3 more pics of Coach Frank Howard, one showing tobacco plug!

Jan 26, 2022, 5:17 PM

Ha..with President R.C. Edwards on left, a man who truly loved Frank, Clemson Univ & Clemson football 110%.

Enclosed is pic of his funeral on hill next to stadium he helped build from 1940-1996 (notice how close DV is in background where Coach can actually hear “his Boys” play ball).

I attended the earlier public ceremony on a cold grim Sunday and it was on Super Bowl day too and the crowds in the thousands was sadly lessened b/c of that.

I drove from Charlotte since I would not have missed it especially considering the speakers like Bob Bradley, RC Edwards, Dean Walter Cox & Bonnie Banks McFadden.

And, another super pic is of a news article describing his 2nding his nomination and his $6000 starting salary in 1942.

My Dad played under scholarship for FH

from 1949 to 1952. My Dad "introduced" me to FH 3 different times, for the first time (LOL!). At the letterman's club each time. My Dad would say, you need to meet Frank and we I three different times. Late 70s

You brought back a specific memory of this larger-than-life man. I was mic-man and an alternate tiger mascot in 1989, and I attended two elementary school appearances with Coach Howard with me in the tiger suit. One school visit in Seneca and the other in Easley, and he drove us in his car with a chew in, red Solo spit cup in its holder, and a hand towel folded on the lowered arm rest to wipe any "residual" that didn't make it in the cup. The message he delivered to these kids should have been recorded for it was vintage Coach Howard, and I believe he received as much attention from them as The Tiger did.

I had the good fortune of knowing Coach Howard during my days at Clemson '55 thru '59.
My dad had preceded me having played freshman baseball for lst year at Clemson Coach Howard.
Thats right, Coach Howard was the Freshman baseball coach among his other duties.
The clincher for Coach and me was that my dad was raised in a family business which among other things sold chewing tobacco. Specifically Coach's favorite brand, Bohannon's Favorite. Coincidentally, that was my dads favorite. So, when my dad arrived on campus loaded with a case of Coach's favorite brand,he immediately became my Dad's best friend.
Being too little, and not good enough to play football, I inquired with Coach if I may become a manager.
Having remembered my dad, he immediately welcomed me as a manager.
Too many stories to tell here, but suffice to say those 4 years spent with my hero, the "Bashfull Baron of Barlow Bend" were my favorite years on this earth.
RIP Baron!

Thanks again & Go TiGERS!

Why Coach Frank Howard didn’t leave Clemson!

Jan 27, 2022, 10:40 AM [ in reply to Re: 3 more pics of Coach Frank Howard, one showing tobacco plug! ]

It wasn’t because he never had any offers for more money from other schools - no, he had offers but he stayed because of the Clemson teachers!

In his own words: "I had a lot of offers to go to other schools, but I turned them all down. Clemson was the only place I could bum chewing tobacco from the professors."??. Wonder if it was Bohannon’s?

He also said "I love this place.....I've got a spot already picked out where I want 'em to put me when I die -“ But with the tobacco free campus now, he may be a little disappointed he can’t smell it: “When I die, I want to be buried up there on that hill (Cemetery Hill) behind the stadium,” Howard was known to say. “I want to be there so I can hear all those people cheering my Tigers on Saturday and where I can smell that chewing tobacco in every corner of the stadium. Then, I won’t have to go to Heaven. I’ll already be there.”

He also had a rather unique way to measure distances. Do you know how far it is from Barlow Bend to Mobile? Frank said “it’s about three wagon greasin's from Mobile." (I check and that’s about 88 Miles!)

Finally, he said he had to retire due to illness - “the alumni are sick of me!”

What a legend!

Go Tigers!

I'll never forget standing there with Howard, my grandfather and my dad. Howard had a plug in and dad was smoking a cigarette. Frank turns to my dad and says, "Son, you smoke and I chew. If you don't blow your smoke on me then I won't spit on you." Classic!
