The supposed oppression we faced as Americans is nothing compared to what a true authoritarian state does. It's almost as if a balanced approach - somewhere between forcibly locking everyone inside their homes and pretending there is no coronavirus - is the right way to go.

I appreciate Murcielago's perspective, and I agree that there's a huge difference between our response in the U.S. and the extreme measures taken in Chiner. While I don't think we're in any danger of becoming an authoritarian state of that degree anytime soon, I think it's foolish not to be wary of incremental encroachments on our freedoms and suspicious of big government power and control. For the record, I had no problem masking up when covid was spreading like wildfire, and getting fully vaxxed to protect myself and others. I'm all about balancing my freedom with the rights and welfare of others.
