More and more folks are reporting that Kevin Steele...

Dec 15, 2020, 4:38 PM

.... is the leading candidate for the Auburn job.

If these rumors are true and he gets the job, I'll be surprised. I just don't see the draw for him. 9-36 as a HC at Baylor. Journeyman DC at several schools in the southeast. Auburn isn't Vanderbilt or Duke. Auburn doens't have the money that Texas or Bama has, but it's not like they have to hire someone on the cheap.

Are they in the situation that SC was in when they hired Muschamp - nobody wanted the job?

Some folks are saying Freeze is waiting on the Vols. Cristobal is getting a nice payraise in Oregon (and Phil Knight really likes him). Sarkesian is either waiting on a better job or is going to Arizona.

Even so, I wouldn't think that Steele would be Plan B.

But, apparently Steele has a group of influential people at Auburn who are pushing hard for him.

I'm willing to accept the rumors may be true. But, I'm still very skeptical.

Auburn is a significant upgrade compared to uof6c...

However, the expectations for developing a winning program and beating Bama (at pretty much any and all costs) are tremendous.

Then, there is the meddling and corruption involving booster and former board of trustee member Bobby Lowder and those like him. Louder, who is a former bank executive, would bribe other board members through interest free loans. He was effectively the schools athletic director and had a heavy hand in all coaching hires if not sole control.

There are about five or six people who served on the Auburn Board of Trustees and the Colonial BancGroup’s Board of Directors. So effectively, the people controlling Auburn’s booster funds also controlled one of the state’s most powerful banks and they used it to funnel money to recruits, players and the parents of recruits and players.

The bank was ultimately shut down by banking regulators and purchased by BB&T. Lowder was booted off of the Board by the Alabama state legislature but there are still more just like him and any coach there has to deal with them.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

And all of a sudden, the Scam Newton experience makes sense.

.....among other players/families that were probably paid to attend Auburn.

Look, I'm not naïve enough to think that some shady stuff doesn't go on at Clemson - but I've never heard about it.

But if they care about winning why would they want Steele? smh

Good thread guys, thanks.

Auburn doesn't have the money.....

Dec 15, 2020, 5:15 PM

Jimmy Ranes is worth about $700,000,000 and he seems perfectly willing to spend $20M on Auburn's football fortunes almost as a lark. Auburn has a lot of problems and one of them might be Jimmy Ranes. But money is not a problem for Auburn football.

The Rane family owns YellaWood which is worth an estimated $700 million.

Rane is personally worth more than $900 million.

It was rumored that Bobby Lowder was the only bank that would loan Jimmy Rane the money to get YellaWood started.

Kevin Steele = disaster

Dec 15, 2020, 5:25 PM

Except for the fact that we got Brent V when Steele was kicked out the door.

I built a business that cleaned and treated wood structures; decks, fences, boat docks, etc to look like new. Yella Wood is pure crap. No wonder he made so much money.

I heard the same thing today at work. My buddy’s wife is a Auburn grad and said that coach Steele has been working on this for some time now. Said that there were some very influential donors that are pushing for this.

makes no sense unless a bigtime OC was part of the package.***

What was wrong with Kevin Steele while at Clemson?

Dec 15, 2020, 11:53 PM

Was it mental problems? Lack of motivation? Just plain weird? What was his deal?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mostly scheme related...He was dead set on running man

Dec 16, 2020, 12:53 AM

coverages and QB scrambles would eat us alive...Vic Koening was the weirdo with behavior problems...Steele had his issues, but was an upgrade over Vic
