Must admit my hopes for this baseball team have dropped

Mar 5, 2014, 9:00 PM

over the past week. I was so excited about this team and its chances a week ago. Tough weekend, no, very tough weekend followed by a stupid "softball" game loss is leading me to believe we need a much better pitching coach and need to recruit some good pitchers!!

deroberts had him pumped up to believe we had a hof coach that was going to set the woods on fire. we may set the woods on fire but we will not finish better than 5 th if that high in the acc.

Our starters

Mar 5, 2014, 10:57 PM

Are fully capable, however they pitch scared...but they don't call their own pitches either. I thought each of our starters vs scar gave us a chance, 2 of 3 should've won. Talent is there...bullpen is not very good right now though. Defense is killing our pitchers confidence.

Pepicelli is a BIG part of the problem IMO

He is the pichhing coach and he calls all of the pitches but was an outfielder during his playing days.

Clemson has lost some quality assistant coaches over the last several years and has not replaced them with coaches who were s good or better.

We always start slow and finish strong. It's been our thing

for several seasons now.

You apparently missed the 2011 Clemson Regional....

Mar 6, 2014, 8:46 AM [ in reply to We always start slow and finish strong. It's been our thing ]

where UConn beat Clemson 14 - 1 or the 2013 Columbia Regional when Clemson was eliminated after losing two to Liberty (8 - 3 and 10 - 2) which came on the heels of Clemson winning absolutely ZERO games in the 2013 ACC baseball tournament for the first time in more than ten years (6 - 3 loss to NC State, 12 - 7 loss to UNC and a 7 - 0 loss to Miami).

It sure is a good thing we finish so strong.

Maybe we should run him out of town like Tennessee did Fulmer or Ole Miss did Cutcliff....careful what you wish for.

After a couple of days to vent, I am not worried, as the weather warms up so will the baseball team. It happens every year, we will be in solid contention for a regional and it will start with a sweep of VT. It won't excuse the continuous collapses against SC, but it will ease the pain!

I think it's mental. The talent is there but the guys seem to put more pressure on themselves to perform. 2 out of 3 were there for the taking. Just go out and have fun. I don't understand why the coaches can't fix this.

I think there are several issues involved:

1. Baseball is a historically a game of 'streaks or stretches' just look at the MLB, it is long season and even though the tigers are going through a 'rough patch' right now, hopefully it is going to end... SOON! Every year teams that may start 15-0 will hit stretches where they lose say 4 of 5.

2. Similiar to a sport like golf, baseball requires a loose, comfortable approach. This team does have talent, and the idea of some of these talented young infielders 'pushing' the veterans can at times have a negative impact for certain individuals. If your veteran has not had to worry about someone taking his position in the past, it can cause him to tighten up and maybe move out of his comfort level at times. A 'true player' will overcome that and move forward. I think the early part of the season has been a bit of a 'tryout' so to speak in the minds of some of the upperclassmen and to this point a couple have not handled the added pressure as well as they possibly could have.

3. Good pitching beats good hitting every time, we will improve in that area. (bullpen)

4. You hear that 'hitting is contagious' in baseball. Unfortunately so are errors. After a few seamless games I see our defense shoring up and playing with the confidence and execution they are capable of.
