My Daughter is Nuts!!!!

May 22, 2021, 2:14 PM

My daughter got a academic scholarship to attend Coastal Carolina. She applied to 5 schools and got accepted by all. 4 of those schools offered from partial to full academic scholarship. Guess which one didn’t offer anything? Clemson. Guess which school she chose to attend. Clemson. There goes another 100k. Lol

Years ago the University had shifted their scholarship money to raise their academic rankings (become one of the top 30 Universities) ... now that they are there and they have over 40K applications to enroll a class of just over 4k freshman, that money has been shifted to more needs based and diversity priorities.

from anywhere other than SC enroll. The rankings are great but a 180 from why the school came about in the first place. I’m sure I’m not the only one on Tigernet who would not get accepted today.

Careful, there are those here that were the top 20 out-of-state targets. ;) The in-state vs out-of-state is still something about 2/3 instate which is normal, slightly above that of most major public universities. Compare that to UNC which is 40% out of state. I bet the graduate student out-of-state is skewed more depending on the program but that is kinda normal.

Yeah, the school was originally "needs based" while men. Just changing it to "needs based" is fine by me.

I want Clemson to get the smartest hustle kid that they can enroll.

If she’s paying, it doesn’t matter.

May 22, 2021, 6:17 PM

If you’re paying, then your wallet was just cucked by your inability to stand your ground.

Some things are more important than money. I did the same thing years ago.

She should have went to coastal & transferred after 2 years on scholarship in my opinion. I went to Coastal Carolina 1st but I was majoring in beach women.using a really small part of my brain.

I know you must be proud of her either way!

This was my exact advice. Smaller college and then transfer. Most degrees have core courses that everyone has to take. Save 50K the first two years, then buy a new car. I’m extremely proud of her accomplishments so far and I’m trying to put her through school with no debt. We put our other two through school with no debt. I am thoroughly convinced that her mother (class of 90) and bragging about playing in the Tiger Band, and Clemson being such a wonderful place is going to cost me. I guess I will still drive my 1990 Ford Pickup for a few more years

If she continues to do well then the scholarships will come at Clemson as well. Might not lessen the blow as much, but you still have hope. Congrats.

Cut her some slack. I heard that there is something in those Hill up there - that it is a special place. Hit up every little scholarship/grant she can find. Maybe that will cover those extra funds. If not I also heard that Clemson degree gets a better pay check for the same degree as other in-state schools (not sure if all those other schools are in-state or not). ??

And congrats

Well, as long as you have the money and are willing to spend it, congrats.

I see a lot of kids coming out of school (doctorate) with up to $250k in debt. They really put themselves in a horrible position for their future.

For me personally, I would jump on the full ride without a doubt. I love Clemson and proudly graduated in 92, but I would not pay that money today. School was actually affordable back then but not so much today.

Just my $0.02...

This x 1000000000000000!

I LOVE Clemson and wish I could've made it work financially but had to settle for a local 4 yr college down the road from my hometown and bust my butt to not go deep into student loan debt.

Full Ride > No schollie/additional monies for school and you WOULD be crazy to bypass that, even for Clemson.

The day and age we live in is DEFINITELY no longer the "well, go where you want and the price will pay for itself" because the average student loan debt per student is only going to get worse with tuition and room and board going up and the cost of living really starting to hike up thanks to people fleeing more expensive states to move to cheaper areas.

Just my 2 cents as well but I'd even wager most college graduates would turn in their diploma if it erased their debt. At least you can sell a home and a car but a degree? No take-backs and good luck.

Spot on!. My son got accepted everywhere he applied and was offered large chunks of scholarship money from everyone but Clemson. He has chosen to go to Coastal because it will be free, as opposed to coming out of Clemson owing $80K+ in debt. I graduated from Clemson in '97 and my tuition was $3k my senior year. Being a top-ranked school is great, but what was wrong with what we used to be, a great school that most people in the state could afford to send their child to for a great education?

Which doctoral programs? MDs and JDs, ok sure because the income potential is there and those are expensive although JDs are losing their luster. MBA were kinda the same way but worth less now.

PhD, DDiv, EdDs, etc are nearly almost always paid via assistantship/fellowship, etc. So if they are paying for a PhD DDiv, EdDs, then they were very ignorant of the process (basically got scammed). In fact, most/many masters programs often have tuition waivers/assistantships. Thus if you are paying for a graduate degree, you really should not be there unless you can afford to pay the impatience tax.

I had a near full out-of-state tuition/fee waiver + $18K living stipend for my doctoral program. I amassed something like 177 credits for my doctorate program and tuition and fees cost me less than 8K total and that includes paying for 1 credit out-of-state not on assistantship to "graduate" during my dissertation.

Grad school is a different world. But undergrad in-state + paid graduate school isn't expensive if you follow the money.

Re: My Daughter is Nuts!!!!

May 26, 2021, 2:13 PM

I am glad that is the case now.
I got accepted by all the colleges I applied to, and of course chose Clemson.
In my day the cost for a year including used books, room and board was about $2K.
Clemson was small, there were no burger flipping jobs, no jobs at all.
After a couple years my great parents were mortgaged to the hilt. Both worked in the cotton mill just to get me there.

Getting up $2K every year was impossible for me. Took one semester off to work and save, got my draft notice.
It was a different world then.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). PT’s don’t make the kind of money to easily pay that off, at least not in Upstate SC.

10-4 - agree there as that is a tough gig depending on the area. The past year was even tougher.

A good friend/PT just got out from the loans right before covid so at least he didn't get hit hard that way but he saw most his clients evaporate. It has come back but yeah, I can see that issue.

100k? guess you are in state lol. My daughter had the same situation and just graduated from CU. Trust me - assuming you can afford it without taking on a bunch of debt, you won't regret it. What a special experience to share the CU experience with your girl. It's only money !

I don't have a kid or a $100K.
If I had a kid would rob a bank or a drug dealer to get her into Clemson.
You are blessed, and raised that kid right..

The good news is she will be guaranteed to learn not to use “a” before word that begin with vowels. But instead use “an” like “an academic scholarship” not “a academic scholarship”. So you’ll be getting your money’s worth.
