Speaking as a lifelong Bears fan, I hated Mitch from the get go. That is the general sentiment from most Bears fans.

fact that the Bear fanbase, media, seemingly everything, was so obviously against him from the get go, as you say, meant that his chances of success were seriously diminished from Day One.

The whole rise of MT was surreal. He had backed up Marquise Williams for 2 seasons. As a rising junior, UNC fans expected him to be a two year starter - having patiently waited his turn. MT had shown promise as a back up but no one was saying he was the second coming of Joe Montana.
He got off to a good start in 2016, leading the Heels to come from behind victories against FSU and PItt. By the end of October, we began hearing reports that Mitch was now a consensus first round selection; then top ten; finally top 3. This, after his being the starter for only two months.
Fedora then started protecting him and stopped him from running the ball in order to protect the prized QB. UNC's season then went into the tank, losing to Duke and NCSU and eventually Stanford in the bowl game.
My point is that UNC fans were more surprised than anyone about the meteoric rise of MT and his anointment by the NFL as a top 3 selection. The consensus at the time is that MT needed another season in college to learn how to be a QB and read defenses but the NFL (by propelling him to the top of the draft) essentially forced his hand to leave college for the NFL. I think this retarded his growth and he would have been better, in the long run, to remain in college for his senior season and 2nd year as a starter.
Having said all that, being a back of qb in the NFL for a decade or so will set you up for life financially.
