Most Underrated Tiger of All Time

Jan 31, 2022, 1:06 PM

I was watching the playoffs this weekend and saw Dorian O’Daniel playing for the Chiefs. He has had a pretty stellar career as a backup LB and special teams. That had me thinking, who is the one Tiger that was at Clemson under the radar then did great things in the NFL.

I think Dorian had a quiet career with Clemson due to injuries and then had a pretty stellar final year.

After his performance this year DJ Reader might be a candidate

Reader is a good choice as he was always overlooked at Clemson.

He played the role of Big Dex before Clemson could sign the 5 star guy to play that role.

A monster in the middle that let the LBs play a little more free because they knew the run game was not going to come easy up the middle.

I don't remember what happened, but it appears Reader

Jan 31, 2022, 1:25 PM [ in reply to Re: Most Underrated Tiger of All Time ]

only played in 14 games for us over his last two seasons ('14 and '15) and only recorded 29 tackles in that time frame. I looked this up yesterday and was surprised because i remember him being a pretty impactful player here. Did he get injured both years?

Reader took extended time off for personal issues. Don't

Jan 31, 2022, 6:26 PM [ in reply to I don't remember what happened, but it appears Reader ]

know what those issues were, but Dabo stuck with him through all of it. I honestly thought he was done with football during that time. I remember being SHOCKED that he made an NFL team, and REALLY surprised when he made a Pro Bowl. Now, he is one of the best at his position in the league.

If you are taking just college career, I suggest Willie Jordan in the middle 70's. He played qb, wr, kicked off, returned punts and kickoffs, and probably some other things I do not remember. And he was not that big.

I have always thought Andre Ellington was very underrated by most Clemson fans.

I think there are two reasons for that.

One is because he followed Spiller and the other is because they think more of his injuries than his performance because of missing so much of the 2010 season when Clemson really needed a playmaker. He was then overshadowed by Watkins and Hopkins in his last 2 seasons when he was mostly healthy.

If you look statistically, Ellington compares pretty well with many of the other great Clemson RBs not named Spiller or ETN.

Ellington had a pretty strong career going in the NFL as well until injuries cost him his starting job and effectively pushed him out of the league.

Other players that I would include in the group of most underrated who went on to do well in the NFL would be in no particular order:

Jaron Brown
Chandler Catanzaro
BJ Goodson
Adam Humphries
Tyler Shatley
Byron Maxwell
Coty Sensabaugh
Bashaud Breeland

Good list here

Only one I'd single out as not "underrated" would be Cat Man.

He had a rough start but he was almost automatic his final 2 years and I think we all appreciated him (especially that LSU game winner).

The end of his era and Greg Huegel's as starter were the less stressful years of watching a kicker I've had -- Potter has definitely eased my blood pressure each season so hope he goes out in style too.

In terms of their college careers, both Kendall Joseph and Baylon Spector were underrated because of exceptional talent around them. Hard nosed, high IQ backers that were all about team. Clemson through and through,

Dwight Clark (1975-1978) has my vote. While he was a reliable reserve WR for the Tigers, he never blossomed until he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers and became a hall of famer for them by teaming up with Joe Montana to lead them to several Super Bowls during the 1980's!

Based on time in the league.... you could argue for Clipboard Jesus, Charlie Whitehurst. Drafted in 3rd round in 2006 and played 11 NFL seasons.

Won't make the Hall of Fame, but 11 years in the NFL is not easy.

Well I wanted to throw Big Man Mountain Corey Hulsey out there as he left Clemson early and was not even drafted. Stuck around the NFL for about 9 or 10 years. Never forget when he got to Clemson they asked him what he thought. Said he loved it - he could eat all he wanted and it was free. Cory was from Lula Ga and was about 6"6" and 340 as a Tiger. Charlie is right choice. Could throw it in a shoe box from 30 yards. Did more with less supporting cast than any Tiger QB in history.

No doubt, Dwight Clark blossomed after the draft. Was exactly who I thought of. Jeff Bostic might be another that really did well in the NFL with the Redskins. He was very good at Clemson but not a superstar but certainly had a superstar career in NFL.

to mind. Both those guys were solid guys but never considered as NFL potential when they played at Clemson. Both guys played or playing many years in the NFL and where in starting lineups and big time contributors for teams. I'd also put Deshawn Williams in that category. He's still playing. Not easy to do. And we've had many 4/5 star defensive lineman that didn't do half of what those 3 did. Kudos to them for realizing their own potential. Most never get there.

Frank Magwood. Best hands on the 1981 championship team.

Michael Dean Perry. He was underrated while in college because he was in the very large shadow of his brother. I still think he may have been the better of the two.

Grady Jarrett. He didn’t have the splashy headlines while in college but he’s one of the best ever.

Maybe not the most underrated, but did meet his brother once and got a Christmas Card from him back in 1976.
His Clemson career was not stellar but he did make the all ACC team at wide receiver in 1969.He lettered 3 years and was also inducted into to the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981
Yes, his career is somewhat dated ,but he was drafted by my favorite pro team where he was part of two Super Bowl winning teams.
I give you Mr. Charlie Waters.

Dawkins was a very good player while at Clemson but nobody foresaw the stellar career he would have in the NFL.

good player for us, but I did not see anything to foreshadow a Hall of Fame NFL career. There were others, Terry Kinard in particular from the DB standpoint, that I would have thought would have lasted longer in the league.

I know a lot of people will say Hunter Renfrow, but Clemson people already knew he was going to be SOMEBODY's draft steal, it was just a question of could he survive the hard knocks of the NFL.
