Mikey Dukes already getting praise from Tony

I am pretty sure Mikey is going to surprise many at Clemson sooner than later. There wasn't a lot of fanfare with his recruiting and commitment mainly due to him being a 2* or low 3* from a private school. But he is one heck of an athlete. Not many dudes 5'11" that play RB can also win the Lowcountry Slam Dunk Contest.
But the biggest word of praise I heard was from a friend that is a Berkeley HS Football Coach. Before Mikey committed to Clemson, my coach buddy told me that we better hope he comes to Clemson. He was singing praises about Andre Ellington before he committed to Clemson and he told me Mikey was every bit as good as AE and maybe even better. He told me that Mikey had unbelievable work ethics, very determined, very athletic and a great young man. Obviously my response was he sounded like a Clemson man already!
CTE already says he has the best hands of any back he has had at Clemson! That is huge praise after only having like 7 practices as he wasn't an early enrollee! I love the underdogs, come-on Mikey!

I certainly don't claim to be a judge of talent but following my visit to practice last Wednesday, in my remarks in a subsequent post, I remarked we would be amazed at this young man. We were watching the RBs running through a gauntlet and I asked a fellow nearby if he knew who No. 19 was. He told me it was Dukes. If Dukes had been playing for a higher division school, he would, no doubt, have attracted more interest. I believe we got a "steal" in Dukes.

He attended First Baptist because his parents wanted to make sure that his education was first rate .
He's from North Charleston and played youth league ball with Dakereon Joyner . Everything I have read on him is positive , not just the athletic stuff .

Tug, my coach buddy also is the one that told me that Joyner wanted to get Clemson offer, really wanted to be a Tiger. Dabo wouldn't offer as a QB, but would as a Slot WR or a DB. He liked Joyner but he didn't like him as QB either. I'm actually friends with Coach LaPrad at Fort Dorchester and kind of heard the same as what my buddy told me. Unfortunately Joyner wanted to be a QB. My buddy wasn't as impressed with Joyner as he is with Mikey! I feel like he is pretty in tune with our region, he coaches a lot of local summer camps too so he has a good pulse on local guys.

Nice ! Yea , Dk Joyner could probably have easily transitioned to either CB or WR ... he's a tremendously gifted athlete . He chose poorly in our eyes of course but that's his life .

I graduated FB in 2000. That was before they went to 8-man... I don't think we had 20 kids on our team! Most of us played both ways, and a few of us never came off the field! lol
I played RB, LB, CB, P, PR, and coverage team!

Thanks for the link. As someone who coached at a small, private Christian school, I can really appreciate that story. (Interesting coincidence - I graduated from Moultrie High School. Different state, but still....)

I predicted that he wold be a great RB for us after reading about him and seeing the first tapes of him. I compare him running through all of those private school teams like I did Zion running over and through those kids he played in basketball.

Clemson got a good player that was under-valued! Another example as well of choosing young men who are about more than just football.
When you do that - you get the type of character that is more likely to buy into the team mentality. Into the hard work it takes!
Between him, Chez and Lynn J that RB room is in good hands for the future. (feel like I am missing one of the young guys but it is not intentional).

It brightens my day. I love it that our coaches don't overlook talent and character just because a young man doesn't have four or five stars beside his name. Will be looking forward to seeing Mikey on the field.
