Soo...F-150 vs Tundra vs Ram 1500...Go!

Apr 10, 2013, 10:38 AM

I think I saw where one of y'all on here has a 2012 Ram...I'm not a believer in Dodge quality, but #### if it isn't the best looking truck out there by miles. Whoever you are, do you like it? Whose got what, and would you trade it? Not even going to consider a Titan, they only get like 12 mpg.

Apr 10, 2013, 10:44 AM

not so much.

The GM's have always been my preference, but they were getting a little long in the tooth compared to the new Ford/Dodge trucks. Hopefully the new ones catch back up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I saw a Consumer Reports yesterday that ranked the GM

Apr 10, 2013, 10:44 AM

stuff higher than either Dodge (2nd), or Ford (3rd) among the American brands.

I really have my doubts on these hi-tech V6's and their towing capacities. Only time will tell, I suppose.

If you talk to an independent mechanic, they will tell you that each one has a particular weakness.

About the V-6 or GM?

Apr 10, 2013, 10:49 AM

I equate GM's quality with that of Land Rover. It probably won't be running in 6 years, and if it is, not much on it will work.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

About GM....they may not do most things right, but

Apr 10, 2013, 10:52 AM

they got full sized trucks down.

Quality-wise they're all over Ford and Chrysler products, especially Chrysler.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You may be right, but I'll still never own a GM product

Apr 10, 2013, 10:56 AM [ in reply to About GM....they may not do most things right, but ]

Not to mention, we do a good bit of business indirectly with Chrysler and Ford...so it kind of behooves me to support their product. I just really want the Ram to not suck, as it's got the 5.7 and best looks by far.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree on GM. I don't know what they're thinking.

Apr 10, 2013, 10:54 AM [ in reply to About the V-6 or GM? ]

Sprinkled in with all of their vehicles over the past few years have been one or two decent accomplishments, but their interior trim stuff like knobs and switches just seem like crap.

Ford sells more trucks than anyone, but I think a Tundra is built like a tank. Supposedly, and I have been hearing this for awhile, they have plans for a diesel model. That would be your cat daddy ride.

"Every man is my superior, in that I may learn something from him."

I know, the Dodge is getting a diesel this fall too...

Apr 10, 2013, 11:05 AM

I'm not going to be able to wait that long, though. I've got random lights popping up, hellacious noise from the passenger side front end and the bed, a potential for a catastrophic radiator failure which would in turn ruin the transmission, and a warranty that's about up. The mfer has got to go and soon.

I'm really not sold on the Tundra's looks, though. If I could find the older body style with low mileage, I'd jump for one of those, but that won't be easy to find. The new ones just look massive.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The story I get on the Tundra is that the differential and

Apr 10, 2013, 11:10 AM

other drivetrain bits are already designed for the diesel torque.

No personal experience with any of those trucks

Apr 10, 2013, 12:19 PM [ in reply to I agree on GM. I don't know what they're thinking. ]

but I have two friends that are both contractors, and they've both got over 300k trouble free miles on their Tundras. One still drives his, and the other passed his down to a son that is driving it now. Also, pretty sure that Consumer Reports ranks it as the most reliable of all the full size trucks.

You really can't beat Toyota reliability...

Apr 10, 2013, 12:24 PM

My dad's put over 250k on two Sequoia's, and the current one is still running strong...Pretty much why I'm considering a Tundra.

I believe Ford will have a new diesel out next year too. Here it is with their new van.... Probable option for the F-150's too.

I'm looking at this van for next year too. I just need to haul lot's of stuff too.
Choices may be between the new Ford Sprint van or the Mercedes Sprinter van.

My 2 cents........I have a 2011 F-150 crew cab

Apr 10, 2013, 11:07 AM

I love it. I have the Ecoboost V6 and have had absolutely no problems with it at 35,000 miles. In my opinion Ford is heads and shoulders as far as engine choice, interior, and technology. To me the Chevy's interior is cheap my cousin who owns a 09 4 door Chevy was amazed by the roominess and quality of my interior compared to his. I used to think Dodge was a poorly built truck but they have really stepped it up with the Hemi engines and their interior. In my opinion the best trucks in order are Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Tundra. The Tundra is a good looking truck but their interiors are made of cheap looking plastic and they get awful gas mileage. Plus the Ford Sync system is really nice to have.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're on target if you're talking about the previous-gen

Apr 10, 2013, 11:14 AM

GM trucks...they did fall behind on technology and the interior. The new ones look pretty sweet though....I'll look forward to seeing one when they hit the showroom.

Also, on the Ram, I like that the 1500 has coil springs on the rear....may be a step down in capability, but it hits the needs of 95% of the people who buy a 1/2 ton pickup.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 10, 2013, 11:24 AM

Supposedly it has the best ride in its class.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looks like they have stepped it up on the interior

Apr 10, 2013, 11:25 AM [ in reply to You're on target if you're talking about the previous-gen ]

but they still cant compete with Fords leg room and flat floor in the backseat of the crew cab. Plus they are still hanging on to that 5.3 engine that produces less power and torque than the Ford's V6 and Dodge's Hemi

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What kind of mpg are you getting with that ecoboost?

Re: Soo...F-150 vs Tundra vs Ram 1500...Go!

Apr 10, 2013, 1:12 PM

If money wasn't an issue, I'd go with a Ford. Great looking truck and comfortable, roomy, functional interior.

Money was an issue for me though, so I got a Ram that looks just as good for 10k less than a similar Ford. The Ford does get slightly better gas mileage, so you might recoup some of that extra money over the years.
