I thought my hearing was starting to go from too many loud Clemson football games

I can’t hear Mrs ALLweatherfan and have to ask her to repeat herself umpteen times a day. I was thinking I needed hearing aids like my brothers who are of an advanced age. Then it dawned on my that when Mrs ALLweatherfan is talking on the phone, to someone else, I can hear her perfectly from 2 rooms away.
And that’s when the fight started.

In my mid forties here. I've been wearing hearing aids since I was 6. My mom always claim that I hear what I want to hear.

I'm well over 70 now and need my aids. My wife said I can't hear her any better now than I could 50 yrs ago........looks like she would take the hint?

The volume my wife uses when on the phone is directly proportional to the distance away the person on the other end of the call is. She has always been that way even before cell phones and I have always laughed about it.

Just like our sense of smell will adapt/ignore strong odors shortly after initial exposure, the sense of hearing adapts by turning off extraneous and purposeless racket. It's a conditioned response back to our days as hunter-gatherers. "You're going out to hunt mastodon again! You're never around! There's so much to do around here! You haven't even started the petroglyph from the last hunt!"

There’s no question I damaged my hearing at Clemson football games, at least 30 rock concerts, and my ex-wife’s voicebox . Doesn’t help that I have a ski boat, countless power tools, and several firearms. How is it that everything a man likes to do hurts his hearing?

was much younger, I could be reading a book, and next thing I knew, my Mom (or anyone else) would be yelling in my ear, saying "You didn't hear me talking to you?" And, I would say "No, that's kind of the point of concentrating on what I'm reading."
Having a good "Tune Out" ability is a key to life.
