Trivia #1 - Does the track get grungy?

Jun 14, 2022, 1:55 PM

Happy Birthday to the Disneyland Monorail!

It seemed like space age stuff when it opened today, June 14, in 1959, but actually it was pretty old-school.

There was one back in 1876 at the US Centennial celebration, and here's one from 1909 in Russia that is balanced by gyroscopes. Whoa.

But the Disney one was a big leap forward because it actually worked. And still does. It even won an award for being cool.

The Anaheim one is 2.5 miles long, and the Orlando one 15 miles long. China has 3 of 20,30, and 60 miles long.

There are over 50 monorail systems in the world right now. Other than Walt's, name a city in the U.S. that has one.

We have a winner! Murc takes the prize with the world-famous Springfield Monorail!

Other winning answers would have included Seattle. Las Vegas, Detroit, Jacksonville, Memphis, Newark, and some place in Hawaii.

Congrats to Murc!
