Morris Post-Game Interviews

Aug 31, 2014, 10:08 AM

I'm a 1984 grad. I love my Tigers. I love my Tigers this morning. I'm not in love with the coaching staff efforts yesterday esp. Morris. The Morris post-game interviews are as cringe-worth as the 2nd half.

Morris looks like a deer in the headlights with a terminal case of coach-speak clinging to the notion that we are young and inexperienced and must keep it conservative and must run the football. He talks a great deal about field position. What he overlooks or chooses to ignore is, with his best young players on the sideline, his play-calling in the 2nd half could have been made by a nervous middle school coach with 6th grade backfield.

Cole Stoudt has a full understanding of our Offense. #19 has been at Clemson for years. The O-Line is full of veterans. And yes we have some young WR's. Somehow TX A&M's O-Coordinator and FSU's O-Coordinator taught redshirt freshmen to win Heisman's, and Chad Morris is AFRAID to let a 5th year senior go vertical to keep the UGA line & LB's from running straight downhill. And UGA's freshman RB's knew how to take a hand-off and bull-doze Venable's exhausted Defense. We know you have mind the Coach - but you showed no cojones yesterday. You allowed the Offense to be timid and weak due to your lack of confidence in your players, and you facilitated our Defense quitting in the 4th Qtr when they had given up hope of an Offensive 1st down.

UGA clearly had the better team and the better coaches (Pruitt owned you worse than Coach Red owned Coach Klein/Henry Winkler) because you were afraid of field position and afraid to let your younger more talented players in the game. Well guess what? Your lack of guts impacted the game as much as UGA's fearless coaching and playing and special teams.

So anyway ... we move on to the rest of the season and a big game against an FSU team that will drill us if the coaching and allocation of playing time does not improve. Pls call Coach Mahlzahn for some tips on how to not play afraid. Is it fair to say Mahlzahn taught UGA DB Nick Marshall how to have enough confidence to win the SEC and beat Saban in his 1st year starting at QB at Auburn.

I accept losing. I accept when we are outplayed and outcoached. It happens. It's part of the game and UGA looks tough. Yet when our coaches are afraid to put our more talented younger players on the field with competitive play calling it is hard to swallow. I cannot accept when our highly paid coaches tell our recruits at all positions (O and D) they will have the chance to compete to play, and they do not. In the end, talent trumps knowledge of the playbook. I am certain, because you and Dabo and Coach V are better than you allowed our team to be against UGA, that we will improve against weaker ACC teams after the FSU game. Coach them up and put our best players in the game with plays that are competitive. Do not confess after a big game that you were afraid to compete because of field position and inexperience.

I work in aviation. We are very conservative and play it safe because lives are on the line every day. There are constant safety, quality and delivery pressures, and the need to meet the bottomline for stockholders and board members. So don't tell me college football pressures are unique or all the P.E. coaches coaching the college teams are geniuses. Very few are - though they watch a lot of film, what they choose to do with their players and play calls define more who they are than their ability to break down a tendency on film. So I am hoping when our coaches rip our players today and this week, and they will with their million dollar bank accounts, that our coaches esp. Coach Morris, understands that their allocation of playing time, recruiting, play calling and lack of cojones in the 2nd half played a greater role in the runaway 4th Qtr than the our players quitting. No apologies. Get out of the way and give these kids a chance to compete coaches. Go Tigers!

Very well said. And, on point. This has been the case against FSU and Carolina. A good, well coached team exposes Morris conservatisim and inability and/or unwillingness to adapt to game situations. We will continue to struggle against top notch defenses if Morris cannot or will not change.

Excellent post and I agree wholeheartedly. Much of the reporting here focuses on how well the Tigers did in the first half! So what...I am an old Army Aviator with combat time in RVN...if you win the first half of a battle but ultimately lose the second half...YOU LOSE! Who cares what you did in the first half! Clemson was thrashed and embarrassed in the second half and exposed again on National TV. Yes, it is early but take Clemson out of the National conversation for now! Sure...we will have another winning season beating up all the North Carolina schools and Big East cast-offs but, if the Tigers don't also manage wins over FSU and USC...IMHO...it will NOT be a successful season. Need to see some leadership from the coaches and players and let's "go to war" and get back in the National conversation! GO TIGERS!!

armyfan: I can't agree more. Too much bs from the coaching staff and not enough tough talk. For the life of me i can';t understand the play calling in the second half. It was clear to an old dummy lkike me that our calls were not going to get us on the move so we just continue to make the same calls. Where were the slant passes over the middle, ditto for passes to the TE, QB draw plays, modified screen passes,m etc. etc. Apparently they do not exist in our playbook and if not, I ask why not.

Good analysis however...

You can not over look the fact of readiness and focus. Ga ran the ball alot because it was safer for them to control the game. We lost control at the point of Williams dropping passes. It cause Stoudt to loose confidence in him and our offence struggled as a result. College football has and always will be about tempo. Whoever controls the tempo wins the game. Period!

Also after Coles INT he went like 4 series without even looking past linebacker depth.

Watch the INT play again. The routes on that plays were weird. I hope it was a break down.

The drop passes hurt, but it is ridiculous to say that is the reason we quit passing down field. The game was tied at half - and we should have been ahead. We were down 3 in the 4th quarter, but Morris has us playing not to lose and hang on. It wore the defense down. It gave Georgia more confidence. We quit going against their inexperienced secondary which worked in the first half. The coaches did a terrible job in the 2nd half.

first quarter.

the wrs bounced back, including williams after those drops. save the missed fg near the end the half, clemson finished fairly strong after the drops. i'd say the conservative play calling started before the missed kick as with plenty of time, cu seemed to be playing for the fg & not 6.

*** and before i let it go, notice the field position of the drive & chad forcing it down field. seems his "reasoning" only held true in the 2nd half?

deadsol: great observation on the field position comment. Right on the money

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One of those 'drops' was because of a great play by UGA DB.

Hat on ball.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's only because Williams let the ball get to his body

Aug 31, 2014, 3:27 PM

It looked like Martavis, Part 2.

Catch the ball with your hands and you can secure it from the defender.

socman: Great post I add: where were the quick slants over the middle, passes to our TE's, QB draws, screen passes, etc. all counter moves to an overly aggressive defensive line rush augmented by 1 or 2 LB.s. I could go on and on.
This was football 101 and Morris should be ashamed of himself. He was sorely out coached and wasn't man enough to buck up to it. I was appalled at the play calling in the second half so conservative, so repetitive, so predictable--so inexperienced. If Georgia were to do the same thing to FSU or Auburn to name 2 teams, does anyone honestly believe that they would not attempt counter moves.
This coaching staff needs to look in the mirror, get off their high horses and start coaching basic football. Sorry to be so blunt. Yes we got beat by a better team that day but what did we try and do to stem the tide? My answer. not a darn thing. Amen

a new position, and our most experienced OL was suspended. Tough place to to start the year with that. Getting Beasley back will stabilize things in the middle. Gore and Battle will get better at T every game.

I was disappointed in the playcalling as well, though I get it. Field position was atrocious but sure would have liked to have seen them go for a big play on first down to get out of the hole a time or 2. Georgia had 8 in the box until we had to pass and then they just brought it knowing what was coming.

Work out some kinks and get some young guys(Gallman, Choice, Scott, Priester and Kitt) some real PT this week then take it to FSU with a nothing to lose attitude. We're probably 20 point underdogs there but OkSt isn't a world beater and plyed them really tough yesterday. They're human, and Jamies is due for some mistakes

my thoughts exactly. thanks for posting so I didn't have to***
