Started with one, she's had a few swarm on her over the years, she actually drove down to Kershaw to retrieve a swarm. It's been interesting to watch. And, far more expensive than I ever imagined it would BEE.

started, plus the investment in the gear you need and the expense of buying sugar to make the syrup to feed a new hive for about a year and then you're about two years from any significant honey harvest from day one. The best thing you can do if interested is to take a beginner beekeeping class. They're usually free if you do it through a county beekeeper association. There are a LOT of bee farms, bee supplies, and expertise (including Clemson University) all around where you live so support is a lot easier to come by than around here.

One hive has swarmed twice already, but still is going like gangbusters ... that Queen is a laying fool.
To anyone contemplating this hobby, don't trust those youtubers that say you don't need safety gear ...
cause that is absolute nonsense. Catch them on a bad day and they will light up your world ...
and always, I repeat always smoke them if you crack the hive open.

They weren't hers originally, but they are now. When YOUR OWN bees swarm, chances are you aren't finding them. As for gathering them up...you just scoop them up by (gloved) hand into one of the plastic boxes that you get when you buy your first herd of bees.
