my $.02 after a few days to think it over

Nov 30, 2022, 1:46 PM

First, some of you need to understand that Dabo is NOT going to throw any of his players or coaches under the bus. It is not who he is or what he does. Asking for him to be "honest" in his press conferences and wanting him to throw DJ, Streeter, the WR's, or anyone else under the bus is not going to happen. His loyalty is not for sale, no matter how bad the situation. I thought back to the rogue fake punt by Andy Teasdall in the ACC championship. Dabo went ballistic on the sideline but refused to throw him under the bus in the post-game press conferences. The most damaging quote I can find was "My punter, I don't have an explanation. He just tried to do something on his own." Dabo is forever loyal to his guys. If that is his biggest fault, he will gladly take that to his grave. With that said, I do think you will see some significant shake-up on the offensive side of the ball this offseason.

Second, and on a completely different subject. It seems like DJ hits a game each year where he loses his confidence. For whatever reason, when that confidence is gone, it does not seem to come back for the rest of the season.
Year 1. When he played for TL in 2 games, he was firing balls all over the field with supreme confidence. Anyone that watched him was amazed at his abilities.
Year 2. The GA defense destroyed our OL and had DJ running for his life. He seemed to lose all confidence and it didn't come back the rest of the season.
Year 3. No one can deny that DJ was playing well at the beginning of the season. Look back at the WF and NCSU games. He played well and made some excellent throws. Even the close games at the beginning of the season were not close because he played poorly. Then, for whatever reason, Syracuse broke him. He had a terrible game and had no confidence in his abilities. That carried over into ND and has been a problem ever since.

Dabo has thrown almost every player under the bus this year

The flaw in your 2 cents.

Dabo has blamed receivers for dropped passed, yet there were only 3 dropped passes in the SCAR game. There were 5 times as many errant throws.

What should the ratio of dropped passes to errant throws be? I'm thinking 1 to 2, not 1 to 5.

And i will always support Dabo and pull fir the Clemson Tigers. I just don't understand tge special rules for DJ. Maybe we will never know the truth, but to most fans (and possibly most football commentaries), DJ has played sub par the last 2 seaaons. He occasionally throws a great pass, but more often than not, he looks lost out there, does not see the whole field, and throws errant passes without much if any touch or accuracy. It is mind-boggling why DJ isn't benched or occasionally replaced. I assumed last year our opinions were thin, but we have a 5th year QB in Hunter, a 5 star freshman who went through Spring practice in Cade, and we have Hunter Helms who has proved to be quite serviceable.

Go Tigers!

Fix it, Dabo! Cause it looks to be broken. Losing at home this year to SCAR is unacceptable. Even Dabo said that after the game. Maybe he should have told the players and coaches that before the game.

I would almost agree with you except you are wrong. He has mentioned the receivers dropping passes, he has mentioned that DJ doesn't play safety or return punts. He has mentioned RB's fumbling the ball. I agree that it's not all DJ's fault but he does have a lot to do with it.
Dabo doesn't have to come out publicly and say what's really going on but #### don't lie straight to our faces.
Either way I have always pulled for my Tigers and always will.

"I would almost agree with you except you are wrong."
I laughed out loud when I read this. Not hating on your opinion, just loved the blunt nature of the comment.

I agree Dabo has called out positions and groups of players, but he has not thrown a specific person or player under the bus. Dabo also said there were plays DJ would like to have back and referenced some specific plays where a WR was running open. This is still not close to the response many on this site are requesting. Dabo won't do that.

At the end of the day...

Nov 30, 2022, 2:04 PM

DJ just didn't develop into the QB everyone anticipated. I'm not sure that he possesses the football acumen that is needed to effectively run an RPO-style offense. I won't even get into all of his other issues (holding on to the ball too long, locking in on one receiving target, an inability to progress through his reads properly and timely, inconsistency throwing the ball, etc.). The play calling and the offensive game planning have to be adjusted based on the limitations at QB.

I agree 100% with this assessment of DJ. For the record, I also think DJ transfers after this season and CK is the starter next year.

I also think DJ gave us the best chance to win enough games to be in the playoff this year. Obviously, it is all conjecture, but if Cade had started from game 1 this season do most folks not feel like we would have probably lost 2 or more games on the season? A true freshman is just not ready to take over from day 1. Even DW and TL needed some time to figure it out freshman year and they were truly exceptional talents. Perhaps Cade would have helped us win the SCAR game, but he would not have had us in a playoff spot if he starts from game 1.

Re: At the end of the day...

Nov 30, 2022, 2:20 PM

Outsiders who watched our games knew we were not a playoff team with DJ running the offense. It looked like a titanic struggle to move downfield and score with him at the controls. A year with Cade and maybe we went 9-3 and missed the ACC Championship at worst I would say. Cade might put the ball at risk but DJ has too. The difference is Cade would have grown by leaps and bounds playing every game as a starter. DJ has not grown much, if at all, in 25 games. Cade might have had us peaking at the end of the season, not struggling. We will never know but at least the Tigers can play for a trophy this weekend. If we fall behind by two scores the game will be over though. That’s just a fact.

Re: At the end of the day...

Nov 30, 2022, 2:25 PM

I very much agree with this. I just know Clemson fans would not have been satisfied with a 9-3 or 8-4 season and no ACC championship because we were allowing CK to take his lumps as a freshman.

On the other hand, we may have to take some lumps next season with him as a first year starter.

I am in favor of starting CK in the ACC championship and bowl game to get him some playing time. I don't think there is any way Dabo does this, but I would be in favor.

Brad has shown a willingness to make changes.

Nov 30, 2022, 2:28 PM

Brad is willing to bring in transfers to improve the team. Dabo? Not so much.

Brad has made assistant coaching changes when he feels they are needed. Dabo? Not so much recently.

Dabo seems to be in status quo mode the last few years, despite evidence that more significant changes need to be made.

We will see what he does this offseason, but as I've said, I will be surprised if anything changes.

Nov 30, 2022, 2:38 PM

any of these changes helping us become competitive in even the top half of the ACC? Any of these help us make the NCAA tourney? Heck, how about the NIT?

Making huge changes that don't help the program is not a sign of success. It is a sign of desperation.

If Dabo ran his program just like Brad and had the exact same success (or lack thereof) would you be happy with the results because he was "showing a willingness to change"?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't understand this belief that Dabo will

Nov 30, 2022, 2:12 PM

make big changes.

The last time he made any big changes was over a decade ago, when he brought in two new coordinators from outside the program.

Since then, he hasn't made any big changes. He had a golden opportunity to make some big changes this past offseason when he replaced both of his coordinators. What did he do? He simply promoted from within. Yawn.

As I've said before, I'm not convinced that:

A. Dabo believes that we have any real problems, and
B. That he thinks any significant changes are necessary

I'll be shocked if we have any big changes this offseason. The biggest change we might see is a position coach being replaced, but even that would surprise me.

Re: I don't understand this belief that Dabo will

Dabo hasn't made any big changes in a decade because there was no need to make big changes. This is the first time since he fired Kevin Steele after the WVU game that we have had these types of problems. You can say the problems started last season on offense but that was under a different OC.

I am 100% confident Dabo knows there are real problems. I also believe he has too much character to call folks out by name after a loss.

No one is asking him to be a jerk

Nov 30, 2022, 2:33 PM

and call people names.

I think we all appreciate Dabo's loyalty to his players and coaches. It's an admirable trait.

That loyalty can also backfire when it prevents accurate assessments of situations and necessary personnel changes.

Again, our offense has stunk for two years, and there were signs that there were issues with our philosophy dating back several years. Dabo doesn't see a problem, doesn't know how to fix the problem, or is unwilling to fix the problem.

It's really that simple.

BINGO!!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Throw under the bus. . . " ???

Nov 30, 2022, 2:44 PM

just to be clear, not everyone who's leveling harsh criticism is suggesting Dabo "throw anyone under the bus." The point has been made, and it is correct, that Dabo would never, and should never, speak w/ the kind of disrespectful frankness in a presser that some folks might, in the heat of the moment, prefer in cathartic mode. Fair enough. That's true and to Dabo's credit. It's wise generally, and no doubt largely fueled by his desire to treat his players with the appropriate dignity, regardless of football performance. But this point, true as it may be, is entirely irrelevant to all but the most base criticisms. There is a huge middle ground between "throwing them under the bus," one the one hand, and shifting blame all around in inaccurate and dishonest ways ("DJ is a 'long way away' from the reason why we lost), on the other.

Furthermore, and more importantly, if he and Streeter find themselves treating members of the media (and, to a lesser extent, fans) as if they are asking unfair questions with ill-intent, as if they are simply looking to take gratuitous shots at players - then that amounts to a type of indirect slander in their hyper-self defensiveness. Dabo has every prerogative to state that he is making what he believes is the best decision if that's what he believes. But the minute he and Streeter have to start saying or implying unsubstantiated ill-intent of even the most respectful critics, they are drawing and earning some blowback.

My thinking since last year: a misread by our staff,

Nov 30, 2022, 3:31 PM

predicated upon the west coast hype over his talents.

He may have been outstanding at his school's level of play; how he would have performed at one of California's largest schools is an entirely different matter.

I appreciate DJ's willingness to travel across the country to lend his services; I appreciate his strenuous efforts to improve during the past off-season; he will always be a Clemson brother. I also believe he should transfer to a west coast program immediately upon graduation, as it will be time for new blood up under center.
