My Early Pick to Replace Dan Brooks

Jan 14, 2017, 2:14 PM

Brentson Buckner

A Clemson man who absolutely excelled at every level. He's been an assistant for the Arizona Cardinals for a while now, so he has solid coaching experience. He has played and coached in several regions of the country so he could be a national recruiting presence. He is a man of character that seemingly would mesh well with the staff and culture. He would relate extremely well to current, former, and future players.

Bring him back home to Tiger country!

That would be an awesome but expensive hire.

The average assisant coaching salary in the NFL is over 400,000 per year. Coordinators are now making 3 mi.

Could the NFL pension plan be a factor for Buckner?

Jan 14, 2017, 3:09 PM

Would he earn more the longer he stays in the NFL ranks?

Playing and coaching are completely different talents ...

Maybe Buckner would be a fantastic coach. But, maybe not.

Where did Dan Brooks play in the NFL? Or in college?

Buckner has done a pretty good job in the NFL.***

He might be great, just no guarantees.

And then there is the issue of compensation for a guy moving from the NFL to a minor assistant position on a college team.

I love the idea, for several reasons. 1) Clemson Man

2) NFL experience
3) new Coaching tree
4) When he tells a recruit that he knows what it takes at the next level and how to get there, he means it.

Only thing I would want to know, is, does he love to recruit? This is possibly the 3rd biggest component of this hire (#1 fitting in well with staff, and #2, knowledge and getting that through to players).

I agree with you.

He may very well be completely happy where he is and have no interest in coaching at the college level. He may have a "fit" issue with the current staff. He may not recruit well. There may be other factors. But I think it is an intriguing consideration. I think he would actually excel. We shall see what happens.
