More depresssing Brownell stats because there are no other

kind.

The Brad Brownell Bros are working hard this week. Bashing Oliver Purnell. Bashing our players. All for the glorification of his holiness.

Especially after UNC's run to the final there was an effort to discredit just how bad the ACC was the year. How bad was it? Well almost as historically awful as the previous two years. I've used that phrase - historically awful - and it gets a lot of push back. Unfortunately, it's true.

Having a few minutes to spare I have gone over RPI data going back to Purnell's first year. I can already hear the BBBs as they push up their glasses and insist the RPI is a bad metric and that KenPom or whatever is most favorable to them is better. But they won't actually go do the work because it isn't that much more favorable.

My task was to determine what percentage of ACC competition finished the season with an RPI below 100. Arguing that the RPI is bad for determining the 43rd and 44th best at large team is one thing. Arguing that a team below 100 is remotely good is another. This should, but it won't, put to rest which coach has played in a harder ACC.

From the season ending 2004 until 2010 only 18% of teams within the ACC would finish with an RPI lower than 100. In 2004, Purnell's first year, Clemson would be the only team to finish below 100. In five of Purnell's season's only 1 or 2 teams in the ACC finished outside of the top 100.

For his tenure, Brad Brownell has had the benefit of playing 38% of his ACC games against teams with a sub-100 RPI. In the last 3 years Brownell has played a staggering 51% of his games against sub-100 RPI teams. If, after 9 years, Brad Brownell was ever going to assert himself as a force in the ACC this was the time to do it. Instead, we've sat home, exited in the first round, and would have sat home.

If you think you can parse the data in something that in any way defends this coach, go for it. But it is, in fact, a historically weak ACC. And our 12th year coach has failed to parlay that into anything.

I suggest to fans to listen to Brad's state of the program address from today. Really a lot of insight. It was about 28 mins long. Brad said he knows they should do better, but said only 6 or 7 ACC teams including Clemson have been to two NCAATs or more in the last 5 years. He said other coaches and even ADMINSTARATORS have noticed the good work.

That quote is exactly why I looked all this up. Only half the teams (roughly) in the conference were above that 100 RPI in that 5 years. So two facts can be true - we’re the 7th or 8th best team in the league in wins (his take and not a great one anyway) AND we’re at the top of the bottom half of the league which (the bottom half) has become extremely non-competitive.

It would be more comforting if our coach compared himself to the rest of the country instead of just the acc. Dabo certainly wasnt satisfied with only acc championships.

would love for us to keep Brown L as long as possible. Same reason I was a fan of Muschamp and am still a fan of Ray Tanner at SCar.

NcTigs, thanks for paying attention to what’s currently happening in the program. And you do it consistently. You don’t do it so that less involved fans like me can say “Thank you”—it’s clear that you really care. When you speak, I listen, not because your judgment is flawless, but at least it’s well-informed and pointed in the right direction.

Sometimes though, I wonder what you want a coach to say. Do you want him to use coach-speak all the time? Do you want him to only answer questions with “That’s my fault.”? I’ve heard him say many times “A coach’s job is to put his players in the best position to win.” Sometimes that results in success, sometimes not, and sometimes the coaches fail to get them there.

Obviously Coach B sees the need to provide a reasonable basis for fans to support the program who have become unenthusiastic about Tiger basketball. It’s unfortunate that he must rally support for his players just because he’s been here so long. In that locker room, there is no such thing as supporting the players but not the coach. If the players and coach are successfully divided by disgruntled fans, the program is done.

In case you haven’t noticed, basketball season is over. The decision has already been made to bring Brad back. Please give it a rest and quit whining. It has become extremely boring.

Wait, aren’t you the guy that flexed on behalf of Monte Lee? I’ve been tagging you. That was a hilarious hot take. I guess you enjoy bad coaches. You’re entitled.

Agree with you. Season is over. I'm willing to bet that this rander has never played or coached basketball in the college or pro level but apparently believes he knows everything about coaching basketball. Last time I checked there was a winner and loser in every game.

So you never express any opinion on anything that you haven’t done professionally? Seems like a really sophisticated perspective. And what the season being over matter if only former coaches have the right to criticize other coaches. Virtually everybody on this board needs to log off. I mean I've actually coached organized basketball which probably puts me ahead of 95% of this board’s users but I certainly wasn’t paid. What you’re really saying is you don’t like what I’m saying but have no competent rebuttal to my points.

I don’t know what the expression I used means? It’s a play on a very common expression that would be a violation of TOS to explain in full. But it means your being sold a bunch of bull and goobling it eagerly.

Such a lame take, you don’t have to be a chef to know if food taste like crap. You don’t have to be a CEO to know if your company is going bankrupt.

The featured story on the TNET home page is about Brownell's statements today.

So, naturally, people are talking about it. That's why there's a message board.

It's over, but there has been press conferences and articles this week. We don't have baseball to keep our minds off of things either.

I will agree that a decision has been made, but argue with the ones that agreed with the decision to shut up. I can live with the decision and will support Brownell next year. However, if somebody tries to explain why it was a good decision to keep him, then I am going to explain why I think they are wrong.

Here’s another perspective for you:

Apr 13, 2022, 5:03 PM

The bottom 8 of the ACC in 2022 have an average RPI of 182. The Southern Conference has an average RPI of 154. So yes, if we moved to the SoCon there is a good chance Brad could lead us to the championship game. That’s where we are and the BBBs just keep rolling around in it.

Our problem is we have some decent but not great players. Now Hall is and will be outstanding but we depend on hot night guys and not those who can carry a program. Ranking wise he is starting to get better players but we dont have two every night go to guys so as a result it gets us in to tight games. His good years most of those close ones fall our way. The bad years not so much. I am hoping PJ and now with HT coming back give us 2 good ones. The improvement of Chase Hunter is also encouraging.

I just wish they would update the roster since the season has been over more than a month.

This is everything. “Historically awful” is an accurate phrase, and we have been mediocre in an historically awful period which translates into pathetic.

But if the BBBs are correct, then we’ll get better when Brownell brings home more bacon. Because that makes perfect sense. “Pay me more. I’ll perform better.”

No worries…The gauntlet has been thrown down by Neff. I’m guessing we have one more year of Brownell and we can finally move on.
