about the upcoming Notre Dame v Clemson game:

In the past few days of lull I've watched the games between the Dames of Notre and the ROY...

My takeaways: (warning long post, but Visual Aids* @ the bottom!)

-Book can sling it. Nice tight pretty spiral on some of his passes.
Ian Book, QB: The junior has thrown for 2,468 yards this year. He is completing 70.4 percent of his passes. He has 19 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He is averaging 8.8 yards per attempt and has an efficiency rating of 162.5.

-Their running game has been easily stopped this season. (Reference, USC game)
Dexter Williams, RB: Williams is averaging 117.6 yards a game on the ground. Though he has played in just eight games, he has rushed for 941 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He is averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

-Me FINKE he's Good... Chris Finke, "Their version of Hunter Renfrow", as he's been called on many platforms, ESPN, Other sites, etc... IS GOOOD. This kid has hands for days. Not only is he a former walk-on slot receiver like our beloved H.R., this kid pulls in crazy catches as a go to 3rd down receiver. He's also a punt return threat. (Reference, Mich & USC double coverage 50-50 ball, TDs, Punt Return WF game)
"Chris Finke, WR: He is Notre Dame’s version of Hunter Renfrow. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound wide receiver walked on at Notre Dame and earned a scholarship by the beginning of his sophomore year. He is third on the team with 47 receptions for 547 yards and two touchdowns. Like Renfrow, he lines up in the slot and is Book’s go-to guy on critical third down plays. He is averaging 11.7 yards per catch."

-Book can move well like TL16, and throw on the move (Reference, USC extending plays)

-The Irish Secondary has had either some hell of some luck popping balls out for a fumble, or THEY ARE DARN GOOD as punching balls out during yards after contact. I'm saying it's probably a little bit of both (Reference, USC game, most of those were all on the receivers*, #### good plays those from ND)

-The Syracuse Game is a moot point. Cuse' is W/0 their workhorse, Dungey.... Hard to get any read here. ND dominated. Dino did not coach well.

-They DO have a good DL... but We train day in/day out with the BEST.

Jerry Tillery, DT: The All-American had 8 sacks.
Julian Okwara, DE: 7 sacks and 21 quarterback hurries
Khalid Kareem, DE: second on the team in quarterback hurries (8) and third in tackles for loss (10.0).

-On our Shared Opponents we have dominated the opposition on those days, while (in some cases) they just squirrelled away another win... Just the #FACTS ma'am...

Wake Forest 27 - ND 56
Pitt 14 - ND 19
Florida St 13 - ND 42
----

-Almost lost to Vandy*
Van 17 - ND 22

- ND Defenses have given up significant yardage on out routes, jet sweeps and on quick first down conversion passes.

My final observations:
--Tip of the hat to ND--
ND has some playmakers, Book and his handful of receivers make some plays, their OLine has a decent pass protect, their Defense can force turnovers.

--Not that impressed--
As Dabo says, "It's not easy to win, let alone be undefeated..." so for that ND deserves to be in the mix for the playoff, but after watching these wins for myself, I'm just not that impressed... I've attached the links below to some of their closer games, or even some of the similar opponents that we've both faced. I've not included the Syracuse game, b/c it was a wash without Dungey.

--ND will be ready to play--
I think ND has some quality playmakers in Book, Finke and Boykin, but even with their extra preparation time (cough cough, no conference championship) it won't add up to a win over a prepared Clemson team. Can Clemson lose? Yes, if we don't show up ready to do business, but not likely. Many of the playmakers on this Clemson team have something to prove... many forgoed playing in the NFL right now to capture more moments like this.

It's a good time to be a Tiger...

Let me know Whatch-Y'all-Think!

FSU v ND-
(Boykin*, Book doesn't start, Defense Takeaways from poor FSU play, Brandon Wimbush is good - more of a rusher, Porous DLine for FSU, BAD FSU Line... but Akers still runs TDs on ND)

USC v ND -
(USC could of won this game, but they let it get away with turnovers, FINKE* great plays, USC defense gives up after a good first half, Book makes rookie passing mistakes INT*, USC loses contain the whole 2nd half)

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Ok, I'm agreeing with you, but with a couple of caveats. In all honesty, my beloved team has seemed inconsistent this year, and watching the crazed boastings of any number of our fringe supporters on this link, I sense a cautionary light coming on in me that I really don't like. This is not a comfortable game for me. I hope that I'm wrong. However, I think that we have the best QB and RB in the country, and our OL seems to have gotten progressively better. My only question mark remains our defensive secondary. We'll see.

Well... the one game that sticks out is UCSjr. - So ESPN would definitely agree with your point, and that is where we have the least depth. We will see. Brent V will have them ready in my opinion.

ND will or won't be exposed. Let 'em play

Great post. Could have been better if you would have put some thought behind it. ; )
